Quentin Tarantino Reveals He’s Researching 1970 For A New Project

18 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If you asked Quentin Tarantino which decade he’d choose to live in permanently, the answer would likely be the 1970s. The director has always shown an immense passion for various movie movements of the era — Blaxploitation, the explosion of martial arts films, New American cinema — and recently shared that his preferred vision of Luke Cage would be from that time. And of course, his movies have always nodded heavily to those influences as well, so it’s not a big surprise that Tarantino is diving deep into the start of the decade for a new project.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn: Sequel Will Have Strong Women

16 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn is promising stronger story lines for women in the upcoming sequel because he is tired of female characters just being “the girl.” “I am sick of stories where there are a bunch of fully realized male characters and one female character, whose primary characteristic is simply being ‘the girl’ or the personality-less object of some man’s affections,” Gunn wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “I’m not sick of this because I’m politically correct — those of you who know me know I am far from that — but because it’s boring, »

The Gore-Gore Guy: Herschell Gordon Lewis, Rest in Pieces

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

You can’t always take a film director at his word. Herschell Gordon Lewis, the self-proclaimed “Wizard of Gore” who passed away, at the age of 90, on Sept. 26, was way far down on the totem pole of filmmaker respectability — in fact, he probably occupied its second-to-last rung, with Edward D. Wood Jr. on the very bottom. When it came to discussing the art of directing, Lewis made no claims for himself. At all. Next to him, even a low-budget exploitation mercenary like Roger Corman came off as a bohemian artiste. Lewis’ theory of filmmaking revolved around one thing and one thing only: He was in it for the money. He repeated this in countless interviews, like the one he gave to John Waters for Waters’ great first book, “Shock Value,” in 1981. Lewis, who invented the gore film, talked about movies in strictly utilitarian terms, and that became part of his legend. »

‘Jackie’: Natalie Portman Explains How She Looked Past Her Own ‘Common Perceptions’ for Her Lauded Role

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In Chilean director Pablo Larraín’s first English-language outing, the daring Jacqueline Kennedy biopic “Jackie,” Natalie Portman turns in some of her finest work yet as the beloved First Lady in the days just after the assassination of her husband. The film has already garnered significant buzz on the awards circuit, prompting Fox Searchlight to pick up the project out of Toronto, and it was with that momentum that Larraín and Portman brought the film to the New York Film Festival on Thursday night for the film’s U.S. premiere.

It’s Portman’s performance — one years in the making, as the film was produced by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who had long pictured his “Black Swan” leading lady in the title role — that has grabbed the most attention, and while it’s still early days, it’s hard to imagine an awards season that won’t feature her work front and center. »

X-Men: Apocalypse,” the latest entry in the successful superhero franchise, earned 20th Century Fox the top spot on both national home video sales charts for the week ended Oct.9.

The horror film “The Purge: Election Year,” the third film in the franchise from Universal Pictures, debuted at a distant No. 2 on the Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales. The film – at $79 million a bigger commercial success than its two predecessors – sold about 16% as many units as “X-Men,” which generated $155.4 million in domestic box office receipts.
