Can 'Blair Witch' Scare 'Sully' from the Weekend's Top Spot?

10 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Lionsgate's Blair Witch arrives seventeen years after the original film and it's hoping to become the third horror film to top the weekend box office this year. Standing in its way is last weekend's champ, Sully, which has delivered record results over the past few days and is looking at a $20+ million second weekend. Other new wide releases include Universal's Bridget Jones's Baby, arriving twelve years after the last film, and Open Road's Snowden. Meanwhile, Pure Flix debuts the documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise in over 800 theaters and Freestyle releases Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy into approximately 300 theaters. Overall, while there could be a fight at the top with a couple of $20+ million weekends, this weekend's top twelve looks like it will be down from last year by about 10-11% with the top twelve generating around $89 million compared to $98.6 million over the same weekend last year. 2016 has already seen 11 films »

Emmanuelle Seigner and Eva Green are set to star in Roman Polanski’s psychological thriller “Based on a True Story (“D’apres une histoire vraie”), which will be sold internationally by Lionsgate.

Marking Polanski’s return to film-making since his 2013 drama “Venus in Fur,” the French-language “Based on a True Story” is an adaptation of Delphine de Vigan’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name. The book was published last year and won the Prix Renaudot and high school prize Goncourt des Lyceens.

Review: Oliver Stone's 'Snowden' is a return to form for Hollywood's master of agit-prop

just now | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

At first glance, there is little about Snowden that would seem to distinguish it from some of this year’s other “I’m not sure there’s a movie in that true story” based-on-a-true-story movies like Sully and Deepwater Horizon, especially in the wake of the Wikileaks film The Fifth Estate or the exceptional documentary Citizenfour. But Snowden has a secret weapon, and it’s one that I wasn’t expecting: a fully-engaged and on-his-game Oliver Stone. And when Oliver Stone is on his game and fully engaged, there are few filmmakers who are more interesting or provocative. I have been a fan of his work for most of the time I have been a film fan, even before I knew fully who he was. I was drawn to films he had written, and when he made the jump to directing full-time with the back-to-back accomplishment of Salvador and Platoon, »

Varsovia Films, the Buenos Aires-based outfit run by Argentine producer Diego Dubcovsky (“The Motorcycle Diaries,” “The Broken Embraces,” “Truman”) has boarded Carlos Ameglio’s project “Kiken,” which marks Uruguayan outfit Salado’s first foray into genre film production.

As a project, “Kiken” featured last year at both the San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum and Austin’s Fantastic Market. The entry of Mexican and German co-production partners in the project is currently under negotiations.

A first draft of the script has been penned by Salado founder Carlos Ameglio alongside Argentine film and TV writer Leonel D’Agostino (“Black Snow”).

Described as a visceral film, and conceived as a rollercoaster whose energy never wanes, “Kiken” follows a couple attempting to rekindle their relationship in a small fishing village, where a mysterious Japanese ship runs aground and releases a substance which mutates the hamlet’s inhabitants.

An evil cult carrying torches was closing in on Shelby (Sarah Paulson), who was attacked by a man that had the top of his head chopped off. But perhaps the creepiest scene was the one that was all too similar to an actual event that got filmed on a smartphone last year. Ed Helms and Owen Wilson Look for Their Father in ‘Bastards’ Trailer

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ed Helms and Owen Wilson think former NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw may be their father in the first trailer for Alcon Entertainment’s comedy “Bastards.”

Helms and Wilson play brothers whose mother Helen Baxter (portrayed Glenn Close) admits at her wedding that she stretched the truth about their father dying when they were young. “I’m not sure who your father was,” she adds.

The duo take off on a road trip to find their real father with evidence pointing to Bradshaw (playing himself) and J.K. Simmons. Ving Rhames, June Squibb and Katt Williams also star.

“Talk about a blast from the past,” Bradshaw responds. “She damn near cost us the Super Bowl.”

Rhames says of the name Helen Baxter, “It does more than ring a bell.”

The film is rated R for language and sexual references throughout.

Lawrence Sher, who shot the “Hangover” films, directs from a screenplay by Justin Malen. »

From 'Raw' to 'The Bad Batch,' the arthouse cannibal film is on the rise

5 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

As I reported earlier this week, "multiple" audience members passed out at the Toronto International Film Festival screening of Julia Ducournau's debut feature Raw, a film about a 16-year-old vegetarian who develops a sudden taste for human flesh following a gruesome hazing ritual at her new school. In addition to a number of allegedly disgusting scenes, the film is also, apparently, very good, with critics and general viewers alike singing the film's praises in print and on social media. With all the current hullabaloo around that film, it's interesting to note that another movie revolving around cannibalism, Ana Lily Amirpour’s The Bad Batch, also had its North American premiere at Tiff this week before being picked up for U.S. distribution by Screen Media Films. That film, billed as a "dystopian love story set in a Texas wasteland amongst a community of cannibals," is Amirpour's followup to 2014's »
