Power Technology Occupational Endorsement
with an emphasis in Marine Engine Room Preparation

This Occupational Endorsement is for students wanting to begin a career on large vessels working in the engine room as an USCG documented OILER.

OILER is the "qualified" entry level position in the engine room.  Program completers may find employment with the state ferry system, private ferries, cruise ships, seafood processors, tug boats, or any other large sea going vessel.

NOTE: There is also an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program for OILERS if you are interested in a degree from UAS.

The University has partnered with the Alaska Marine Highway System, Inland Boatman's Union to create this career training opportunity.

Program Information

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the time you do the internship on board the AMHS ferry.
  • Must pass a physically fit for sea duty test.
  • Must pass a federal background security screening.
  • Must get at least a C+ in all the required courses.
  • There is a required 6 month internship on a state ferry (non-paid.)
  • The USCG written oiler exam has to be passed after the internship.
  • This program does NOT award sea time for completing the courses and is not USCG approved.

Occupational endorsements are programs of study designed to give students intensive training in a specific occupational field.

Typically an occupational endorsement is less than 30 credits, and is not an eligible program for financial aid.
