Difficult Chapter, Tough Choices for Oscar Voters

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Another film awards season dawns. But before the early festivals in Venice, Telluride, and Toronto could even define the day, storm clouds had already gathered.

The controversy surrounding Fox Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition “The Birth of a Nation” — with director and star Nate Parker falling under heavy scrutiny in the wake of resurfaced rape allegations from a 1999 incident at Penn State University — has been a consistent point of discussion and deliberation for weeks. Everyone who covers this beat was immediately asked how the allegations might affect the film’s awards hopes. It’s a query at which one can only cringe.

A woman is dead. Who cares about a Hollywood bauble in the face of that?

But Oscar optics are noteworthy. Many outside the business view the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a monolith that makes singular decisions, not as a body whose nominations result from the views of a wide-ranging collective. »

‘Modern Family’ Will Feature Transgender Child Actor

23 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This Wednesday’s “Modern Family” will include an openly transgender child actor.

In the upcoming episode — entitled “A Stereotypical Day” — parents Cameron “Cam” (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) permit their daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) to have her transgender friend Tom over for a play-date. Both parents are filled with pride that they have done well in raising an accepting and open-minded child. But that pride quickly diminishes when Lily insults her friend, which they use as a teachable moment.

Lily’s playmate Tom will be played by 8-year-old transgender actor Jackson Millarker.

Ryan Case, who directed “A Stereotypical Day, posted this shot of Millarker on set. “This is Jackson Millarker,” Case announced. He’s 8 years old, from Atlanta, and just happens to be transgender. He plays Lily’s friend Tom in this week’s Modern Family and he’s wonderful. One of the many reasons I love being a part of this show.”

Will Tim Burton’s ‘Miss Peregrine’ Lead Box Office Newcomers?

32 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” will most assuredly win the upcoming weekend at the box office, but that doesn’t mean the movie will be in the clear. Made for $110 million (not counting marketing costs), the adventure fantasy book adaptation directed by Tim Burton is expected to open to roughly $30 million from 3,520 theaters. (With the studio set on a more conservative estimate in the mid 20s.) The movie should play well to audiences internationally and will need strong second and third weekends domestically to move out of the red. Also Read: 'Deepwater Horizon' Toronto Review: Mark. »
