Dwayne Johnson Has No Regrets About "Candy Asses" Rant Regarding Fast 8 Co-Stars

19 November 2016 1:55 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Dwayne Johnson stands by the harsh words he said about some of the actors he worked with on Fast 8. The 44-year-old, the highest-paid actor with more than $64.5 million in annual earnings, had spurred controversy in August when he said some of his "male co-workers" on Fast 8 do not "conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals" and "are too chicken s--t to do anything about it anyway," adding, "Candy asses." Johnson, who stars in the 2017 movie with the likes of Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and Scott Eastwood, did not name names in his rant. Newswire: In case anyone’s curious, Eddie Redmayne doesn’t want to be James Bond

17 November 2016 6:33 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Even before Daniel Craig declared in 2015 that he’d rather slit his wrists with broken glass than play James Bond again, the internet has been trying to come up with other actors who could step into Bond’s fancy suits and gadgets once Craig moves on. Idris Elba has been the favorite for a long time, but Jason Statham, Gillian Anderson, Tom Hiddleston, Emilia Clarke, and Hugh Jackman have all expressed interest at some point. Earlier this month, though, Michael Fassbender humbly declared that he does not want to play James Bond, sending a shock through the entire James Bond rumor industry.

Now, Eddie Redmayne has also taken himself out of the running, even though nobody in the world ever thought that Eddie Redmayne should play James Bond in the first place (the same goes for Hugh Jackman, by the way). That comes from an interview Redmayne did with ...

Film Review: ‘Officer Downe’

17 November 2016 5:29 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Imagine Paul Verhoeven’s “RoboCop” stripped of its politics, its wit, its humanity, and its craft, and that only gets halfway down the bottom of the barrel scraped by “Officer Downe,” a hyper-aggressive and thoroughly repugnant piece of comic-book juvenalia. Based on Joe Casey and Chris Burnham’s comic, and scripted by Casey, this ultra-violent tour of L.A.’s criminal underground reps the feature directorial debut of M. Shawn Crahan, co-founder of the popular heavy metal outfit Slipknot. Fans of the ’Knot’s horror-clown aesthetic may have no trouble withstanding this bruising assault on the senses, but Crahan’s frenetic mélange of law-and-order fantasy, Big Boss battles, and tough-guy posturing will be a challenge to anyone else. Magnet’s day-and-date release rightly assumes better prospects on VOD than in theaters, leaving Crahan’s nu-metal niche to thrash up the cash.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Review

16 November 2016 1:19 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

J.K. Rowling is so much more than just a literary talent. Brilliant writer? Check. Inspirational dreamer? Double check. Certifiable marketing genius? She might as well be called Mrs. Draper after her latest adventure into the Harry Potter extended universe.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them faced a certain conundrum – how do you keep Potterheads excited without Daniel Radcliffe, Hogwarts or even Hedwig for that matter? Simple. Take advantage of a cultural phenomenon like Pokémon Go, and spin it with a wizarding twist. I mean, that’s what’s going on here (with a little lot of Men In Black nostalgia). Some boy runs all over New York City capturing “fantastic beasts” while stuffing them inside an ever-expansive magic containment device (the briefcase substitutes as a Pokeball). Like the Potterverse needed any more pop-culture appeal, right? It’s not like director David Yates wasn’t familiar with Rowling’s world already… »

Contest: Treat your eyes to a 4K Blu-ray player and a 4K copy of Mechanic: Resurrection

16 November 2016 10:00 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

High-definition content has had a good run, but soon it will be replaced by 4K ultra-hd stuff that will, presumably, make that normal HD stuff look like crap. For anyone who has yet to treat their eyes to a 4K video upgrade, The A.V. Club is giving away a 4K Blu-ray player (a Samsung Ubd-K8500, to be exact) and a 4K copy of Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection for you to watch on it. The movie is already about Statham doing cool assassin stuff in fabulous locations, so just imagine how much more fabulous it’ll all look when the definition is higher than any of the other definitions you’ve previously experienced.

