Denzel Washington Stuns With ‘Fences’: How He Dodged Broadway’s Stagey Curse

7 November 2016 9:57 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Transporting a lauded Broadway play to the screen is a mixed bag. Among those that hug the yellow section of Metacritic are “Phantom of the Opera,” “M. Butterfly,” “Evita,” “Nine,” “For Colored Girls,” “The Producers,” “Rent,” “Carnage,” and more. Too often, a script’s theater origins condemn a film adaptation to the curse of being “stagey.” It’s a transition that requires real skill — and Denzel Washington has it.

In his third directorial outing (“The Debaters,” “Antwone Fisher”), Washington skirts the hazards of “opening up” a play by chasing honest emotions. A  two-time acting Oscar winner, Washington knocks ’50s Pittsburgh drama “Fences” out of the park, both as director and disgruntled former baseball player Troy Maxson. Viola Davis as Rose Maxson, and Mykelti Williamson as her husband’s brain-damaged brother Gabriel, are also likely supporting Oscar players. (Davis made the call to change her status to supporting, partly to take »

Denzel Washington, Viola Davis Become Instant Oscar Frontrunners in ‘Fences’

5 November 2016 10:36 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Denzel Washington’s big-screen adaptation of August Wilson’s “Fences” has arrived, and it’s an Oscar player to reckon with this year. But that’s hardly a surprise for a project based on Pulitzer Prize-winning source material that has landed major Tony Awards in two separate Broadway productions.

The film unspooled for industry audiences Saturday, screening in Westwood before a crowd that included Screen Actors Guild nominating committee members, Academy voters and press. Washington was on hand for a post-screening Q&A moderated by Variety‘s Jenelle Riley, along with co-stars Viola Davis, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya Sidney.

When asked what drew him to the role of Troy Maxson, Washington let loose a chuckle and quipped, “The role of Troy Maxson.” Indeed, when producer Scott Rudin first sent him the script for the film, which Wilson had penned himself, Washington wasn’t »

Viola Davis will be campaigned in Best Supporting Actress for “Fences”

25 October 2016 10:52 AM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Back on Sunday, a rumor that had been buzzing around the industry came true. If you’ve been following my early Oscar predictions, you may have noticed that when I predict Viola Davis, I give her a Best Actress nomination for Fences but list “Could Go Supporting” next to it. Well, now we know that she actually will be competing in Best Supporting Actress for her work in Fences, as reports have her being submitted there for Screen Actors Guild awards consideration. This has so far been met with a mixed response, which is pretty silly considering no one has seen the film, but it does clarify two different races, and that’s pretty noteworthy here. Once again for those not in the know, the movie is a cinematic version of the stage play of the same name. The plot centers around an African American father named Troy (Washington) and »

‘Fences’: Viola Davis Will Campaign for the Supporting Actress Oscar

23 October 2016 12:35 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

As a sign that the Best Actress race is the most competitive in years, Paramount has confirmed that they are promoting Denzel Washington’s “Fences” costar Viola Davis in the Best Supporting Actress category. Oscar watchers have been waiting for this shoe to drop.

Anyone who has seen the August Wilson play (which won Tonys in 2010 for Best Revival of a Play, Best Actor for Washington and Best Actress for Davis) knows that the popular “How to Get Away with Murder” star, who has been Oscar-nominated twice (“Doubt,” “The Help”) more than stands up to Washington’s unhappy, angry husband onstage.

While Davis has huge respect from the Actors Branch and is expected to explode on-screen in “Fences,” she could have a better chance of taking home the gold statue in supporting. For Best Actress she’d be up against Amy Adams (“Arrival”), Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”), Isabelle Huppert »

Fences Trailer – Denzel Washington Directs Himself In Powerful Play Adaptation

28 September 2016 7:28 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Even in the trailer, Fences can be hard to watch, as the character Troy (Denzel Washington) is immediately brought to bear, and a major clash with his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), is revealed.

The cast may be a big draw here, and you have to include the fact that Washington directs, but the film’s biggest asset is that August Wilson adapts his own Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play. Adaptations are a tricky game to begin with, but when you have something that is so precisely constructed, dealing with questionable perspectives (just catch Troy’s “like you” tirade in the trailer), you don’t want another creative mindset getting the idea that they can make it better, or more “movie friendly.”

The film opens December 25th, and is a lock for a lot of award season attention.

I’d say mark your calendars, but I can’t imagine actually »

Denzel Washington’s Fences: the first trailer

Denzel Washington stars in and directs Fences - and the first trailer has landed...

Denzel Washington barely stops, it seems, and in between his roles in the likes of The Magnificent Seven and The Equalizer 2, he’s found time to film his third movie as director. It’s an adaptation of the Tony-award winning play, Fences.

Washington takes the lead role in the movie too, and he’s attracted an impressive cast, including Viola Davis (who, along with Washington, reprises her role following playing it in the recent Broadway production), Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya Sydney,

The play was written by August Wilson, who has also penned the screenplay for the movie. And a first trailer for Fences has landed, which you can see right here…

Paramount is releasing Fences into UK cinemas, although it hasn’t announced a release date over here yet. »

A few hours ago, we got a first look at one of the season’s potentially biggest contenders. Yes, a First Trailer arrived for Fences, the adaptation of the Broadway show of the same name. Directed by and starring Denzel Washington, it may very well be one of the only contenders that can challenge La La Land for frontrunner status at the Academy Awards this year. We’ll get into its Oscar hopes later, and obviously you’ll be able to see the Trailer at the end of this piece, but first up, let us discuss the film a bit. Some of you might not be familiar with the play, and that’s perfectly alright. I’m here to help. Again, the movie is a cinematic version of the stage play of the same name.
