Spike Jonze on his new movie 'Her' -- Exclusive

11 August 2013 8:00 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

The first trailer for Spike Jonze’s new movie Her was released last week and generated a rush of positive buzz. The film is set in the near future and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, a lonely, soon-to-be-divorced writer who buys a new computer operating system named Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Samantha is so human and intuitive that Theodore begins to fall in love with “her.”

Prior to the release of the trailer, that description of the plot inspired a raft of Siri jokes, but the tone of the trailer is so full of longing and loss that those »

Yes, No, Maybe So: "Her"

9 August 2013 8:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Before we begin let us celebrate the coming of another Spike Jonze movie and one that has the prestigious closing night gala spot at the Nyff this year. Jonze has yet to make anything less than very memorable (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Where the Wild Things Are not to menion numerous iconic music videos).

Let us also bask in the saturated colorogy of Her's poster

Mmmmm never have I loved reds bleeding into pinks before... perhaps it's the hypnotic turquoise of Joaquin's eyes? They're like pools of inviting water thatinduce hypothermia once you've dove in. They're so hypnotic I didn't even notice the mustache and I hate face carpet unless it's evenly spaced about the room. (in other words: beards are fine)

But we are here for the trailer and our Yes No Maybe So verdicts (after the jump) »

Right up there as one of our most eagerly anticipated projects still to see the light of day this year, the endlessly creative Spike Jonze's latest offering Her (2013) had us hooked at its simple, yet irresistible premise. A man (played by the ever-watchable Joaquin Phoenix, no less) falls in love with his operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). With a first poster and trailer for Jonze's new effort now live on the web, we've been given a tantalising first glimpse of what the Being John Malkovich and Where the Wild Things Are director has in store for Us audiences this November (a UK release date is still to be confirmed). And whilst the tone may appear light and comedic, When Harry Met Siri this almost certainly won't be.

The official synopsis for Her, released online last year, states the following:

Arcade Fire to score Spike Jonze's new movie 'Her'

8 August 2013 9:50 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Just when we didn't think Spike Jonze's new film "Her" could be any more intriguing, it's been announced that the Arcade Fire will contribute to the movie's score.

The Arcade Fire's involvement was announced in the movie's trailer, which premiered yesterday. Interestingly enough, none of the band's music was included in the teaser, which instead opted for songs from bands like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Jonze's last feature film, "Where The Wild Things Are," famously used the Arcade Fire song "Wake Up" in its trailer, though that movie was scored by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O. Jonze also directed Arcade Fire's 2011 short film "Scenes From The Suburbs."

This isn't the only big news Arcade Fire has in 2013. The band will drop its next album, potentially called "Reflektor," on Oct. 29. "Her" hits theaters on Nov. 20. »

Her trailer shows Spike Jonze's latest take on modern love

8 August 2013 8:51 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Writer-director Spike Jonze sure likes his love stories to be complex, complicated affairs (please see: Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, even Where the Wild Things Are) where the meet-woo-fall-in-love trajectory gets interrupted by things like being inside someone else's body, being a character written in someone else'e story, or in the case of his upcoming film Her, being a disembodied program specifically designed to meet one's every need.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Theodore, a heartbroken divorced loner who buys a new program aimed at organizing his life and get paired with one named Sam, voiced by the honeyed pipes belonging to Scarlett Johansson after Samantha Morton's original voice work didn't pan out, and soon he finds himself at ease like never before, wishing that this fantasy girl were real.

Can you feel it in the air? That's the fall movie season coming your way, packed with interesting movies like "Her," the new film from Spike Jonze, who directed "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Adaptation."

"Her" tells the story of Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely man still damaged after a serious heartbreak, who develops a relationship with the disembodied voice of his new hyper-intelligent computer operating system (Scarlett Johansson).

As the two get to know each other, Theodore finds himself falling for someone that doesn't exist in the real world, and we wouldn't expect anything else from the wonderfully twisted mind of Jonze, who has seemingly once again presented an unusual story in an undeniably beautiful way.

The first trailer for "Her" gives you a good sense of what Jonze is going for here, and the performances look uniformly great. Are you excited for fall movie season yet? Because we sure are. »
