Deir Ezzor – A US-led coalition airstrike has killed at least ten Islamic State (ISIS) militants, including the group’s military commander in Deir ez-Zor city, Abu Muhajir al-Maghribi. Local activists reported that the air raid occurred on Saturday and targeted an ISIS convoy in the Mareiya District near the Deir ez-Zor Military Airport.

“Abu Muahjir al-Maghribi had led several ISIS military campaigns against the Syrian regime’s forces as well as the rebel groups in eastern Syria,” media activist Hajji al-Deri told ARA News, citing an ISIS official. “His death is a heavy loss for the Islamic State.”

Western Deir ez-Zor is a Syrian government enclave, encircled on all size by ISIS jihadists. Clashes between the Syrian Army and ISIS have recently increased in both size and frequency as the latter has repeatedly attempted to storm the military airport.

“[On Sunday,] fierce clashes took place in the neighborhoods of al-Umal, al-Jbellah and Sinaa after ISIS hit regime-held areas with mortar shells,” human rights activist Alaa al-Hadi told ARA News in Deir ez-Zor. He added that ISIS militants were eventually forced to withdraw towards their bases after failing to make any progress.
