How much does a Tech Prep course cost?

Tech Prep courses cost $25 per credit hour. Most courses are 3 credits so the total cost per course would be $75. Normally the per credit fee is about $168 per credit, making this total over $500 plus additional student fees. As you can see Tech Prep is quite a bargain.

Why are UAS courses 3, 4, or 6 credits?

In high school each semester long class is 1/2 a credit. In college a semester long class is awarded any number of credits depending on the amount of class and lab time it will take to complete the coursework. Most courses will be 3 credits.

Do I have to leave my high school campus?

No, you don't leave your campus. That's the beauty of the Tech Prep program. You are getting credit for what you're learning in high school. You're being taught by teachers you already know. Your friends may even be with you in the same class.

Are there any restrictions?

Tech Prep is open to everyone in 9th - 12th grade. Once you are registered for a Tech Prep course you can't drop or withdraw from the class.

Will the credit be the same as a class at UAS?

Yes. The college credit you earn with Tech Prep will appear on your college transcript exactly the same as if you took the class directly at UAS. These credits will follow you for the rest of your life. Providing a college transcript with your job application will be a huge bonus for you. Tech Prep is a great way to start building a strong college transcript.

What is the maximum amount of credits I can earn?

There is no limit on the amount of credit you can earn. UAS places a semester limit of 7 credits on your high school account but there is no reason for this not to raised if you are doing well in your coursework. All it takes is a phone call from your high school principal or guidance counselor.

Why am I able to get college credit for these classes?

UAS can give you college credit for your coursework because your high school teachers have done a lot of work designing a course that will teach the same material as the courses at UAS. The Tech Prep Coordinator at UAS works throughout the year with your high school teachers, principal, and superintendent in order to provide these classes.

Can I get credit for a class I took last year?

Unfortunately no. You must register for the class during the same semester the class is taken.

Will the credit transfer to other colleges?

Where college credit is concerned, there is never a guarantee that credits will transfer from one college to another. Your Tech Prep course work will always be accepted at UAS. Upon entering UAS toward a degree program or certificate program you won't have to duplicate course work. We provide a smooth transition between high school and college.

How can I get a copy of my transcript?

You can view your unofficial transcript at any time at UAOnline using your Student ID #. If you need an official transcript view your unofficial transcript first to make certain everything is correct. If everything looks correct, order your official transcript at UAOnline. This will include coursework from all UA schools.

Accounting I

Covers the fundamentals of accounting using a service business to illustrate the analysis of business transactions, journalizing, posting and preparation of trial balances and financial statements. Adjusting entries, closing procedures and payroll are introduced.

Accounting II

Continuation of fundamental accounting principles. Covers accounting for receivables, uncollectible accounts, inventories, fixed assets, and intangible assets. Accounting for partnerships and an overview of corporate stock transactions are covered. Provides an introduction to cash flow statements and ratio analysis.

Automotive - Introduction to Automotive

Introduction to all components on an automobile. Includes career information for the automotive industry, shop safety, hand tools, fasteners, and basic automotive service.

Automotive - Basic Electrical Systems

Covers history and origins of electrical theory through the generation of electricity. Includes diagnosis, minor repair, and general service of alternators, starters, and batteries.

Automotive - Engine Performance I

General engine diagnosis and engine-related service.

Automotive - Auto Electrical II

Theory, diagnosis, and repair of automotive electrical systems, to include testing tools, schematics, and computers.

Automotive - Auto Engine Repair

Diagnosis and repair skills essential to overhaul and reconditioning of automotive internal combustion engines. Includes cylinder head, valve train, and engine block assembly service.

Automotive -Brake Systems

Theory, diagnosis, and repair of automotive brake systems.

Computers - Computer Literacy

Introduces computer literacy based on national IC3 standards. Topics include computer concepts, file management, basic editing and formatting functions in common software applications, basic troubleshooting for computer hardware and software, current electronic communication tools, Internet research strategies, network terminology and components.

