What is Tech Prep?

Tech Prep Student Video

Tech Prep is a convenient and cost efficient pathway of study offered by UAS to high school students throughout southeast Alaska.

  1. Courses are approved by UAS, taught to high school students, by high school teachers at your local school.
  2. Courses are approved by  the UAS system and taught by distance learning through Alaska's Learning Network.
  3. High school students receive college credit for a class taken in high school, while at the same time earning high school credit.

Why can I get college credit for the course?

  • The curriculum for a Tech Prep course taught at your high school has been approved by UAS. It is the same as a course taught on the UAS campus.
  • The instructor at your high school has been approved by UAS to teach the course.
  • The course must be approved by UAS every year to make certain it meets the current standards.

Why participate in Tech Prep?

  • You will earn college credit and high school credit for the same course.
  • Classes are only $25 per credit.
  • Any student in 9th - 12th grade can participate.

Advantages of Tech Prep

  • Offers a pathway for high-skilled, high-wage, and high-demand careers.
  • Offers skills and training to include on resumes and job applications.
  • Offers a pathway to a college program.
  • Offers an avenue to build a strong college transcript.
  • Opens access and college credits for courses that local high schools can't otherwise offer.
  • Provides a rigorous and relevant academic foundation based on industry standards.

When students fully participate in the Tech Prep program they have the opportunity to graduate from high school with industry certificates or licenses and further their education with occupational endorsements, certificates, and degrees at the University of Alaska.

TP LogoHow much does a Tech Prep course cost?

Tech Prep courses cost $25 per credit hour. Most courses are 3 credits so the total cost per course would be $75. Normally the per credit fee is about $168 per credit, making this total over $500 plus additional student fees. As you can see Tech Prep is quite a bargain.

TP LogoWhy are UAS courses 3, 4, or 6 credits?

In high school each semester long class is 1/2 a credit. In college a semester long class is awarded any number of credits depending on the amount of class and lab time it will take to complete the coursework. Most courses will be 3 credits.

TP LogoDo I have to leave my high school campus?

No, you don't leave your campus. That's the beauty of the Tech Prep program. You are getting credit for what you're learning in high school. You're being taught by teachers you already know. Your friends may even be with you in the same class.

TP LogoAre there any restrictions?

Tech Prep is open to everyone in 9th - 12th grade. Once you are registered for a Tech Prep course you can't drop or withdraw from the class.

TP LogoWill the credit be the same as a class at UAS?

Yes. The college credit you earn with Tech Prep will appear on your college transcript exactly the same as if you took the class directly at UAS. These credits will follow you for the rest of your life. Providing a college transcript with your job application will be a huge bonus for you. Tech Prep is a great way to start building a strong college transcript.

TP LogoWhat is the maximum amount of credits I can earn?

There is no limit on the amount of credit you can earn. UAS places a semester limit of 7 credits on your high school account but there is no reason for this not to raised if you are doing well in your coursework. All it takes is a phone call from your high school principal or guidance counselor.

TP LogoWhy am I able to get college credit for these classes?

UAS can give you college credit for your coursework because your high school teachers have done a lot of work designing a course that will teach the same material as the courses at UAS. The Tech Prep Coordinator at UAS works throughout the year with your high school teachers, principal, and superintendent in order to provide these classes.

TP LogoCan I get credit for a class I took last year?

Unfortunately no. You must register for the class during the same semester the class is taken.

TP LogoWill the credit transfer to other colleges?

Where college credit is concerned, there is never a guarantee that credits will transfer from one college to another. Your Tech Prep course work will always be accepted at UAS. Upon entering UAS toward a degree program or certificate program you won't have to duplicate course work. We provide a smooth transition between high school and college.

TP LogoHow can I get a copy of my transcript?

You can view your unofficial transcript at any time at UAOnline using your Student ID #. If you need an official transcript view your unofficial transcript first to make certain everything is correct. If everything looks correct, order your official transcript at UAOnline. This will include coursework from all UA schools.

For College?

In order to best measure your skills in mathematics and language most colleges will require you to complete a placement test prior to enrollment. At the University of Alaska Southeast this will be the ACCUPLACER that is published by the College Board.

It's important for you to study for this test as it will determine the first level of math and English courses you'll be placed into upon entering UAS. Studying typical questions will help you to understand not only the question format but also the type of material covered on the test. Before you take the actual test it will be important to practice so you can score as high as possible.

ACCUPLACER Sample Questions for Students

You can get more help by visiting our UAS Learning Center. Here you will find links for addition sample questions and information about taking the actual test.
