‘Pitch Perfect 3’ Finds New Director in Trish Sie

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With Elizabeth Banks no longer on board to direct “Pitch Perfect 3,” Universal has acted quickly to find a new helmer for its next installment in one of its most popular franchises: Trish Sie.

Variety first reported earlier this year that Banks would not return to direct the third installment. Banks explained at the Produced By conference that her parental duties drove her decision to leave the director’s chair.

Banks tweeted her support for the new director on Thursday afternoon. “#PitchPerfect has a new leader – so excited @bigbadtrish is directing #PP3!”

The studio recently moved back the release to Dec. 22, 2017, in order to have time to find Banks’ replacement, but it looks as though production should stay on schedule as it’s closed a deal with Sie.

Sony’s “Peter Rabbit” adaptation will shoot in Sydney, Australia, with James Corden and Rose Byrne providing key casting. The move was confirmed following an injection of regional government finance from New South Wales’ ‘Made in NSW’ fund.

Announcement of the location and the funding was made Thursday by Troy Grant, NSW's deputy premier and minister for the arts. “This production, secured for NSW through the governments new A$20 million Made in NSW fund, will create jobs for 55 local actors and more than 600 crew, and will showcase our state to the world,” Grant said in a statement reposted by Animal Logic  Entertainment on its website.

Icon Productions acquires 'The Crossroad'

3 minutes ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Productions announced on Thursday they have acquired Mark Donaldson’s novel.

The Crossroad recounts Donaldson’s life story, from troubled teenager to an elite soldier in Afghanistan who became the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross since 1969.

Donaldson’s split-second decision under heavy fire in 2008 to save the life of an interpreter whom he barely knew changed the course of both men’s lives and enabled him to defeat his own demons.

These are busy times for Gibson, whose Hacksaw Ridge gets its world premiere out of competition in Venice.

Days later, Voltage Pictures will launch sales in Toronto on long-gestating Oed project The Professor And The Madman, which will star Gibson, Sean Penn and new addition Natalie Dormer. »

World Renowned Chef Tackles Hunger in ‘Theater of Life’ Trailer (Exclusive)

38 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

What if food waste could feed the hungry?

That’s the question posed in the new trailer for “Theater of Life,” exclusive to Variety.

The documentary follows chef Massimo Bottura, whose Osteria Francescana was named world’s best restaurant in 2016 and featured on Netflix’s “Chef’s Table,” as he embarks on an ambitious project. But instead of elites and gourmands, he’s serving refugees, recovering drug addicts, former sex workers, the homeless and the hungry.

Bottura created the soup kitchen featured in the doc, dubbed the Refettorio Ambrosiano, during Expo Milano 2015. Hundreds of pounds of uneaten food from the expo were saved from the waste bins, and a rotating lineup of 60 top international chefs, including Mario Batali, Ferran Adria and Alain Ducasse, crafted gourmet meals nightly from the scraps.

The title, “Theater of Life,” comes from the name of the venue — an abandoned theater in the working class neighborhood of Greco in Milan. »

Mark Ruffalo has defended Matt Bomer’s casting as a transgender sex worker in the feature film “Anything,” following criticism by the transgender community.

Ruffalo is an executive producer on the recently wrapped project, in which Bomer portrays a transgender woman. Bomer and Ruffalo played lovers in HBO’s 2014 drama “The Normal Heart.”

“To the Trans community. I hear you,” he wrote on Wednesday. “It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It’s time.”

“In all honestly I suggested Matt for the role after the profound experience I had with him while making ‘The Normal Heart,'” he added.

Mel Gibson Reveals Details of a Possible ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel

53 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Mel Gibson has revealed new details about the possible “Passion of the Christ” sequel.

Gibson said during an interview with pastor Greg Laurie at the SoCal Harvest in Anaheim, Calif., last weekend that he’s interested in a second installment to “The Passion of the Christ,” which would focus solely on Christ’s resurrection.

“We’re talking about that,” he said. “Of course that’s a huge undertaking. It’s not ‘The Passion 2’ — its called ‘The Resurrection.'”

Gibson went on to say, “That’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at, because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it. I mean, we can all read what happened, but in order to really experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s gonna take some doing.”

Though the film and Gibson himself received backlash from numerous social justice groups, »

‘Everything Wrong With Batman: The Killing Joke’ Says Animated Film Is More ‘Sex & The City’ Than Joker Storyline

By now you’ve probably heard of the R-rated DC Comics animated film “Batman: The Killing Joke.” This week’s Honest Trailer claimed that the “joke was on us” with this wannabe edgy misfire, and now Cinema Sins is here to count the plentiful mistakes committed by the wacky film.

Counting down the “sins” in 13 minutes or less, the first violation comes at the beginning of the film when Batgirl says, “First of all, this is probably not how you thought the story would start.” CinemaSins’ response to that is, “You mean with narration? That’s most movies these days, I think.”

The 9th Life of Louis Drax review – weirdly watchable thriller

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Horror film-maker Alexandre Aja turns in a tonally odd supernatural thriller which hits its stride when creepy stuff starts to happen

Actor and screenwriter Max Minghella has adapted Liz Jensen’s 2004 novel for the cinema; horror specialist Alexandre Aja directs, and the result is a supernatural mystery thriller, slightly overcooked and tonally odd – and uncertain if its juvenile lead is supposed to be cute or sinister. But it is watchable and even intriguing in its weird way.

Canadian star Sarah Gadon is in full Hitchcock-blonde mode as Natalie Drax, the mother of a strange, accident-prone boy called Louis (Aiden Longworth). Poor Louis tumbles from a cliff, after a confrontation with his violent stepfather Peter (Aaron Paul) during a family picnic, but miraculously survives in a coma and comes under the care of Dr Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan), a specialist in sleepwalking and consciousness while in a vegetative state. Creepy stuff starts happening. »
