Storyline
Ross Poldark returns to England after fighting in the American Revolution. His family and friends thought he was dead. The woman he hoped to marry is now engaged to his cousin. His father is dead, and the property he has inherited has been allowed to deteriorate. It is the late 1700s in Cornwall, England. This is a family drama, but is also about the challenges and conflicts between the rich and the poor. It is a time when fishermen are not catching much fish, tin and copper mines are closing down because prices are too low, but the price of food and rents are high. Ross faces the challenge of making his land productive, caring for the tenants who rely on him, and trying to win back the woman he loved - or finding a reason to live without her.

Although there are many things that are better than the original series, I find I'm not drawn to many of the characters. Prudie and Jud were supposed to be bumbling, slothful, but humorous (Jud was bald and toothless, which the old series got right) Demelza was small and sometimes cheeky, whereas the new one is tall and angular, and more mature (she was only 15 or 16yrs old when she first appeared in the book).
Also at the ball, the dancers would have either powdered their hair or worn wigs, and Ross WOULD NOT have gone out anywhere with an unshaven look!
I've sometimes found that older series had more charm than the new ones, and this seems to be the case here. But for those who may be of a slightly younger generation than myself, I'm sure it's probably perfect, and hopefully some may be moved to try the books, which in my humble opinion are 10 times better!
