Sylvester Stallone Will Return To Star In That ‘Escape Plan’ Sequel You’ve Been Waiting For

14 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Three years ago, “Escape Plan” hit theaters. It starred Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger and it was dumb and got terrible reviews and tanked at the box office and everyone moved on with their lives. Well, everyone in North America at any rate. Overseas, the low rent action movie earned a staggering $112 million, hugely outpacing the tepid domestic haul of $25 million. And for the folks at Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, that’s enough reason to greenlight a sequel.

In it, a girl wearing a red hoodie hitchhikes her way into a ride and goes on to confirm all your worst fears about people on the side of the road with their thumbs up; this leads to one of the bloodiest sequences you’re ever likely to see in a music video, especially for such a low-key song. From there, she takes the car for herself — and picks up an unsuspecting hitchhiker of her own. »

While not technically a sequel, “Soldado” will have many of the same characters and exist in the same world, but will be a standalone film in the series.

‘Hunter Gatherer’ Trailer: Andre Royo is Making a Very Unexpected Living in SXSW Winner — Watch

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Ashley Douglas is just making a living. Recently released from prison after three years, the one-time ex-con, played by “The Wire” favorite Andre Royo, is back on the streets and hopeful that his life is finally going to fall back into place. Despite his very best intentions — and a scrappy can-do attitude — that’s not exactly what happens in Josh Locy’s feature directorial debut.

Royo, who picked up a Special Jury Award for his performance at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, where the film made its bow, goes all out as the luckless Ashley, who emerges back into the “real world” to find that very little has waited for him, including his beloved girlfriend Linda. As Ashley sets out to make his way in a time and place he no longer recognizes, he takes up with a compelling loner named Jeremy (George Sample III), and the duo pull »

The National Center On Sexual Exploitation Calls Out ‘Westworld’ For Graphic Orgy Scene

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

**Spoilers ahead** A lot happened on last night’s episode of “Westworld“: The Man In Black and Dr. Ford crossed paths; Dolores showed herself to be far more than just a damsel in distress; Maeve began to unravel more about what she is; and oh yeah, there was a giant orgy sequence. For a network that is routinely criticized for how much skin they show, HBO didn’t flinch in a scene that showed the visitors of Westworld indulging their sexual desires with wild abandon, but the sequence has ran afoul of The Nation Centre Of Sexual Exploitation.

“Student Filmmaking at its Finest”: Don Coscarelli on Phantasm

1 hour ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

The first filmmaker I ever interviewed was Don Coscarelli. It was 1998 and I was a junior in college, toiling away at the University of Kentucky student newspaper. Coscarelli agreed to chat about his career for the paper’s Halloween movie page and, clueless as to proper interview decorum — or what might be an appropriate amount of time to monopolize — I asked him about every movie he had ever made. Every. Single. Movie. It was a Frost-Nixon length tête-à-tête, but he was nice enough to humor me. Two decades later — and on the eve of another Halloween — I had […] »

Daisy Ridley Responds To Criticism That Rey Is A Mary Sue, Says It’s “Irrational And It Doesn’t Make Sense”

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

“I’m never online to start a fight,” Max Landis recently told The New York Times, though he does concede that he behaves like an unhinged fanboy on social media, acting “in the same way that I used to in the back of the comic book store — very quickly without thinking about it.” And it’s that penchant of operating without a filter that led him into controversial waters last year, when he declared that Rey was a Mary Sue in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” That phrase, which describes a female character who is idealized and only succeeds because of the will of the author, and the criticism by Landis, sparked plenty of outrage.

Bring on the Holodeck! Here’s the Top 7 Vr Insights from the Ves Summit

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

October 29 was the eighth annual Ves Summit (at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills), where Visual Effects Society members discuss the tech and business elements of their craft — but this year, the obsession was virtual. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality dominated the discussions, including two panels: “Cinematography and VFX: What Constitutes ‘Real’?” and “Visual Effects in the Wild.” However, at Ves, the untamed landscape was the one between our ears. Here’s our top takeaways.

Expect your amusement park attractions to become increasingly virtual. Sam Richards, visual effects design manager at Walt Disney Imagineering, said they’re trying to figure out how to put Vr into an attraction, given the cost of headgear, and are currently experimenting with pre-show usage.

While much of the industry views the film festival circuit as starting with Sundance, genre fans see it differently. Next year, you can add the Overlook Film Festival to that list.

The new horror festival, which begins April 27, will take place Oregon’s Timerline Lodge — the eerie building that provided the exteriors for the haunted Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” Guests of the festival will stay in and around the hotel for four days while taking in programming featuring numerous highlights of contemporary horror in addition to classic titles. Programming will include “an immersive game” from the experiential gaming company Bottleneck Immersive and a live performance of the serialized radio play “Tales From Beyond the Pale,” produced by indie horror maestro Larry Fessenden. ‘The Secret History of Twin Peaks’ Audiobook: Listen to an Excerpt Delving Into Josie Packard’s Shadowy Past

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If we know anything about next year’s “Twin Peaks” revival, it’s that we don’t really know anything about next year’s “Twin Peaks” revival. There are exceptions, of course: David Lynch will be directing every episode, and most of the main cast is returning along with a surprising slate of newcomers (Michael Cera? Eddie Vedder?). But in terms of the show’s narrative direction, Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost have been expectedly tight-lipped. Frost did recently release his book “The Secret History of Twin Peaks,” however, and you can now listen to a 16-minute excerpt from the audiobook version.

Happy Halloween: The Scariest, Most Unnerving TV Shows That Aren’t Part of the Horror Genre

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Sometimes the scariest part of a TV show is what you don’t see.

An adage applicable for horror and non-horror series alike, the above certainly plays to our topic of the day: Halloween. While many will be celebrating by dressing up and going out, those that dress down to stay in have plenty of options in front of them for safe, cinematic frights. But what about the less popular Halloween picks? You know, the shows that really get under your skin without making you watch as they literally peel it back. The series that defy a ratings system because maybe there’s no gruesome violence, but parents still feel iffy about letting their kids watch it.
