The arrest of Shailene Woodley for demonstrating against the Dakota Access oil pipeline (DAPL) near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation drew attention around the world, as her costars in various projects rallied around her, and her Facebook broadcast racked up 4.4 million views.

"SHAI WAS ARRESTED TODAY for protesting the North Dakota Pipeline,” wrote Fault in Our Stars costar Ansel Elgort on Twitter, linking to a Huffington Post Q&A with Sierra Club attorney Doug Hayes that defines the issues. “Read about what she was protesting here."

Celebrity support flooded in for the actress after her arrest on Monday October 10 with other water protectors at a Dakota Access oil pipeline (DAPL) construction site. She paid a $500 fine and prepared for an October 24 court date, according to USA Today.

“Shailene Woodley has been released from the Morton County Jail in North Dakota," her spokesperson told Us Weekly in a statement on Tuesday. "She appreciates the outpouring of support, not only for her, but more importantly, for the continued fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline."

The star of Snowden, Divergent and The Descendants, among other films, was among 28 unarmed people arrested by riot police for peacefully demonstrating at the site where Energy Transfer Partners is working on the 1,172-mile-long, $3.8 billion pipeline set to wend its way through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois, carrying as many as 550,000 barrels of crude daily from the Bakken oil fields. She livestreamed the arrest on Facebook.

She spent much of the summer out at Standing Rock, when she wasn’t out promoting Snowden or traveling to rallies against the pipeline in Washington DC and New York City.

Actor Mark Ruffalo also spoke out in support of Woodley, as did Maggie Q, her costar in the Divergent series.

“I stand with @shailenewoodley for standing with the Standing Rock Water Protectors. #NoDAPL,” tweeted Ruffalo, who is outspoken against climate change and walked with Indigenous Peoples alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2014 People’s Climate March in New York City.

“You can arrest someone but you CANNOT silence them,” wrote Maggie Q on Twitter.

Mainstream media picked up on the arrest and mentioned the pipeline controversy. But MSNBC commentator Lawrence O’Donnell took it a step further by noting the irony of date of the arrests, including Woodley’s, on criminal trespassing charges. It was for many (though not for all) a celebration of Christopher Columbus, who he dubbed “the greatest trespasser in human history."

Woodley had words of her own, poetic phrases posted to Twitter after her release: “One day, baby, we’ll sing our poetry. the words dripping from our tongues wet with ripened patience. and the lyrics, the sweet fruits born from the seeds our aging hands are now sowing.”

Heartfelt thank you goes to Mark Ruffalo and Maggie Q for vocally expressing your support to stop this deadly act upon our environment. One cannot paint a picture of the millions of lives of humans, animals, and plants that will suffer once this pipeline breaks, and it will break. There is too much pressure to carry the millions of gallons of oil and water that will be pumped per second. No man can guarantee that it will not burst and the fact is that, these foreign corporations and financial institutions backing them will quietly walk away and let it become someone else's problems. The writingis on the wall, brothers and sisters. We need Hollywood publicity, educational institutions, medical & health organizations, and professional athletes to stand up with the rest of the world whom has already joined to stop this genocidal catastrophe from occurring - not next month, not after it happens - NOW! Thank you again Shailene, Mark and Maggie Q! Where are your voices Wayne Newton, Lou Diamond Phillips, Angelina Jolie, Benjamin Bratt, Tori Amos and Heather Locklear (who have Native American blood)? The door is wide open for you to join this movement.
