Quentin Tarantino Reveals He’s Researching 1970 For A New Project

23 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If you asked Quentin Tarantino which decade he’d choose to live in permanently, the answer would likely be the 1970s. The director has always shown an immense passion for various movie movements of the era — Blaxploitation, the explosion of martial arts films, New American cinema — and recently shared that his preferred vision of Luke Cage would be from that time. And of course, his movies have always nodded heavily to those influences as well, so it’s not a big surprise that Tarantino is diving deep into the start of the decade for a new project.

Bob Dylan Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first American to win the top honor since Toni Morrison in 1993 and the first musician to be recognized.

The 75-year old singer-songwriter was honored for his intricate, evocative lyrics, and for his alternately political and phantasmagoric anthems such as “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Forever Young,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands,” “Rainy Day Women#12 & 35,” and  “The Times They Are a-Changin’.” He joins the ranks of William FaulknerGabriel García Márquez, Saul BellowWilliam Butler Yeats, and Ernest Hemingway —  all previous laureates.

In selecting Dylan, the Nobel committee praised the singer and songwriter “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” His prize comes with 8 million Swedish kronor, which roughly equals $900,000. He will be honored in Stockholm, Sweden, in December.

Dylan’s selection is a break with tradition. Although he has authored a book of poem, »

Dario Fo Obituary (1926-2016)

13 October 2016 5:03 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Nobel prize-winning dramatist and satirist who touched the heights of genius

The dramatist, director, actor, painter and political provocateur Dario Fo has died aged 90. When Fo was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1997, the Swedish committee praised his achievement in reviving the traditions of the giullari – the jester-cum-minstrels of the middle ages who improvised their comedy, jibing at the establishment of the times. His greatest achievement as an actor-author was Mistero Buffo (1969), a reworking of medieval mystery plays, which he performed with masterly skill as a one-man show, making exhilarating use of an onomatopoeic language called grammelot and a mixture of dialects. Other actors have since done their best to emulate him, with varying degrees of success, and his texts will continue to inspire lively theatrical invention.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read on unless you’ve seen Season 6, episode 5 of “American Horror Story,” titled “Chapter 5.”

Four score and fives episodes later, “American Horror Story” vet Evan Peters has finally made his “Roanoke” debut… and he’s killed within the first ten minutes.

But fans can rest assured, because this is “AHS,” where no one is ever truly dead, especially this season. He returns as an unlikely aid to Shelby, Matt, and Flora, who, by the end of the episode, manage to escape their Roanoke nightmare. But let’s break it all down.

We first learn who Peters actually is, and in line with some speculation, he is Edward Philippe Mott, the man who built the house. He’s an interesting man, to say the least: escaping city life in favor of the country, he buys the cursed plot of land and builds his mansion on it. He also escaped the city for fear, it »

Lead-produced by Pantelion, along with Alcon Entertainment, “Frida” lead Martha Higareda’s NeverEnding Media, and Germany’s Constantin Film, “No Manches Frida” is a Mexican version of Constantin’s 2013 box office hit “Fack ju Gohte,” which follows the travails of an ex-con, played by comic Omar Chaparro, who takes a job at a rowdy high school to gain access to his buried loot.

Busan: Festival Director Kang Soo-youn Hails 21st Biff a ‘Miracle’

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“The fact that we successfully managed to host this year’s edition against all odds itself is a miracle,” Busan Film Festival director Kang Soo-youn told Variety.

The two-year struggle between festival organizers and city authorities ended up costing the festival in terms of lost sponsorship and lower star power. It also tore the local film industry into two.

“We had to largely downsize the Asian Film Market and skip sidebar events, because we didn’t manage enough sponsorship,” said Kang. She added that there were more practical difficulties. “In the morning of Oct. 5, I woke up, feeling that the hotel was shaking. I went straight to the Haeundae beach in the storm to check the Biff Village only to witness debris floating in the sea. The first thing that came to my mind was ‘maybe we’re not meant to make it happen this year’.”

Lumière Festival: 90% of U.S. Films Shot Before 1914 Have Disappeared, Warns Gaumont President Nicolas Seydoux

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Lyon, France — The global market for restored cinema classics is improving, but preservation efforts need to be stepped up before a larger portion  of humanity’s cinematic heritage vanishes, warned Gaumont president Nicolas Seydoux speaking at the Grand Lyon’s Lumière Festival in France dedicated to vintage cinema.

“We estimate that in the U.S. 90% of movies made before 1914 have disappeared,” Seydoux cautioned. “In France we don’t know the amount we’ve lost, but I think the fact we can reproduce them [digitally] gives us new hope,” he added.

French film journalist Fabrice Leclerc in a presentation noted that, by his count, “one fourth of America’s cinematic heritage is now preserved outside the U.S.”

Seydoux pointed out that while in France the prime market for film restoration is television, thanks in part to the proliferation of digital distribution channels “it’s clear today that there are markets for restored films. »

5 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Cold War will rage anew on SundanceTV now that the cabler and FremantleMedia International have set a deal for season two of period drama “Deutschland83.”

The German-language drama set in 1983 bowed last year on SundanceTV to generally rave reviews and a small but devoted audience. Creators Anna and Joerg Winger envision the political thriller running three seasons, taking viewers up to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

The series stars Jonas Nay as an earnest East German soldier who is reluctantly recruited to go undercover in West Berlin as a spy for the Stasi. “Deutschland86” will jump three years into 1986, when Nay’s Martin Rauch is sent off to Africa to fight in the last gasp of combat waged in the name of Communism, in Angola.

“Deutschland83,” which earned a Peabody Award, debuted with much fanfare last year on German broadcaster Rtl. The show garnered generally strong reviews but the ratings were a disappointment. The »

The Gore-Gore Guy: Herschell Gordon Lewis, Rest in Pieces

8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

You can’t always take a film director at his word. Herschell Gordon Lewis, the self-proclaimed “Wizard of Gore” who passed away, at the age of 90, on Sept. 26, was way far down on the totem pole of filmmaker respectability — in fact, he probably occupied its second-to-last rung, with Edward D. Wood Jr. on the very bottom. When it came to discussing the art of directing, Lewis made no claims for himself. At all. Next to him, even a low-budget exploitation mercenary like Roger Corman came off as a bohemian artiste. Lewis’ theory of filmmaking revolved around one thing and one thing only: He was in it for the money. He repeated this in countless interviews, like the one he gave to John Waters for Waters’ great first book, “Shock Value,” in 1981. Lewis, who invented the gore film, talked about movies in strictly utilitarian terms, and that became part of his legend. »

7 Controversial Nobel Prize-Winning Writers, From Bob Dylan to Dario Fo (Photos)

It may be literature’s greatest honor, but the Nobel Prize has sometimes drawn negative attention to writers, too. Bob Dylan Some critics claim the 2016 Nobel winner was undeserving because his songs contain unattributed work from others. Others believed the groundbreaking folk artist belonged more to the world of pop music than to that of letters. Harold Pinter The English playwright was slammed for his left-wing politics and sometimes scatological point of view. Elfriede Jelinek One Nobel member was so upset about the consideration given to this “chaotic and pornographic” Austrian writer that he refused to participate in the deliberations. »