For your chance to win, simply send an email to avcontests@theonion.com with the subject line ”4K Blu-ray” before Tuesday, November 22. We’ll pick a winner on Wednesday, November 23, notify them that day ...

Online Essentials: Logan Paul Is Like Johnny Knoxville, But Sweeter — Watch

8 November 2016 6:00 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Online Essentials is a weekly column where we introduce you to an influential digital content creator in their own words.

Vine may be shutting down, but one of its biggest stars is just getting started. The All-American babyfaced bro Logan Paul made a name for himself on the soon-to-be defunct platform with physical comedy routines condensed into three beats for six-second videos that tell their own mini-stories. Following in the longstanding tradition of Buster Keaton, his pratfalls and dumb jock persona have much more in common with Jim Carrey and the “Jackass” guys.

More impressive than harnessing the power of Vine to showcase his specific talents, Paul has left the platform in the dust as he launches a burgeoning acting career. Earlier this month, he appeared alongside former Disney Channel »

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and other stars’ strange paths to fame

27 October 2016 11:30 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of Central Intelligence starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, we take a look at a cluster of actors who didn’t take the normal path to stardom.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

Hart’s co-star in Central Intelligence and all round big screen titan, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson started out his career as a WWE wrestler, having played American Football to national championship level. From 1996 – 2004 Johnson was a major figure on the WWE circuit. A study in the art of multi-tasking, Johnson enjoyed an overlap between his wrestling and film career, making his feature film debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns as The Scorpion King; a role he reprised in 2002’s film of the same name. Roles in comedies Be Cool, Get Smart and Race To Witch Mountain followed, before Johnson got his big breakthrough with 2011’s Fast & Furious 5. Since then Johnson has been unstoppable, »

Uwe Boll Announces His Retirement From Filmmaking

26 October 2016 7:45 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The career of Uwe Boll has been marked by one distinguishing factor: nearly all of his movies are terrible. The director himself would never say so, and has often proclaimed his works to be better than what his colleagues in Hollywood have been doing, but his greatest accomplishment might’ve been using German tax laws to keep his string of modestly budgeted movies financially viable. At his peak, Boll found himself working with Jason Statham on “In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale” and helming the video game adaptation “Alone In The Dark,” but for the most part, his movies got limited stateside release, and were viewed as cult curios at best.

China Box Office: ‘Mechanic’ Muscular as ‘Jack Reacher’ Flops

23 October 2016 4:18 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Jason Statham-starring action film “Mechanic: Resurrection” comfortably opened in top position at the Chinese box office. Its score was three times greater than Tom Cruise-starring “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.”

Mechanic 2” took $24.3 million in three days, ahead of Hong Kong-made Nicholas Tse-starring crime drama “Heartfall Arises,” which opened a day earlier on Thursday. According to data from Ent Group, “Heartfall” scored $12.0 million in four days, and $8.86 million over the Friday to Sunday period.

The strength for “Mechanic” can be written down to the action star power of Statham, who has enjoyed past success in China with “Fast & Furious,” “The Expendables” and “The Transporter.”

“Operation Mekong” Bona Film Group’s actioner, which topped the charts for the past two weeks, added a further $8.26 million. That took its cumulative after 24 days to a handsome $159 million.

Jack Reacher 2” tagged along in fourth place on each day of release »

Pete Ploszek interview: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Matt Edwards Oct 27, 2016

We chat to the voice of Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, Mr Pete Ploszek...

If you can do an interview in person, it’s usually better to do so. It’s just easier to communicate with someone in the same room as you, from timing to noticing clues as to when they’re bored of your stupid questions. But interviewing Pete Ploszek over the phone comes with a benefit.

