NGO's, Military, Social Networks, and Civilian Roles in Conflict Resolution

Kony2012 brought up a lot of discussion on the role of the military in international peacebuilding. "Complex Peace Operations and Civil-Military Relations" ow.ly/9En7i discusses civil-military roles in reducing conflicts, while "Peacebuilding and NGOs" ow.ly/9EnZv examines the roles NGOs and State-civil society interactions play in reducing conflict.
"Social Capital and Peace-Building" http://ow.ly/9EuaC examines the impact of social capital in both inciting violence and in reducing conflict.
This new edited collection illustrates the paradoxical power of social capital in creating and resolving conflict. This is the first book to bring the two faces of social capital together in a single ...

The use of the term "white" (if it is at statistics, it is Caucasian, and indeed Slavic Race or Mediterranean Peoples are the two groups immediatley involved) is becoming increasingly a disparaging comment deserving of legal action for heinous academic behavior. "We've" (I thought that included the groups and individuals using "white" professionally) been asked to refrain from all kinds of terms by all kinds of groups (I've been with "retardation" and its use to hurt individuals), must be "us who are white", and I'd appreciate the same consideration for a change. As the article above said, most "whites" prefer to be called Americans, and I have now had to "revert" to American-Polish (as a cultural minority smaller than "black"). All set yet?! It's been 20 years and it is getting worse. Transition to America done. Julie Ann Racino about.me/julieannracino

As I edit my own article for publication (*ahem* not that it's due tomorrow or anything), I find myself with a question: is it now acceptable to submit scholarly articles whose titles and texts contain cuss words? The Fall 2011 issue of Western Humanities Review contains an article titled "The Humanities, RCM, and Bullshit"; its thesis seems to be that Responsibility Centered Management (be that what it is) is, well, a bunch of bullshit. The cheeky, screed-like tone and clearly subjective writing style ('bullshit' and its synonyms make several appearances throughout) make this article sound more like it belongs in a blog than in a professional publication - but maybe the lines there have been blurred now and I just never caught on.

Alternately, is this also an example of "fast-food scholarship"? Curious...

Healthcare reform is in the news a lot lately. Understanding Health Care Reform: Bridging the Gap Between Myth and Reality explores the strengths and weaknesses of the healthcare reforms and provides readers with the information to make informed decisions and to help counter media and political bias and the influence of the for-profit health care industry.
After nearly a year of debate, in March 2010, Congress passed and the president signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to reform the U.S. health care system. The most significant social...

“These Royal Institution Christmas lectures provide the strongest counter-example I know to the conceit that research ideas are too difficult to explain to and too abstruse to excite the general public. Most of us just don’t work hard enough at it.”
