New films from Clint Eastwood (“Sully”), Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”), Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”) and Ben Younger (“Bleed for This”) are set to screen at this year’s Telluride Film Festival, commencing Friday, Sept. 2.

Sully,” premiering Friday night, marks the first Eastwood film to screen at the fest since 1990’s “White Hunter, Black Heart.” He received a tribute that year as well, and hasn’t been back since he was on hand for Meryl Streep’s tribute in 1998.

The film stars Tom Hanks as commercial pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who miraculously water-landed Us Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, when a flock of geese struck the aircraft and disabled both engines.

Elsewhere, hot off the 2014 Oscar-winning sensation “Whiplash,” Chazelle will transition his vibrant musical to Telluride from an opening night bow at the Venice Film Festival, where it drew raves, before heading to Toronto next week. Also playing the »

‘Everything Wrong With Batman: The Killing Joke’ Says Animated Film Is More ‘Sex & The City’ Than Joker Storyline

54 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

By now you’ve probably heard of the R-rated DC Comics animated film “Batman: The Killing Joke.” This week’s Honest Trailer claimed that the “joke was on us” with this wannabe edgy misfire, and now Cinema Sins is here to count the plentiful mistakes committed by the wacky film.

Counting down the “sins” in 13 minutes or less, the first violation comes at the beginning of the film when Batgirl says, “First of all, this is probably not how you thought the story would start.” CinemaSins’ response to that is, “You mean with narration? That’s most movies these days, I think.”

His follow-up might not have to wait so long: Amazon Studios has just acquired “The Lost City of Z,” says the Hollywood Reporter; the allure of releasing a movie set in the actual Amazon must have been too powerful.

‘Arrival’ Review: Amy Adams Steals Spotlight In Denis Villeneuve’s Deep-Thinking Alien Invasion Story

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Denis Villeneuve’s career can be rather neatly cleaved in two. From the mid-nineties through the 2000s, he directed formally daring Quebecois films that collected awards and acclaim as they travelled the art-house circuit. In 2010, he went Hollywood, and since then he’s been making technically impeccable thrillers that always impress but never astound. To that bifurcated filmography arrives “Arrival,” a film that, well, rather neatly fits the English language pattern. Which is to say, “Arrival” has a hell of a lot going for it, but never quite gets there.

Amy Adams stars as Dr. Louise Banks, a professor of linguistics and mother of a daughter gone too soon. Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer stress the centrality of both roles, opening with a striking sequence – think that elliptical Malick touch, spiking Villeneuve’s rigid tone – that follows, through Louise’s eyes, her daughter from birth through childhood to early death. »

The Forgotten: William A. Wellman's "Good-bye, My Lady" (1956)

3 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

The latter part of William "Wild Bill" Wellman's distinguished career is a little patchy, as much due to studio interference as anything else, but a fair bit of positive attention has focused on Track of the Cat (1954) a sweaty family melodrama about the hunt for a rapacious wildcat in the snowy wilds near Aspen, daringly filmed in color but with almost no actual color (the snow was crucial here). We've been looking at the wrong film. An almost exact opposite of Track of the Cat exists, one which trades that film's showy ambition for a quieter, but equally radical aesthetic. Where Robert Mitchum and his kin snarl at each other in Track of the Cat, in Good-bye, My Lady all is peaceful between old-timer Walter Brennan and his young nephew Brandon DeWilde (the kid from Shane). Where Track of the Cat uses a daring palette and widescreen compositions, Goodbye, My »

‘From the Land of the Moon’ Trailer: Marion Cotillard Fights for True Love In French Drama

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Ten years after screening “Charlie Says” at the Cannes Film Festival, director Nicole Garcia returned this year to the Croisette with her latest drama “From the Land of the Moon” (“Mal de pierres”).

Starring Marion Cotillard, the film is based on Milena Agus’ novel of the same name and follows a French woman in post-World War II Europe who’s torn between the man she’s meant to marry (Àlex Brendemühl) and a charming war veteran (Louis Garrel).

A new international trailer released by StudioCanal shows the free-spirited Gabrielle fighting for her passionate dream of finding true love — an act that is considered scandalous in her small town in the South of France. While the sneak peek has no English subtitles, Cotillard’s performance guides the trailer forward, bringing a level of suspense and heartbreak to the clip.
