From a single campus in Melbourne with just 400 students in 1961, Monash has grown into an ecosystem of campuses, education centres and partnerships spanning the globe. With approximately 60,000 students (and 290,000 alumni) from over 170 countries, Monash is now Australia's largest university.

A desire to make a difference informs everything the University does, but it goes beyond good intentions – Monash is making an impact, both locally and internationally. A global university with a presence on four continents and ambitious plans for the future.

The youngest member of the prestigious Group of Eight, Monash has fostered a strong record of innovation through research collaboration and engagement with industry.

Striving to be international, excellent, enterprising and inclusive, the university has emerged as an education and research powerhouse committed to the great challenges of the age.

International

Campuses are located throughout Victoria and international campuses operate in Malaysia and in South Africa, with centres in the People's Republic of China, Italy and India. Each provides an environment rich in culture and identifies and nurtures talent – turning that talent into ability.

Students are challenged and supported so they have an enriched university experience and it’s a friendly university – no matter which campus you attend.

Excellence

Making a difference takes energy and idealism as well as experience and wisdom. As a young university, the outlook at Monash is progressive and optimistic. Free of cynicism, tradition or convention, the research and teaching and learning addresses the great challenges of the age.

The best scholars are attracted here, but Monash is not elitist. The doors are opened for the hard working and motivated and those determined to make a difference. A lot of good has been achieved by the University in areas like IVF and reproduction, road safety, sustainability, malaria, dengue fever and influenza treatment, and stem cells for many years, and in some cases, decades. The future lies in the hands of those who are engaged with Monash today and who come prepared to take on the challenges of a world facing rapid change.

Enterprising

Students and staff are filled with enterprising capabilities, a result of enduring partnerships with government and industry. The focus is always on how to empower people to make a significant impact for the betterment of communities. Things like the bionic eye, the anti-flu drug Relenza and the Inhaled Oxytocin project are changing lives.

Shared ambitions move Monash forward, faster. The more relevant, useful and powerful connections that can be made, the greater the impact will be.

Inclusive

A supportive experience for students and staff, an optimistic outlook is provided with a desire to make a positive impact. Talented students and researchers are attracted to Monash, irrespective of social or economic circumstances. As a community of knowledge experts and innovation, ideas and cultures are shared in a quest for learning to be the best you can be.

Learning at Monash

What students want – and need – from a university differs between individuals. Some want to undertake a broad education while others have a specific career objective in mind and focus on that goal from day one. Some have difficulty deciding between two strong areas of interest while others want to pursue two study areas at once. Monash courses have been structured with students in mind and no matter what their goals, there are courses to suit their needs – Monash students can define their own path.

Learning at Monash is supported by an outward looking curriculum, multifaceted modes of delivery, flexible and purposeful learning spaces, and opportunities to develop a range of practical skills. Students are prepared for the future that awaits, whatever path they choose.

Research that matters

Monash has long been an incubator for ground breaking research. Things that we take for granted now, such as seat belts in cars, Influenza drugs and IVF treatment, would not exist without the initial work of Monash researchers.

Today, Australia’s largest university continues to lead and collaborate with teams around the world. Although Monash conducts research across numerous fields of study – over 150 in all – the focus is on four specialisations, four leading capabilities.

They are: health and wellbeing; new industries and productivity; sustainable environments; and resilient cultures and communities.

Rankings

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2015-2016) Monash was ranked 73 overall, and is ranked in the top 50 universities globally in the 'Engineering and Technology', 'Arts and Humanities' and 'Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health' disciplines.

With some of the best academics in the world and professional staff who are revolutionising the way the University operates, the ways Monash students can succeed are as limitless as their imaginations.
