Difficult Chapter, Tough Choices for Oscar Voters

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Another film awards season dawns. But before the early festivals in Venice, Telluride, and Toronto could even define the day, storm clouds had already gathered.

The controversy surrounding Fox Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition “The Birth of a Nation” — with director and star Nate Parker falling under heavy scrutiny in the wake of resurfaced rape allegations from a 1999 incident at Penn State University — has been a consistent point of discussion and deliberation for weeks. Everyone who covers this beat was immediately asked how the allegations might affect the film’s awards hopes. It’s a query at which one can only cringe.

A woman is dead. Who cares about a Hollywood bauble in the face of that?

But Oscar optics are noteworthy. Many outside the business view the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a monolith that makes singular decisions, not as a body whose nominations result from the views of a wide-ranging collective. »

Poll: Who Should Host the Oscars?

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s that time of year again: awards season is in full swing, and with that, the 2017 Oscars should soon start to take shape.

Though the Academy has yet to even announce producers yet, falling behind the usual timeline, speculation has already begun about who will host the year’s biggest night in movies. After doing, by most reviews, a bang-up job hosting the recent Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel seems like an obvious choice.

But there are other options, too. Might the Academy bring back tried-and-true bets like Ellen DeGeneres or Chris Rock? Or could former Golden Globes mainstays Amy Poehler and Tina Fey take to the Oscars stage? There’s also a possibly that the Academy could bring in new hosts, like Kevin Hart or Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

Weigh in below. We couldn’t fit all the potential candidates in our poll, so if there’s someone you »