Pete Ploszek plays Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows. He physically plays him, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him because of the use of motion capture technology (a mixture of visual effects science and ancient magic rituals). I’ve met Mr Ploszek before and he looks like a nice, pleasant human being rather than a giant mutant reptile. But he’s also the voice of Leonardo and so, »

Donald Trump: The Films and TV Shows That Made Him a Pop Culture Icon

19 October 2016 11:14 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Many of us, during this election cycle, have found us switching from live TV to our Netflix queues in search of escapism. But because the two people currently running for president of the United States have been in the public eye for decades, there’s always a danger that you might be reminded, on-screen or through some clever joke, that November 8 is coming.

By the numbers, odds are pretty good that between the two candidates, the one you’ll see will be Donald Trump. According to IMDb, since 1981 Donald Trump has made over 230 film and television appearances — 219 as “Self” and 20 as an actor usually playing “Donald Trump,” though there may be some overlap between the two.

Simon Brew Oct 17, 2016

We've changed the website a bit. And this we have written to you to explain ourselves...

Dear the fine, fine, fine readers of Den Of Geek,

You humble us. We’ve been doing this site now for nearly a decade, and in that time, we’ve never met a finer bunch of readers than you wonderful people. Granted, we’re trying to put you in a good mood, but it’s true. So thank you.

Er, are you in a good mood? Let's continue, with our fingers crossed.

In all the time we've been going, too, we’ve only done a fundamental redesign to the site once, way back in 2012. And here we are again, four years later. We’re thus here to tell you about how we’ve ruined everything all over again.

For if all has gone to plan, you are now reading this on a redesigned Den Of Geek. »

The first image from the set of Jason Statham‘s next big actioner Meg has just been released. The film is based on the 1990s novel of the same name by Steve Alten and could just be the greatest film ever to go into production. Here’s the pic, also featuring co-star Li Bingbing on set followed by the book’s official synopsis.

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with terror. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor remains haunted years later by what he saw. Written off as a crackpot, he insists that the prehistoric shark known as Carcharodon megalodon still swims the deep underwater chasms.

Only an urgent call for help from one of his oldest friends can persuade him to return to those deadly waters. Now Taylor will relive his darkest nightmare, only to find that what »

Meg: first image, synopsis from Jason Statham Vs shark movie

Simon Brew Oct 17, 2016

Jason Statham. Li Bingbing. A giant shark. Where do we sign up?

If you’re looking for us on the morning of March 2nd 2018, then you’ll be able to find us in the first available showing of Meg, a movie that seems to have been conceived with us purely in mind.

It’s the one where Jason Statham is set to do battle with an enormous shark, and just typing these words brings us out in the kind of glee that should be illegal on a Monday morning.

The film is being directed by Jon Turteltaub (who helmed the National Treasure movies, amongst many others), and it co-stars Li Bingbing. It’s based on the novel by Steve Alten, that goes by the name of Meg: A Novel Of Deep Terror. We’re in.

Filming is now underway in New Zealand on the film, and »

Jason Statham rocks a turtleneck in first photo from Jon Turteltaub's Meg

I don't know about you, but the very first thing I do when I'm getting ready to hunt a 75-foot-long prehistoric Megalodon is toss on my most stylish turtleneck; perhaps I don't rock it quite as effectively as Jason Statham here, but it does make me feel like a shark hunting bad-ass. Prehistoric Shark Thriller Meg Starts Filming As Jason Statham And Li Bingbing Pose For First Snap

14 October 2016 7:32 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

If you’ve swung by any form of social media today, you’ll have likely clocked eyes on the nerve-shredding footage of a great white shark becoming entangled in a diver’s cage…while the diver was still helplessly locked in. Miraculously, he emerged unharmed soon after the shark wriggled out after breaking through the metal bars.

Experts were quick to stress that the animal was likely confused – and rightfully so – as sharks typically experience a moment of sudden blindness just as they bite down on a piece of meat or other animal. This, coupled with the fact that sharks are unable to swim backwards, means that in all likelihood, the great white wasn’t acting aggressively, despite what the tabloids would have you believe.

Incidentally, a shark making the headlines comes on the day that Meg, Jon Turtletaub’s maritime thriller centering on the prehistoric, 75-foot long beast known as the Megalodon, »
