The movie centers around 45-year-old Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), a "career transition counselor" whose job it is to travel around the country firing people from their jobs. When his own job is threatened by Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), a young upstart who has found a way to fire people via the Internet, Ryan embarks on a firing trip to show Natalie that her methods won't work. In the film, Ryan is asked by Craig Gregory if he remembers a Karen Barnes, an employee Natalie downsized. He says no, which is a lie. According to the commentary, Ryan does this to protect Natalie from any sort of legal liability, as he views her as his surrogate daughter. Edit

This is answered in the scene where we see Natalie help Ryan take a photo of his cardboard cutout sister and soon-to-be brother-in-law on the dock. Natalie asks where Alex lives and Ryan replies "Chicago." This is obviously a conversation Ryan and Alex had sometime during their time together but does not happen on camera. So the fact that Ryan showed up at Alex's house in Chicago later in the film is not actually a faux pas as some have suggested. Edit

If a flier reaches a total of 1,000,000 American Airlines miles over a period of years, he/she receives a lifetime Gold membership, with no further miles required to sustain that membership, whether or not the flier travels within a calendar year. A total of 2,000,000 miles is an automatic lifetime Platinum membership, again with no further requirements.