Computers - Word Processing Concepts and Applications

Part A is fundamental word processing concepts and hands-on practice with a current word processing application. Students use basic word processing tools to create a variety of professional documents. Part B covers intermediate features such as styles, outlines, tables, merging, linking, embedding, and table of contents; and advanced features such as templates, on-screen forms and fields, document management, and macros. Course prepares student to take the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist Certification) expert exam for MS Word.

Computers - Using Spreadsheets in the Workplace

Introduces the use of electronic spreadsheet software for reporting and analyzing information. Covers creating, designing, and modifying spreadsheets, simple formulas and charts.

Computers - Using Databases in the Workplace

Learn to use a database from the perspective of the data entry operator. Course covers table creation and the basic data types, form creation using wizards, elementary querying, filtering, and basic report generation.

Construction - Woodworking I

Introduction to woodworking and woodworking machines; project construction and general finishing procedures.

Construction - Woodworking II

Special methods in wood construction and wood finishing, emphasizing furniture and precision woodcraft.

Construction - Basic Construction Techniques

Overview of construction hand and power tool usage, building procedures and codes, job and site planning, layout, foundation, floor, wall, and roof framing methods, utilizing current construction practices.

Construction - Introduction to AutoCAD

An introduction to Computer Aided Design and Drafting using the industrial standard AutoCAD software. Includes the basics of computer hardware and software, computer skills required for creating and editing drawings.

Diesel - Introduction to Heavy Duty Mechanics

This introductory course gives the student a look into the world of heavy duty mechanics. Students rebuild a diesel engine, operate heavy equipment, and take field trips to local shops. This course is limited to high school aged students.

Education - Introduction to Education

This course serves as a general introduction to careers in P-12 education in Alaska and the nation. Topics include: motivations for becoming an educator; personal learning styles; values, beliefs, and ethics as they relate to teaching; human development and developmentally appropriate practice; educational careers and professional organizations; teacher certification requirements; diversity issues; historical perspectives; laws and policies governing education at the local, state, and federal levels; rural and urban schooling; school curricula; and effective teaching.

Fisheries - Fundamentals of Fisheries Oceanography

An overview of the ocean environment with emphasis on processes that support fisheries productivity. Introduces fundamental concepts and principles of oceanography including major geological, chemical, physical and processes that occur in the world's oceans. Concepts will be presented in light of the interrelatedness of these disciplines and how they shape marine productivity. Human uses of fisheries and current issues in oceanography will be addressed.

Fisheries - Fin Fish Culture I

The first course of a two semester sequence which introduces students to the principles, concepts and methods used in the production of Pacific Salmon with an emphasis on modern fish culture techniques used by Alaskan producers. The course will cover all aspects of fry and smolt production. Topics include water quality, brood stock management, egg collection and incubation, egg and live fish transport, fresh and saltwater rearing techniques, feeding practices, growth, record keeping and fish health management.

Fisheries - Fin Fish Culture II

The second course of a two semester sequence which introduces students to the principles, concepts and methods used in the production of Pacific salmon with an emphasis on modern fish culture techniques used by Alaska producers. Methods used to enhance and rehabilitate the five species of Pacific salmon harvested in the commercial, sport and subsistence fisheries of Alaska and Northwestern United States will be covered in detail. Provides students with understanding of regulations and guidelines established by the state of Alaska to administer salmon enhancement programs through private non-profit aquaculture association.

Health Science - Introduction to Health Science

Provides a description of health care professions and the interdisciplinary team, job responsibilities, educational and licensing requirements, employment trends, and salary ranges for health related careers. Students will have an exposure to the history and development of health care in Alaska and the United States. Health care issues will be examined with an emphasis on ethics and cultural diversity. The principles of critical thinking will be introduced and communication skills will be promoted through collaborative discussion, presentation, and projects.

Health Science - CPR/First Aid

Basic CPR techniques and First Aid for controlling bleeding, shock, seizures, obstructed airway/choking, hot and cold-related emergencies, and diabetic crisis. Signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attack are reviewed, as is use of A.E.D. Safety and prevention practices are discussed. The course meets certification requirements for child care providers, outdoor guides, lifeguards, home health aides, group homes, and certified nurse aides. Course materials are derived from American Safety and Health Institute and American Heart Association guidelines.

