About Birtley

Birtley is situated to the south of Gateshead and has strong industrial links. Its well known Brick Works was near to the old station and brick-making was once the most popular trade in the area, followed closely by mining. The Birtley Iron Company had 10 pits in the area. Birtley is overlooked by Antony Gormley's famous Angel of the North.
