Greenlit: John Krasinski Follows ‘A Quiet Place’ With New Film That Will Need a New Cast + More News

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Life on Mars” Horror projects in 2017 shook up the genre, and that trend continues in 2018. Last season, Jordan Peele broke the mold with “Get Out” and earned a much-deserved Best Director Oscar nomination (and Original Screenplay win). This season, John Krasinski took a turn at the helm for “A Quiet Place,” which is currently tearing up the box office. Studios wasted no time in adding another project, with Krasinski as director, to the slate. Instead of diving back into horror, the actor will try his hand at sci-fi with “Life on Mars.” The fim is an an adaptation of Cecil Castellucci’s story that follows a female descendant of a Martian colony who, one day,

Mel Gibson’s ‘Boss Level’ Lands at Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios

Mel Gibson’s ‘Boss Level’ Lands at Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios
Byron Allen’s growing independent outfit Entertainment Studios picked up U.S. distribution rights for action-thiller “Boss Level.”

The film, starring Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo and Ken Jeong, cost $45 million and is slated for a 2019 wide theatrical release.

Boss Level” is a co-production by Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Di Bonaventura Pictures, Carnahan and Grillo’s War Party, and Scott Free. Written and directed by “The Grey” and “The A-Team” director Joe Carnahan, “Boss Level” has a “Groundhog Day,” “Edge of Tomorrow” vibe.

The film follows a retired U.S. Army Special Forces veteran (Grillo) trapped in a never-ending loop, resulting in his death every day. In order to stop his endless suffering, he must figure out who is responsible and stop them.

“‘Boss Level’ is a powerful, action-packed, and highly-anticipated theatrical release,” Allen, head of Entertainment Studios said in a statement. “‘Boss Level’ combines non-stop action with an all-star cast, including Frank Grillo, Ken Jeong, Academy Award-winner Mel Gibson, and Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts. We are thrilled to have director Joe Carnahan at the helm to deliver what we believe will be a blockbuster.”

Allen’s Entertainment Studios has made some noise in Hollywood, picking up theatrical rights to films other studios would otherwise relegate straight to DVD.

The studio bought what would go on to be 2017’s highest-grossing independent movie, “47 Meters Down,” from the Weinstein Co. The film, starring Mandy Moore has grossed over $44 million to date. Most recently Entertainment Studios released the Kennedy mystery-thriller “Chappaquiddick.”

Upcoming releases include the Keanu Reeves sci-fi thriller “Replicas” and an animated feature called “Animal Crackers,” starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.

“Byron and I have been friends for over a decade, and my business partner, George Furla, has known Byron for over 30 years since their USC Film School days. We both believe Byron’s passion and taste are second to none,” producer Randall Emmett said in a statement. “The plan for Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures to give ‘Boss Level’ a wide theatrical release gives our film and writer/director Joe Carnahan’s vision exactly what we had hoped for when we put this project together.”

The deal was negotiated by Entertainment Studios’ Head of Acquisitions, Chris Charalambous, and Wayne Marc Godfrey of The Fyzz Facility on behalf of Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films.

Did 'A Quiet Place' Take Enough Risks?

Did 'A Quiet Place' Take Enough Risks?
[This story contains spoilers for A Quiet Place]

The following is a conversation about A Quiet Place, the financially and critically successful horror film about a near-future dystopia where a nuclear family (father, daughter, son and pregnant mother) must remain as silent as possible — or else be found and murdered by giant blind monsters. The film's success was unexpected given a number of factors, including the unlikely pairing of star/co-writer/director John Krasinski (The Office, Away We Go) and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production studio (Friday the 13th, The Purge). But one of the surest reasons for the film's success is its central...

Box-Office Weekend: Rampage Rages Against the Box Office

Dwayne Johnson returned to theaters with Rampage and snagged the top spot over the box-office weekend with a $34.5 million opening. That just beat last week’s champ, A Quiet Place, by roughly $2 million as it brought in an estimated $32.6 million. This gives director John Krasinski’s horror film an impressive two-week total of $99.6 million.

Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare finished in third place with $19.1 million for its opening weekend. Though considerably less than the two films ahead of it, it does prove that audiences still enjoy a good scare now and then. Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One fell from second place to fourth with $11.2 million, bringing its three-week domestic total to $114.6 million. The comedy Blockers dropped two spots this week, from third to fifth, earning $10.3 million (raising its two-week total to $36.9 million).

While Marvel’s Black Panther may have also fallen a few spots this weekend (from fourth to

‘A Quiet Place’: John Krasinski Reveals the Tricks Behind the Lantern Scene, Which Really Did Start a Fire — Watch

‘A Quiet Place’: John Krasinski Reveals the Tricks Behind the Lantern Scene, Which Really Did Start a Fire — Watch
What little noise there is in “A Quiet Place” is all the more effective for its scarcity. One of the film’s tensest scenes comes early on, when the family of four led by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt’s characters are playing Monopoly and a lantern gets knocked over. Now Krasinski, who also directed the near-silent thriller, has broken down said scene for the delight of everyone watching at home. Watch below.

