Newswire: R.I.P. Jon Polito, a favorite of the Coen brothers

3 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Jon Polito, the mustachioed, raspy-voiced character actor who squeezed both humor and surprising pathos from the many mobster and cop roles he played—most memorably for the Coen brothers—has died. The news was passed along by Polito’s friend, filmmaker John McNaughton, who directed Polito in the early episodes of Homicide: Life On The Street where Polito first earned attention as the pugnacious, philosophical Detective Steve Crosetti, as well as in the anthology series Masters Of Horror. No official cause of death has been given, though Polito was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer in 2010. Polito was 65.

Providing a comprehensive overview of Polito’s incredibly prolific, 35-year career would be an impossible task; his work stretched from off Broadway to Broadway to cop dramas to sitcoms to short films to arthouse indies to big-budget family films to cartoon voiceovers, encompassing more than 200 credits. Anyway, there is IMDb ...

Venice: Tom Ford, Jake Gyllenhaal Talk of Return and Reworking in ‘Nocturnal Animals’

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Venice, Italy — The last time Tom Ford came to the Lido, the director crossed overnight from the world of fashion into the awards-season big league with his acclaimed debut “A Single Man.” But instead of capitalizing quickly on his new kudos, Ford slipped out of the film world. He finally resurfaced Friday with his sophomore outing, “Nocturnal Animals.”

“I’m sorry it was seven years,” the director told a packed Venice press conference after its first two screenings. “It kills me that it was seven years!”

Based on the 1993 novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright, Ford’s new film tells the story of Susan (Amy Adams), a jaded art gallery owner trapped in a failing marriage whose life is changed when her estranged ex-husband, Edward, (Jake Gyllenhaal) mails her a copy of his debut novel (the “Nocturnal Animals” of the title). The book centers on a violent attack on »

10 Lessons We Learned From Summer Movie Season 2016

4 hours ago | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Take a deep breath and congratulate yourself: If you're reading this, that means we all survived the grisliest summer movie season in recent memory. We survived the Ghostbusters wars, the Suicide Squad wars, and the Warcraft wars. We even survived the movie where Kevin Spacey is a talking cat. We did it.

Flops aplenty, fans growing apoplectic over malarkey, and a saturation of sequels and remakes all made for a grueling few months — still, the Memorial-to-Labor Day gauntlet was not without its pleasures as well. As we prepare for »

‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Finds New Director in Trish Sie

23 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With Elizabeth Banks no longer on board to direct “Pitch Perfect 3,” Universal has acted quickly to find a new helmer for its next installment in one of its most popular franchises: Trish Sie.

Variety first reported earlier this year that Banks would not return to direct the third installment. Banks explained at the Produced By conference that her parental duties drove her decision to leave the director’s chair.

Banks tweeted her support for the new director on Thursday afternoon. “#PitchPerfect has a new leader – so excited @bigbadtrish is directing #PP3!”

The studio recently moved back the release to Dec. 22, 2017, in order to have time to find Banks’ replacement, but it looks as though production should stay on schedule as it’s closed a deal with Sie.

Why Train-Hopping Filmmaker Jeff Seal Is a Funnier and Fresher Casey Neistat

48 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

What do you get when you cross a clown with a filmmaker? The wholly original, whimsical films of Jeff Seal.

Take one look at his blown-up face on his tiny body in a train-hopping video he made for Gothamist and try not to laugh. With a Go Pro attached to an orange helmet, Seal hoists himself up onto the back of a freight train headed for Montauk, his friendly voiceover taking shots at the stupidity of it all.

“I’ve wanted to hop trains since I was a kid,” Seal told IndieWire by phone from Paris (“clown mecca”), where he was vacationing after performing a month-long run of his one-man show at the famed Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He shot the gorgeous train-hopping footage over the course of many years, but stopped short at using footage from his childhood. “My »

Venice Film Review: James Franco’s ‘In Dubious Battle’

49 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s easy to mock James Franco for the polymath showiness of all his extracurricular endeavors (actor! filmmaker! poet! collector of academic degrees! the world’s first and last postmodern Oscar host!). Yet if you leave the snark aside, there is something half-crazy/admirable about the scale of his ambitions. Besides, it’s no easy task to pull together a feature film, and Franco has directed close to a dozen of them. Up until now, he hasn’t been very good at it. Whether it’s a sexually “transgressive” (but actually cautious) documentary curio like “Interior. Leather Bar.” or one of his two (count ’em) Faulkner adaptations, Franco as a filmmaker has been more diligent than competent. At Cannes in 2013, as the audience sat dying through Franco’s “As I Lay Dying,” I tried to relieve the tedium by glancing to my left, and saw that half the people there were asleep. »

Summer Box Office: Feast or Famine as Blockbusters Either Hit Big or Flop Spectacularly

55 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The movie business played a high stakes game of poker nearly every weekend this summer. Sometimes, as in the case of “Finding Dory” or “Captain America: Civil War,” the bets paid off spectacularly. But not every hand was a winner, with the likes of “Ghostbusters,” “The Bfg” and “Ben-Hur” racking up tens of millions of dollars in losses and illustrating the dangers of playing the wrong cards. It’s all part of the price of navigating a globalized, tentpole-obsessed movie landscape.

“These big films have become an obsession with Hollywood,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Studios want to have their cake and eat it too. They want all the merchandising, video games, and spinoffs that can come with a hot property. It’s not just about box office. It’s about total pop culture domination.”

Reports of the movie business’ demise may be premature after the summer »

Kevin Smith’s latest twisted comedy “Yoga Hosers” is officially out in theaters and so far the film has been torn to pieces by critics. But that’s not stopping Smith from celebrating the release of his fantasy flick and embracing the horrible reviews.

Teaming up with Ralph Garman, who also stars in the film as Andronicus Arcane, Smith released a video on his YouTube page where they read bad reviews of his film.

“Despite all your best intentions and all the fun that was put into ‘Yoga Hosers,’ the critical reaction has not been, let’s say, good,” says Garman in the 52-minute clip.

‘Narcos’ Review: Season 2 Finds Its Path To the Future — And Its Real Star

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Here’s a theory: For any TV creators who get more than a season to prove themselves, it’s Season 2 where they really figure out what kind of show they’re making. And with “Narcos,” we see some pretty clear proof of that.

Season 1 of Netflix’s fact-based drama — about how cocaine created criminal empires in Colombia and beyond — was jam-packed with over 15 years of drug cartel history, and the result, unfortunately, was not consistently engaging for anyone other than the most passionate fans of the subject matter. But from the first moments of Season 2, the Netflix series shows new focus. Thanks to a much narrower scope — the 18-month hunt for Pablo Escobar, following his escape from La Catedral prison — characters are allowed to breathe more. The power struggles have real weight. And the potential for seasons to come becomes clear.
