‘Miss Sloane’ Review: Jessica Chastain Is Bulletproof In a Frothy Political Soap Opera About the Other Women In Washington

Well “Miss Sloane” certainly picked an interesting weekend to make its world premiere. A barnstorming political thriller about a fiercely intelligent woman who breaks men over her knee and brings Washington D.C. to heel, the latest film from “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden may have been conceived as a story of empowerment, but in the wake of President-Elect Donald J. Trump. it can’t help but feel like a feminist fantasy from a more hopeful time when the glass ceiling seemed ready to shatter into 160 million tiny pieces — a time that I like to call “last Monday.”

But maybe that will change. Maybe tomorrow — after the smoke clears and our anger coalesces into action — this fierce, over the top, and wholly entertaining saga of lobbyists run amok won’t be seen as a nostalgic throwback so much as a cautionary tale about what’s to come.

How Quiver Helps Indies Find Their Way To iTunes, Amazon and Netflix

Independent and documentary films are increasingly being consumed on subscription streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, or being purchased through Video on Demand (VOD) services like iTunes.  This has opened the door for an increasing number of festival filmmakers choosing the path of self distribution. The problem is there are two significant barriers that have developed to filmmakers getting on these platforms.

One barrier is that as these retailers continue to grow, individual filmmakers are not able to make a direct deals with these companies.

“The cost benefit for say a company like iTunes of doing a direct deal has diminished dramatically,” said Erik Anderson, Founder of Quiver.  “It takes time, it takes legal and administrative resources, just getting on the phone and having conversations is time consuming.”

According to Anderson, even for smaller distributors with a handful of titles it’s not worth it for a giant like iTunes »

Shia Labeouf Freestyle Rapping Skills Are the Perfect Antidote to Election Woes – Watch

In case you didn’t know Shia Labeouf can rap. No, it’s true. The “American Honey” actor surprised people at SiriusXM Shade 45’s “Sway in the Morning” when he freestyle rapped during the show’s “Five Fingers of Death” segment.

The challenge determines an individual’s freestyling abilities over five different beats and surprisingly, Labeouf impressed everyone with his performance.

In the video below, the actor is heard rapping about his Missy Elliott tattoos and Dr. Dre. He also calls himself the Einstein of rhyming and the “Jewish Pac to this music with a twist of Whitman.” At the end of his rap, host Sway Calloway gets pumped up and yells, “Did you see that? This is what we’ve been talking about.”

IndieWire’s Movie Podcast: Screen Talk (Episode 123) – Why the Film Community Will Survive Trump

For much of the creative community, the outcome of the 2016 presidential election was a traumatic experience that continues to resonate. The very notion of a Trump Presidency suggests ideas that are antithetical to the progressive arena of art-making that fuels our passion for cinema. But that arena hasn’t gone anywhere, and there are plenty of new movies to discuss. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss their feelings about the election results and how it may or may not impact the film industry.

‘Planet Earth II’ Clip: Grizzly Bears Shake and Shimmy to ‘Jungle Boogie’ – Watch

Last week BBC’s acclaimed nature show “Planet Earth II” debuted and set the internet ablaze with the baby iguana and racer snake video. This week, ahead of episode 2, the British network released a new clip in which grizzly bears shake and shimmy to the tunes of Kool & The Gang’s hit “Jungle Boogie.”

Remote cameras were left in the Canadian Rockies in hopes to film grizzly bears in their natural habitat. What they got when they looked at the footage was more than they bargained for.

The second episode in the six-part series will focus on great mountain ranges, which are some of the planet’s most spectacular landscapes, but are also unforgiving places to live in. Only a few animals have what it takes to live at extreme altitude, and the upcoming episode will show a unique and intimate glimpse into the magnificent animals’ secretive lives.

‘Westworld’: What It’s Like to Co-Star With (And Get Groped By) Thandie Newton

As “Westworld” has evolved over the last several weeks, brothel madam Maeve, played by Thandie Newton, has become one of the show’s most intriguing characters. The first indication that something weird was going on with her came during the Season 2 episode “Chestnut,” when memories of a past life collided with behavioral malfunctions, leading to a moment when Maeve tries to seduce a female guest visiting the park – but fails.

Getting the full court press from Newton was actress Christine Weatherup, playing the role of “Female Guest.”  Weatherup thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “Of all the people to be groped by, not only is she amazingly beautiful, but also a genuinely kind and nice person,” she told IndieWire.