“Because it’s a movie about a family that needs to remain quiet, this is such a perfect atmosphere and one of the best scenes to tell the rules of how to remain quiet, what happens if you don’t,” Krasinski says in the video.

“We knew that sound would not only be a main character, but the character. It’s actually the thing that frames the entire movie together, but more than that, it became about adhering to rules — what sounds,

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rampage’ Beats Out Horror Competition at Weekend Box Office

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rampage’ Beats Out Horror Competition at Weekend Box Office
The box office continues to decline. And Dwayne Johnson is a major star. He took thriller “Rampage” (Warner Bros.) to a narrow win over John Krasinski’s sleeper hit “A Quiet Place” (Paramount) as both films grossed over $30 million. That’s the second time two films have reached that level for a weekend in 2018 — compared to four by this time last year.

The numbers dropped about 15 per cent against a 2017 weekend when “The Fate of the Furious” opened to $98 million, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the tickets sold. Still, several titles are making strong showings, and exhibitors are looking forward to some blockbusters ahead to overcome the two percent box office dip to date, including Disney/Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity Wars” which is anticipated to open at $150 million or more.

Dwayne Johnson toplines $120-million “Rampage,” a video game adaptation about a primatologist joined by a mutant gorilla to confront a civilization-threatening invasion.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Rampage’ Squeaks Past ‘A Quiet Place’ with $34.5M

In a surprising twist, Rampage won out at the box office this weekend after all. While a Dwayne Johnson blockbuster taking #1 at the box office opening weekend may not seem like that big of a surprise, many analysts had the Warner Bros. film Rampage falling short of expectations and potentially losing out on the top spot to John Krasinski’s smash horror hit A Quiet Place. But despite lackluster critical reception (although our own Dave Trumbore quite enjoyed it), Rampage enjoyed a robust Saturday and is on pace for an estimated $34.5 million opening weekend, just barely scraping …

‘Rampage’ Stomps Past ‘A Quiet Place’ for $35 Million Box Office Win

‘Rampage’ Stomps Past ‘A Quiet Place’ for $35 Million Box Office Win
Great word of mouth has pushed New Line’s “Rampage” from a slow start to close to its pre-weekend projection goal, as the Dwayne Johnson-led smash-up is set to debut with $35.7 million from 4,101 screens. That will be enough to push the film past Paramount’s hit horror film “A Quiet Place” for the top spot on this weekend’s charts.

Critics were mixed about the “Rampage,” giving it a 51 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. But audiences who went to see the film on Friday night quite enjoyed it, giving it an A- on CinemaScore. TheWrap’s Umberto Gonzalez and Beatrice Verhoeven described “Rampage” as good, popcorn-munching entertainment, and audiences seem to have agreed with families packing Saturday matinees.

But with a $120 million budget, the profitability of “Rampage” is still up in the air, as box office analysts who spoke with TheWrap agree that the film likely has just two weekends to make its money before Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” gobbles up screens and consumers.

Overseas, “Rampage” has made $114.1 million in multiple territories, giving it a $148.6 million worldwide start. China is the top global market for the film with a $55 million launch, while IMAX screens accounted for $10 million worldwide.

While “A Quiet Place” won’t repeat as No. 1, Paramount still has a lot to celebrate with director-star John Krasinski’s hit film. This weekend’s nearly $33 million gorss pushes its 10-day total of $100 million against a $17 million budget. The strong word of mouth that pushed the film to a $50 million opening has helped hold its second weekend drop-off to just 34 percent.

In third is Universal/Blumhouse’s “Truth Or Dare,” which made $19 million in its opening weekend from 3,029 locations. The film has been received poorly with a B- CinemaScore grade and a 15 percent Rt score.

But while “A Quiet Place” remains the horror film of choice at the box office, Blumhouse’s microbudget strategy has paid off again as the film only has a $3.5 million production budget and has also beaten pre-weekend projections of a $12-15 million start.

Holdovers complete the top five, with Warner Bros.’ “Ready Player One” in fourth with $11 million in its third weekend. Steven Spielberg’s film grossed $33 million overseas this weekend, which should push it cross the $500 million mark this coming week; the current global estimated cume is $474 million.

Universal’s comedy “Blockers” is just behind with $10.2 million, giving the $20 million comedy film a 10-day total of $37 million.

Outside the top five, “Black Panther” finally fell out of the top ranks with a sixth-place total of $5.3 million in its ninth weekend. Two weekends before “Avengers” hits theaters, the film now has a domestic total of $673.8 million and a global total of $1.31 billion.

In seventh is Fox Searchlight’s “Isle of Dogs,” which made $5 million from 1,939 screens in its first weekend in wide release, giving it a total of $18.4 million.

‘A Quiet Place’ to Lead Box Office, ‘Rampage’ Debuts at $32 Million

‘A Quiet Place’ to Lead Box Office, ‘Rampage’ Debuts at $32 Million
Thanks to strong word of mouth, John Krasinski’s horror film “A Quiet Place” is looking to top the box office for the second weekend in a row with $34 million from 3,589 domestic locations.

