Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It Snags 10-Episode Series Order at Netflix

Netflix is officially a Spike Lee joint.

The streamer has placed a 10-episode series order for "She’s Gotta Have It", a contemporary remake of Lee’s 1985 seminal debut feature film. Lee will direct all 10 half-hour episodes and serve as an Ep with his producer-wife Tonya Lewis Lee.

The project had originally been eyed at Showtime.

Syfy Orders Three Pilots Including TV Adaptation of ‘The Machine’ Film

Syfy has picked up pilots for three potential series: “Haunted,” “Happy!” and “The Machine,” based on the 2013 movie of the same name.

All three drama hail from NBCUniversal’s in-house studio, Universal Cable Productions.

“The Machine,” based on the cult film that starred Caity Lotz and Toby Stephens, is set in a world that is being transformed by the emergence of artificial intelligence and explores the epic conflict between man and technology through the lives and motivations of six interwoven characters — each of whom holds the key to humanity’s victory or its destruction. The TV project will be exec produced by the film’s director Caradog James with Red & Black Films, and John Giwa-Amu, who also produced the original film, will serve as an Ep on the pilot.

Emmy-Nominated Actor James Stacy Dies at 80

James Stacy, who was Emmy-nominated for his role as a wheelchair-bound amputee in TV movie “Just a Little Inconvenience” and starred in Western series “Lancer,” died Thursday in Ventura, Calif. He was 80.

His turbulent life included being married to actresses Connie Stevens and Kim Darby, becoming a double amputee after a motorcycle accident, and serving prison time for child molestation.

His partner Antigoni Tsamparlis confirmed his death and said he had possibly suffered an allergic reaction after being admitted to the hospital.

Born Maurice W. Elias in Los Angeles, Stacy appeared on “The Donna Reed Show” (1958) and “The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet” (1952), and had a recurring role in “Wiseguy” (1990). He also appeared in numerous episodes of “Bonanza” (1973), “Gunsmoke” (1964-73) and received a producing credit for the film “My Kidnapper, My Love” (1980).

Sandra Lee Sells Memoir to Sony TV (Exclusive)

Sandra Lee is moving from the kitchen to behind the scenes. The celebrity chef is turning her life story into a TV movie, Variety has learned exclusively.

Her 2007 best-selling memoir “Made from Scratch” has been optioned by Sony for the small screen. The book chronicles Lee’s troubled childhood, as she coped with an abusive, drug-addicted mother and the responsibility then placed on her to take care of her siblings.

Helen Verno, Sony’s executive vice president of movies and miniseries, bought the rights to Lee’s memoir after a chance meeting with Lee on a recent business trip. Judith Verno (“The Lizzie Borden Chronicles,” “Masters of Sex”) will serve as executive producer, as will Lee. The search is now underway for a writer to develop the screenplay.

Beau Willimon Wins Re-Election to WGA East Council

House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon and five other incumbents won re-election to two-year terms for council seats for the Writers Guild of America East.

Voting opened on Aug. 24, with about 4,000 members eligible to cast ballots. The WGA East announced the results on Thursday.

Willimon was one of 16 candidates vying for seven open freelance seats. Three other incumbents — John Auerbach, Kyle Bradstreet, and Christopher Kyle — also won, along with newcomers Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, A.M. Homes, and Theresa Rebeck.

Gail Lee and Kathy McGee were re-elected to open staff seats, along with Matt Nelko, from six available candidates.

The WGA East negotiates jointly with the WGA West on the master contract with production companies. That deal expires on May 1 with no negotiations set yet.

Willimon promised in his candidate statement that he would be active in negotiations.
