'Moana' Scores $81.1M Holiday Opening; 'Allied' & 'Bad Santa 2' Struggle While Beatty's 'Rules' Flops

4 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Disney's Moana topped the extended holiday box office with the second largest five-day Thanksgiving opening of all-time and the third largest three-day Thanksgiving opening of all-time, leading a top twelve that grossed a combined $173 million. Moana was, however, the only real success story among new wide releases as Allied and Bad Santa 2 fell short of expectations and Rules Don't Apply delivered the worst wide opening of 2016. Other bright spots are to be found, though, in the likes of holdovers such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Doctor Strange and Arrival as well as a solid expansion for Amazon and Roadside's Manchester by the Sea. At the top, Disney's latest animated adventure Moana delivered an estimated $55.5 million three-day opening and an estimated $81.1 million five-day opening. As already noted, the five-day opening ranks as the second largest Thanksgiving debut ever behind Disney's Frozen ($93.6m five-day) and just ahead of »

‘Moana’ Is Just the Latest Feminist, Progressive Disney Hit

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The box office success of “Moana” confirms Disney’s status atop the pecking order of major studios.

It owes its apex predator status to the way it has deftly bolstered and built on the power of its suite of cinematic brands, as well as its ability to create stories featuring diverse protagonists that reflect the changing face of the moviegoing public.

“Moana” is the latest Disney film to be based on a strong female protagonist. Though the studio has long featured women in lead roles dating as far back as 1937’s “Snow White,” and has minted money from its “Princess Collection” of consumer products, its female characters have adopted a more assertive and empowered stance over the past few decades. Whereas earlier Disney heroines waited around for their prince to come and save the day, Moana takes it upon herself to embark on a perilous oceanic voyage in order to »

‘Moana’ Sails in With $81 Million at Thanksgiving Box Office

Disney has another hit on their hands with the animated “Moana” featuring the voice of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The Thanksgiving holiday moneymaker earned an estimated $81.1 million over the five-day holiday, shy of the record set by Disney’s “Frozen” when it earned $93.6 million in the same time frame in 2013. If that estimate holds, “Moana” will barely beat 1999’s “Toy Story 2” for the No. 2 spot. Earlier in its opening frame, “Moana” appeared to have a chance at defrosting the “Frozen” record when it earned $15.7 million on Wednesday alone (more than the $15.2 million opening day for Disney’s 2013 animated »

‘Moana’ Tops Thanksgiving Box Office, ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ Bombs, ‘Allied’ and ‘Bad Santa 2’ Stumble

6 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s “Moana” sailed to the top of the Thanksgiving box office, earning a mighty $81.1 million over the five-day holiday period and $55.5 million for the weekend.

Its success builds on the studio’s hot streak. Disney has released five of the year’s ten highest grossing films, is the leader in terms of market share, and is poised to set a new record for annual grosses. Its hits include “Captain America: Civil War,”  “Zootopia,” “Doctor Strange,” “Finding Dory,” “The Jungle Book,” and now “Moana,” with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” waiting in the wings.

Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said that the success of “Moana” and others like it justified the company’s decision to make fewer films, while taking bigger bets. Part of that strategy involved shelling out billions of dollars to buy Pixar, Marvel, and LucasFilm, the brands behind “Toy Story,” “The Avengers,” and “Star Wars.”

Among several new films dealing with the drama of expat Indian workers in the Emirates (another is the Malayam Pathemari), The Unnamed (Oggatonama) chooses the risky approach of tragicomedy to bring home the toll on loved ones left behind. But on balance, it’s an entertaining and engrossing watch with a moving payload at the end.
