Can 'Blair Witch' Scare 'Sully' from the Weekend's Top Spot?

10 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Lionsgate's Blair Witch arrives seventeen years after the original film and it's hoping to become the third horror film to top the weekend box office this year. Standing in its way is last weekend's champ, Sully, which has delivered record results over the past few days and is looking at a $20+ million second weekend. Other new wide releases include Universal's Bridget Jones's Baby, arriving twelve years after the last film, and Open Road's Snowden. Meanwhile, Pure Flix debuts the documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise in over 800 theaters and Freestyle releases Mr. Church starring Eddie Murphy into approximately 300 theaters. Overall, while there could be a fight at the top with a couple of $20+ million weekends, this weekend's top twelve looks like it will be down from last year by about 10-11% with the top twelve generating around $89 million compared to $98.6 million over the same weekend last year. 2016 has already seen 11 films »

San Sebastian: Argentina’s Diego Dubcovsky Co-Produces Carlos Ameglio’s ‘Kiken’ (Exclusive)

29 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Varsovia Films, the Buenos Aires-based outfit run by Argentine producer Diego Dubcovsky (“The Motorcycle Diaries,” “The Broken Embraces,” “Truman”) has boarded Carlos Ameglio’s project “Kiken,” which marks Uruguayan outfit Salado’s first foray into genre film production.

As a project, “Kiken” featured last year at both the San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum and Austin’s Fantastic Market. The entry of Mexican and German co-production partners in the project is currently under negotiations.

A first draft of the script has been penned by Salado founder Carlos Ameglio alongside Argentine film and TV writer Leonel D’Agostino (“Black Snow”).

Described as a visceral film, and conceived as a rollercoaster whose energy never wanes, “Kiken” follows a couple attempting to rekindle their relationship in a small fishing village, where a mysterious Japanese ship runs aground and releases a substance which mutates the hamlet’s inhabitants.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is making a last-minute switch. Michael Giacchino has just been set to score the movie, replacing the previously announced Alexandre Desplat. The reason for the change? Blame those much-talked-about reshoots.  Last year, we heard that Desplat would be scoring Rogue One, making him the first composer besides John Williams to do a Star Wars […]

‘Gringo’ Review: John McAfee Doc is Both Testament and Antidote to Media Manipulation – Toronto

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

John McAfee isn’t fooling anyone. In a documentary profile filled with damning evidence, there’s something self-incriminating in McAfee’s “You probably read about me” response to being arrested by police, all caught on squad car dashcams.

It’s the opening scene of Nanette Burstein’s “Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee,” a detailed look at the trail left behind by a millionaire untethered from social and legal norms. From his time as progenitor of the once-ubiquitous McAfee antivirus software, through his business ventures overseas in Belize and his recent bid for the Libertarian presidential nomination, Burstein looks at the consequences of empowering an individual to trade on his name and not his abilities. In a media landscape that hasn’t fully realized how to cover business mogul presidential candidates, “Gringo” shows what it takes to truly examine the past of a volatile public figure.

Ed Helms and Owen Wilson Look for Their Father in ‘Bastards’ Trailer

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ed Helms and Owen Wilson think former NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw may be their father in the first trailer for Alcon Entertainment’s comedy “Bastards.”

Helms and Wilson play brothers whose mother Helen Baxter (portrayed Glenn Close) admits at her wedding that she stretched the truth about their father dying when they were young. “I’m not sure who your father was,” she adds.

The duo take off on a road trip to find their real father with evidence pointing to Bradshaw (playing himself) and J.K. Simmons. Ving Rhames, June Squibb and Katt Williams also star.

“Talk about a blast from the past,” Bradshaw responds. “She damn near cost us the Super Bowl.”

Rhames says of the name Helen Baxter, “It does more than ring a bell.”

The film is rated R for language and sexual references throughout.

Lawrence Sher, who shot the “Hangover” films, directs from a screenplay by Justin Malen. »

Composer Michael Giacchino Replaces Alexandre Desplat On ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Here’s a question that I think is worth some consideration: is “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” Disney and Lucasfilm‘s “Suicide Squad“? Let’s face it, both films have been through pretty much the same thing, but one has received (so far) a pass from too much scrutiny, thanks for a carefully orchestrated PR counter-attack. But none […]