Health Science - Certified Nurse Aide Training

Trains students in basic skills needed to assist nurses and to be efficient health care team members. Successful students qualify to sit for the Alaska State Nurse Aide certification exam. Minimum 75 lecture hours and 80 lab/practicum hours.

Health Science - Mariners First Aid

Training to provide basic assessment of and care for persons with medical emergency in marine settings. Particular focus is on rescue, burns, resuscitation, hypothermia, and trauma as well as on hazards and precautions common to fishing industry. Discusses conventional marine emergency response systems. including Coast Guard medevac. Techniques are presented for lifting and moving the sick and injured.

Health Science - ETT - Emergency Trauma Tech - 1st Responder

Designed specifically for Alaskan conditions and needs, addressing environmental problems such as hypothermia as well as first aid. Prepares students to deal with emergencies: ensure scene safety, provide patient care and transport, document incident. For non-medical workers in construction, logging, mining, law enforcement, ski patrol and other occupations where emergency care may be needed.

Health Science - EMT - Emergency Medical Technician I

Training to provide assessment of and basic care for persons with medical emergency in pre-hospital settings. Conditions include acute trauma, pulmonary arrest, wounds, cardiac arrest, shock, fractures, and childbirth. Techniques are presented for lifting and moving the sick and injured. Course provides for State of Alaska EMS requirement of 120 contact hours minimum.

Health Science - Medical Terminology

An introduction to root forms, prefixes and suffixes and medical abbreviations. Focus is on terminology of body systems related to symptomatology, diseases and treatment.

Justice - Introduction to Law Enforcement

Survey of the structure and process of criminal justice agencies. Includes an introduction of criminal law, police, courts, corrections and criminology. Introduces students to the history of the criminal justice system in the United States and traces the origins and historical foundation of the present day systems and associated agencies, with a focus on law enforcement in our society. Also introduces students to various political theories of justice and principles of causation as it relates to criminal behavior.

Justice - Criminal Justice

Course covers physical evidence and crime scene investigation, drug identification and case procedures, arson, sex crimes, fingerprinting, and investigation practices.

Marine Technology - Skiff Operator

Learn to safely operate a skiff in Alaskan waters. The course covers navigating, trip planning, line and vessel handling including one practice session using a skiff in the water. Rain gear may be required.

Marine Technology - Outboard Motor Maintenance

An introduction to outboard systems that need maintenance and upkeep for efficient operation. Ignition, carburetion power head and lower unit systems will be studied emphasizing preventive maintenance.

Marine Technology - Outboard and Small Engine Repair

Outboard and small engine repair theory, diagnosis service and repair of outboard and other small gasoline engines.

Mining - Introduction to Mining

Discover occupations in the mining industry and learn their potential as career paths in both positive and negative aspects. Learn safety awareness and why safety programs are so important, identify where entry level mining jobs are in Alaska, know what further training is needed for these career choices, find out what traits and skills employers expect, be able to compare underground and surface mining occupations, understand the educational requirements of mining occupations, learn the planning and logistical requirements of remote site mine operations, understand the importance and use of metals in our daily lives, discover how mining companies protect the environment and comply with environmental regulations.

Elementary Tlingit I

An introduction to basic Tlingit grammatical structures and vocabulary with an emphasis on the development of listening and speaking skills.

Elementary Tlingit II

A continuation of AKL 105 Elementary Tlingit I. Focuses on grammatical structures and vocabulary building with an emphasis on the development of listening and speaking skills.

Intermediate Tlingit I

An intermediate level continuation of AKL 105/106 sequence with further emphasis on development of language skills (listening, comprehension, reading, writing, speaking) and an added focus on the orthography and tone system, as well as vocabulary building and cultural elements.

Intermediate Tlingit II

A continuation of AKL 205 with further development of grammatical skills, vocabulary, orthography, tonality and cultural elements unique to Tlingit.

Welding - Basic Welding

A beginning level course covering the fundamentals of oxyacetylene welding, brazing and cutting, and electric arc welding. Emphasis in flat and horizontal welding positions on mild steel using a variety of welding rods and techniques.