How ‘Arrival’ Cinematographer Bradford Young Transcends Sci-Fi with Poetry

After being overlooked for his stunning work on “Selma,” cinematographer Bradford Young will have another opportunity for an Oscar nomination with Denis Villeneuve’s sublime “Arrival.” If he were to land one, he’d join Remi Adefarasin (“Elizabeth”) as the only other African American honored in the category.

Indeed, Young’s poetic imagery helps transcend the sci-fi trappings, enveloping Amy Adams’ remarkable linguist Dr. Louise Banks in a strange, ethereal atmosphere in this alien contact movie about time, memory and mortality — and what it means to be human. The timing couldn’t be better for such a hopeful parable.

“I was free to be more imaginative and use all 360 degrees of the environment,” Young told IndieWire, referring to the fact that “Arrival” marks his first contemporary movie after three successive period pieces (“Pawn Sacrifice,” “A Most Violent Year” and “Selma”).

‘Mr. Robot’ Creator Sam Esmail ‘Leaks’ Season 3 Script With Elliot’s Thoughts on Donald Trump

Many in Hollywood, as well as many in this country, are still struggling with the fact that Donald Trump won the election. It seems that this result is even affecting fictional characters, including Elliot from “Mr. Robot.”

The series creator, Sam Esmail, “leaked” a page from the Season 3 script in where Elliot, portrayed by Emmy Award winner Rami Malek, is back in therapy with Krista, and is very disappointed with society.

“I asked you this question before but you never responded. I’d like it if you answered this time,” she begins. “What is it about society that disappoints you so much?” Krista asks.

Elliot replies by saying, “Oh, that’s easy. Donald Trump was just elected President of the United States.”

‘Uncle Kent 2’ Exclusive Posters: Check Out The Potential Sequels In the ‘Uncle Kent’ Franchise

In 2011, Joe Swanberg directed the film “Uncle Kent,” about 40-year-old stoner cartoonist Kent (Kent Osborne) who spends a weekend trying to sleep with visiting house guest Kate (Jennifer Prediger), a woman whom he met on Chatroulette. Despite few people actually seeing the film, Swanberg, Osborne and director Todd Rohal have created a sequel “Uncle Kent 2,” a meta-comedy about Kent trying to create a follow-up to the 2011 film by traveling to a comic-book convention and confronting the end of the world. Out of SXSW, Indiewire’s own Eric Kohn described it as “the craziest movie sequel ever” and said that it “provides the ultimate rebuke to formulaic storytelling.” Check out some exclusive posters for fictional sequels in the “Uncle Kent” universe.

‘Elle’: Why Paul Verhoeven’s Rape Revenge Drama is Essential Viewing, Even for the Squeamish

As Paul Verhoeven’s controversial Isabelle Huppert-starring “Elle” finally hits theaters this weekend, IndieWire’s Kate Erbland and Anne Thompson traded notes on the bold film and its depiction of rape, female empowerment and the power of humor in the face of unexpected trauma.

Kate Erbland: I confess that I balked a little when I saw our own Eric Kohn’s early review of the film out of Cannes, which calls the film “a lighthearted rape-revenge story,” but having now seen the film at last month’s New York Film Festival, I struggle to find better wording. It’s both of those things, lighthearted and a rape-revenge story, and that’s a nearly impossible combination to make work, no matter who is behind it, and “Elle” has got some serious wattage to recommend it.

The film stars the always-wonderful Isabelle Huppert as the “post-feminist” Michele, a hard-driving career woman »

2017 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

Read More: 2017 Oscar Predictions

The Academy has been giving out the Best Animated Feature prize for 15 years now, and Pixar has claimed nine victories, the most of any studio. This feat bodes well for “Finding Dory,” the studio’s critically hailed blockbuster sequel to Oscar-winner “Finding Nemo.” In this category, at least, sequels are not a bad thing — “Toy Story 3” took home two Oscars.

Pixar’s home, Walt Disney Animation Studios, meanwhile, has been on a meteoric rise over the past several years, notching back-to-back wins for “Frozen” and “Big Hero 6” in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The studio is in the midst of another golden age, and this year’s smash hit “Zootopia” will easily find a place among the year’s nominees. Not only is the film a critical darling, but it has passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Also in the mix is upcoming timeless Pacific Islands myth “Moana, »
