The Buzz: Rare is the movie adaptation that differs so much from its source material and manages to exist on its own successfully, so let's credit screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson for turning in her best material since Secretary.
The Birth of a Nation (2016)- Biography | Drama
Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the antebellum South, orchestrates an uprising.
Director:Nate Parker |

The Buzz: Nate Parker's controversial past has supplanted itself as the topic of discussion here, though Fox Searchlight has stood by their filmmaker and not flinched once as Parker took on the task of trying to make a form of amends for the rape charges levied against him when he was a student at Penn State University in 1999. For some of us, it's hard to divide our attention solely on Parker's bold historical film since the other real-life story ended so tragically.
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (2016)- Comedy
Imaginative quiet teenager Rafe Katchadorian is tired of his middle school's obsession with the rules at the expense of any and all creativity. Desperate to shake things up, Rafe and his best friends have come up with a plan: break every single rule in the school and let the students run wild.
Director:Steve Carr |

The Buzz: Maybe we're too old to get a realistic sense of what's going on here, but the movie version of Rafe Khatchadorian feels authentic to the world created by author James Patterson is his long-running series of books about the artisitically gifted/socially challenged young man. And we're not just saying that since Lauren Graham plays Rafe's mom and we're totally from the "Gilmore Girls" generation.
The Greasy Strangler (2016) - [Limited]- Comedy | Horror | Thriller
Ronnie runs a Disco walking tour with his son, Brayden. When a sexy woman takes the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her love. It also signals the arrival of an oily strangler who stalks the streets at night.
Director:Jim Hosking |

The Buzz: Director Jim Hosking apparently has made one of the most out-there movies in some time, the kind of experience that leaves you wondering about the intention and stability of its creators. To us, The Greasy Strangler looks like a live-action episode of "Rick and Morty" where the two main characters are father and son instead of uncle and nephew. That's meant as a compliment.
Blue Jay (2016) - [Limited]- Drama
Meeting by chance when they return to their tiny California hometown, two former high-school sweethearts reflect on their shared past.
Director:Alexandre Lehmann |
|

The Buzz: Even if you can telegraph some of the interplay between these two characters -- small-town high-school sweethearts who reunite as adults -- the chance to watch Sarah Paulson and Mark Duplass go through the emotions is an opportunity to observe two fine actors workshop it out.
The Battle of Algiers (1966) - [Re-release]- Drama | War
In the 1950s, fear and violence escalate as the people of Algiers fight for independence from the French government.
Director:Gillo Pontecorvo |
|

The Buzz: The masterpiece famously reviewed by Pauline Kael receives a 4K restoration for its 50th anniversary.