Just behind the SXSW success story is Warner Bros.-New Line’s “Rampage” with $32 million from 4,101 sites. Friday’s estimates had adjusted the Dwayne Johnson-starrer’s debut to the $27-$32 million range, with earlier tracking forecasting an opening between $35 and $40 million. “Rampage” earned $11.5 million its opening Friday, including $2.4 million from Thursday previews.

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Rampage’ Could Fall to ‘A Quiet Place’ in Tight Box Office Race

Word of mouth for Paramount’s “A Quiet Place” is pushing it towards a great second weekend, as it now has a chance of staving off Warner Bros./New Line’s “Rampage” to keep the top spot at the box office.

John Krasinski’s critically acclaimed film made $10.5 million in its second Friday and is now looking at a second weekend total of $34 million. That’s just a 32 percent drop from the film’s $50 million opening weekend and puts it on track for a 10-day domestic total above $100 million.

Rampage” made $11.5 million on its opening Friday from 4,101 screens, including $2.4 million from Thursday previews. Estimates now have Dwayne Johnson’s CGI-filled monster film making $32 million this weekend against a $120 million budget, below pre-weekend projections for a $35-40 million opening.

The good news is that while critics have been mixed with a 51 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, audiences enjoyed the film and gave it an A- on CinemaScore. That could lead to good word of mouth that can bump up the Saturday numbers and push the film past “A Quiet Place,” though even with that it’s still uncertain whether “Rampage” can stay out of the red.

In third is Universal/Blumhouse’s “Truth or Dare,” which is beating projections with $8.2 million from 3,029 locations on Friday, giving it an estimated $19 million opening. Blumhouse’s traditionally thrifty approach to filmmaking makes this movie’s mark to reach profitability low, with a production budget of just $3.5 million. But critics panned the film with a 16 percent Rt score, and audiences didn’t like it much more with a B- on CinemaScore.

“Ready Player One” sits in fourth with $2.9 million made on its third Friday and an estimated $11.1 million weekend, while “Blockers” completes the top five with an estimated $10 million second weekend, roughly 51 percent down from its $20.5 million launch.

Meanwhile, “Black Panther” will finally fall out of the top five in its ninth weekend with $5.3 million, just two weekends before Marvel Studios reestablishes its grip on the box office with “Avengers: Infinity War.” Just below the superhero movie in seventh is Fox Searchlight’s “Isle of Dogs,” which made $1.5 million in its first day of nationwide release. The Wes Anderson stop-motion animated film is expected to make $4.7 million from 1,939 screens this weekend.

How ‘A Quiet Place’ Roared at the Domestic Box Office

How ‘A Quiet Place’ Roared at the Domestic Box Office
Last weekend “A Quiet Place” (Paramount) accomplished a rare box office feat: it exceeded all projections. And its strong word of mouth could catapult John Krasinski’s $20-million horror sleeper to a mighty domestic total of $125 million or higher.

So far an otherwise lackluster 2018 has been dominated by Disney/Marvel’s “Black Panther,” the biggest film ever released in a year’s first quarter. By this point in 2017 five new releases had grossed over $150 million, compared to only “Panther” so far in 2018. Right now only “Ready Player One” looks to reach that level.

Something significant is going on. A new trend could cause a major shift in studio production– and give North American theaters a needed boost.

Despite the laser focus on the franchise and sequel films that dominate production slates, in the past few decades many lower-budget films (under $40 million) have managed to gross over $100 million domestic.

But things

New Mutants Star Calls It a Scary, Full-Fledged Horror Movie

New Mutants Star Calls It a Scary, Full-Fledged Horror Movie
The New Mutants is currently undergoing reshoots and Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is declaring that it will be a "full-fledged" horror movie set in the X-Men universe. However, New Mutants didn't originally start that way, even if the first trailer led viewers to believe that it was. The new intense reshoots have pushed the film back almost a year and a half to completely reshape it into a horror movie, according to sources, and it seems that this will be the scariest thing to ever come out of the X-Men universe.

In a new interview, Charlie Heaton, who portrays Cannonball, confirmed that New Mutants is going to be something pretty unique. The actor obviously can't say much about the highly anticipated movie, but what he does say is very intriguing to say the least. Heaton goes on to say that New Mutants will be the "scariest thing we've seen

‘Rampage’ to Debut Behind ‘A Quiet Place’ in Muted Opening Weekend

‘Rampage’ to Debut Behind ‘A Quiet Place’ in Muted Opening Weekend
Dwayne Johnson’s action-fantasy “Rampage” is heading for downbeat North American opening weekend of about $27 million to $32 million at 3,950 locations, early estimates showed Friday.

That’s well below forecasts and signals that Paramount’s second weekend of John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” should repeat as the box office winner with about $34 million at 3,508 sites. Universal-Blumhouse’s debut of “Truth or Dare” will come in above expectations in third with about $18 million at 3,029 venues.

With a price tag in the $120 million range, “Rampage” needs to deliver strong box office around the world to become profitable. The New Line-Warner Bros. release had been forecasted to debut between $37 million and $40 million from 3,950 theaters this weekend.

Johnson portrays a primatologist who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla who becomes a giant beast after a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong and creates an array of rampaging creatures. First-day grosses in China were impressive with $15.7 million,
