The AACO is one of the oldest supranational ophthalmological societies representing most Afro Asian countries. It helps in promoting the advancement of all modern techniques towards excellence in scientific and clinical practice in all aspects of Ophthalmology. The Afro-Asian Council of Ophthalmology was established before 1958 and was based in Egypt.Many of the Afro-Asian countries are represented in the council including Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, India, China, and Ukraine. The main subjects of these congresses were concerned with combat of ocular infections, glaucoma and cataract and had promoted the recent advances in cataract, laser and vitreoretinal surgery.It is one of the oldest and well established Supranational Organizations concerned with the advances of ophthalmology in the Afro-Asian countries. The modern techniques include on cataract surgery and laser therapy on a wide scaleto combat the major causes of blindness, namely cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. The aim of the council is to study eye diseases in Africa and Asia and to share in finding the best ways of combating and eliminating these diseases.The Council encourages scientific meetings and congresses to enhance research and exchange of knowledge between the Afro-Asian countries and other countries worldwide.
