'Magnifcent Seven' and 'Storks' Look to Turn Around Box Office Fortunes

14 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

On the heels of the worst weekend of the year so far (based on cumulative gross for all titles) this weekend should perk things up a bit as MGM and Sony's The Magnificent Seven remake and WB's animated feature Storks are looking at strong openings. Projecting just how well this weekend's newcomers will perform, however, is something that's raising a few eyebrows in the wake of recent weeks and last week's box office bloodbath where not one, but two of the week's three new wide releases came in well below expectations, and all three failed to open over $10 million. Industry expectations for Magnificent Seven and Storks have both films opening around $30+ million. For Storks this number appears to be about right on target, but for Magnificent Seven it seems grossly conservative. Sony is projecting a $30-32 million weekend, but if it doesn't top $40 million it would be a bit of a surprise. »

Finnish Film Affair: 'Tom Of Finland', 'Punk Syndrome' split Best Pitch prize

just now | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Talk at the event was dominated by the looming introduction of the Finnish tax incentive.

The works-in-progress jury at this year’s Finnish Film Affair (Sept 20-22) has split the $3,300 (€3000) Best Pitch prize between two films, Dome Karukoski’s Tom Of Finland, about the gay artist Touko Laaksonen, and documentary Post Punk Disorder, co-directors Jukka Kärkkäinen and J-p Passi’s sequel to their 2012 SXSW audience award winner The Punk Syndrome.

The event was dominated by discussions on two forthcoming landmarks - the films comprising part of the Finland 100 celebrations, marking the centenary since Finland declared itself independent, and the proposed film incentive, due to be rubber-stamped by parliament in December, which will deliver a 20-25% cash rebate to films in production in Finland.

The rebate would apply to productions with a budget of more than $2.2m (€2m) euros. The current average budget in Finland is close to $1.7m (€1.5m). It will apply to money spent on local »

’The Art of Flight’s’ Travis Rice Talks About ‘The Fourth Phase’

57 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

San Sebastian  Starring ace snowboarder Travis Rice, whose “The Art of Flight” was a milestone in the action sports movie genre, “The Fourth Phase” has an eco-context, the rain-ice-moisture hydrological circle which Rice and a posse of friends follow for 15,000 miles of North Pacific Rim from Japan to Alaska via the Kuril Islands, running big mountain lines. “While keeping everything good from ‘The Art of Flight,’ ‘The Fourth Phase’ clearly steps up the game in terms of storytelling and Travis’ willingness to open up,” commented Philipp Manderla,

The Art of Flight” was an overall No. 1 iTunes movie in the U.S. That said, “The Fourth Phase” is certainly not jut more of the same. Sure, there are sone extraordinary action sequences, in Wyoming in an early medley, then great runs down 50% slopes from mountain tops in Japan’s Alps, and others swerving and leaping through their deep-snow lower wooded flanks. »

My Ifp Film Week Experience, Part 2: The Pitch Perfect(ed)

2 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Read Part One of Isabel Sandoval’s Ifp Film Week Diary, “The Female Gaze, Anyone?”, here. Forget Project Greenlight. If anyone wants to do a reality series based on the No Borders pitch meetings, it would be a more grizzled Swingers meets The Hunger Games — but with lookbooks subbing for bows and arrows. The thing is, I’m sure somebody actually used that logline for their own project. The proceedings have a jovially survivalist element to them. While my No Borders project Lingua Franca is my third feature, it’s my first U.S. production so Film Week doubles as Indie Film Financing […] »

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney/ABC Television Group chief Ben Sherwood has given a big endorsement to Jimmy Kimmel serving as the host of the next Academy Awards telecast.

During a Q&A Thursday night at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, Sherwood also broached the subject of considering different Emmy categories for TV series based on the number of episodes produced per season. And he spoke about the challenges that ABC News and other news organizations face in trying to cover politics at a time when the electorate is so polarized that there are “no commonly agreed upon set of facts” up for discussion.

In his hourlong conversation with ABC News correspondent Nick Watt, Sherwood said ABC execs felt Kimmel, host of the Alphabet’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” late-night franchise, did a great job on Sunday’s Emmy Awards telecast and that he has demonstrated that he has the chops to »

‘Pitch’ Review: The First Female Professional Baseball Player Is Nearly Undone By Her Emotions

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

We are approaching a milestone in America: Hillary Clinton is on pace to become the first female President of the United States. It’s a landmark achievement thats weight has somehow been trumped by our need to avoid the end of the world (pun intended), but the far-reaching impact of a woman holding our nation’s highest office will be felt long beyond the lives of anyone reading these words. Not only is it historic — it’s significant.

Now, comparing that achievement with America’s first female professional baseball player may seem like a stretch. Even more so considering this ballplayer only exists on television, within the fictional world of “Pitch” created by Dan Fogelman and Rick Singer. Yet the connection is made within the series itself, as one of the first images we see is a vase of flowers delivered to freshly called-up San Diego Padres pitcher Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury, »
