Johnny Depp’s Newest Film Tackles Infamous Hip-Hop Murders

Brad Furman (“The Infiltrator”) is stepping up to direct his next project, starring Johnny Depp, entitled “Labyrinth.” Before you can conjure up all the ways Depp’s Jareth the Goblin King will pale in comparison to the late, great David Bowie, note the film is not a remake of the 1986 cult fantasy film. This time around the story will follow another musical legend’s twisted death: hip-hop’s Notorious B.I.G. The film centers on a detective, played by Depp, who while investigating the murder of the legendary Brooklyn-based rapper, and related death of Tupac Shakur, is met with pushback from his own department as he uncovers gang ties and possible corruption within his own precinct. Lauren Grey is handling the casting on the project that currently has only Depp on the roster. Marvel’s Doctor Strange hits $325 million worldwide

6 November 2016 12:18 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With early estimates for this weekend’s box office takings coming in, it’s being reported that Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster Doctor Strange has enjoyed an $85 million opening at the North American box office, falling just short of Thor: The Dark World’s $85.7 million November debut back in 2013.

Internationally, Doctor Strange has added $118.7 million this weekend, of which $44.4 million from China, the largest opening weekend for the first instalment of any superhero franchise. Given its international takings from last weekend, the Phase Three origin story is now sitting on $325.4 million worldwide, meaning it’s already overtaken Marvel’s lowest grossing release The Incredible Hulk ($263.4 million) and has Captain America: The First Avenger ($370.6 million) in its sights for this week.

Mads Mikkelsen reveals how Doctor Strange’s mind-bending action sequences were shot

6 November 2016 5:35 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

“What was in that tea?”

When Flickering Myth sat down with Mads Mikkelsen to talk about Doctor Strange, it was only the day after we had seen the film. And if our minds were still melted by the movie’s action sequences – which can best be described as soaking a Rubik’s Cube in ketamine – how in the Dark Lord’s name did the actors maintain their sense of place on a mostly green-screen backdrop? In other words, how do you know which skyscraper you’re running up the top of?

“[Scott] already had those thoughts,” Mikkelsen explained. “‘How am I going to explain this to people? If I’m going to stand here and gesture, it’s not going to work.’ So, smart enough, they made a little animated version of all the scenes so we could sneak peek and say, ‘oh, Ok – upside down, there he is, that’s the corridor, »

Marvel’s Doctor Strange heading for an $80 million+ domestic opening weekend

5 November 2016 3:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Having grossed an $86 million international opening last week, it seems that Marvel’s Doctor Strange is on track to post a similar figure with is North American debut this weekend, with the Benedict Cumberbatch-headlined Phase Three blockbuster on course for an $82 million to $88 million domestic haul.

Doctor Strange earned $9.4 million on Thursday, putting it ahead of Ant-Man ($6.4 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($7.1 million), and close to Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2 million). It’s Friday gross was $33 million, and analysts are predicting that it could go on to top Thor: The Dark World’s $85.7 million opening weekend. Box office tracking had suggested a domestic debut of around $65 million.

Doctor Strange tracking $65+ million domestic opening

3 November 2016 7:41 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After scoring a fantastic international opening, it looks like Doctor Strange could score a pretty sizable domestic number when it opens this weekend.

The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Doctor Strange is currently tracking $65-$70 million, but could do better. This means it will open ahead of Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk and Thor in terms of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but will be in the bottom tier of comic book films in 2016. It will be way below Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, but slightly ahead of X-Men: Apocalypse.

Doctor Strange will open against Dreamwork’s animated film Trolls, which is tracking a $35 million opening weekend.

So it looks like Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween will be dethroned after beating Jack Reacher: Never Look Back and Inferno.

Spoiler: Benedict Cumberbatch played another major character in Doctor Strange

Warning: Spoilers for Doctor Strange, obviously.

Doctor Strange is out in cinemas now [read our review here] and the cast and crew have been busy talking to the press about the film. We got to speak with director Scott Derrickson, who revealed that Taika Waitti directed the mid-credits sting featuring Thor, but he’s also spoken to IGN to reveal that star Benedict Cumberbatch pulled double duty on the film.

Turns out that, while he didn’t provide the voice, Cumberbatch did the facial capture for the film’s villain Dormammu. “We knew it was an all-cg character, but as we were in production Benedict brought it up as an idea,” Derrickson said. “He said, ‘What would you think about me doing it?’ I said, ‘Let me think about it, you know.’ It’s an interesting idea, because I did fancy the idea that as this other-dimensional being he’s not moving through the Dark Dimension, »

Director Scott Derrickson teases Doctor Strange 2, who will the villain be?

Warning: Major spoilers for Doctor Strange and its end-credits sequence.

This is Benedict Cumberbatch trying to protect you against spoilers. He’s failing.

During Flickering Myth’s chat with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, he spoke about the movie’s two end credits sequences. The mid-credits you can read all about here (and Derrickson revealing who directed it), and the end-credits here.

The end-credits shows Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) attacking a former sorcerer and stealing his magical abilities.

“We wrote the scene for [Baron] Mordo – the second tag – afterwards,” Derrickson recalled, after revealing when the mid-credits sequence was shot. “Because we had always felt that it would be great to have one more beat to Mordo’s arc, and to put it at the very, very end I think was really the best way to do it.”

We pointed out that the scene sets up a Doctor Strange sequel, with Mordo as the film’s villain. »
