How a Bruce Willis flop helped make Driving Miss Daisy a hit

Why Driving Miss Daisy might just owe a drop of its success to a film called In Country...

Sometimes, it’s little quirks of fate that turn projects from small successes into a genuine phenomenon. Here's one we thought you might be interested in. Bruce Beresford’s 1989 comedy-drama, Driving Miss Daisy, would go on to be a big hit, inspire a stage production, and win four Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture. Yet originally, Warner Bros didn’t have major plans for the movie.

Instead, it was pinning hopes for a good Christmas on the Norman Jewison-directed drama In Country, starring Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd. The studio set a September 29th 1989 release date for the film, expecting it to play for several months as awards season took hold. These were days when a movie would get a bit more time to earn its keep, »

Director Mick Jackson on Denial, Donald Trump, directing films, and how he followed The Bodyguard...

Mick Jackson has lived through several chapters of his directorial career. His background was television, in particular the stunning Threads, and his classy adaptation of Chris MullinsA Very British Coup. Then he went to Hollywood, directing the likes of L.A. Story, The Bodyguard and Volcano.

He’s been away from cinema for a while, courtesy of some intriguing television projects. But he returns to the big screen this weekend with Denial, a classy courtroom drama that brings the story of Holocaust denier David Irving’s infamous libel action to the cinema. We snagged a chat with him ahead of its release, with the promise of further conversation about his 90s output at a later date too.

Can you talk us through this particular film, and why you wanted to bring it to the big screen? »

David Stratton on his "very personal" 'Stories of Australian Cinema'

17 January 2017 4:00 PM, PST | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

David Stratton's Stories of Australian Cinema is set to premiere on the ABC this year over three episodes. Before that broadcast (the date of which is still under wraps) a theatrical cut will be distributed by Transmission.

Produced for the ABC by Stranger than Fiction's Jo-Anne McGowan (Art+Soul) with support from Screen Australia, Screen Nsw, Adelaide Film Festival and Transmission, Stratton describes the project as "very personal".

"It.s not a history of Australian film at all. It.s called David Stratton.s Stories of Australian Cinema, and it's really just that. Without wanting to sound too pretentious about it, it.s sort of my journey coming to Australia from England, running the Sydney Film Festival for eighteen years, fighting censorship, [and] being at the Sydney Film Festival just as the Australian New Wave was happening with the Peter Weirs and the Gillian Armstrongs and the Fred Schepisis. »

Sociopsychological Drama with Central Gay Character, French Film Icon Top Nsfc Choices

2016 movies Things to Come (pictured) and Elle have earned French cinema icon Isabelle Huppert her – surprisingly – first National Society of Film Critics Best Actress Award. 2016 Movies: Isabelle Huppert & 'Moonlight' among National Society of Film Critics' top picks Earlier today (Jan. 7), the National Society of Film Critics announced their top 2016 movies and performances. Somewhat surprisingly, this year's Nsfc list – which generally contains more offbeat entries than those of other U.S.-based critics groups – is quite similar to their counterparts', most of which came out last December. No, that doesn't mean the National Society of Film Critics has opted for the crowd-pleasing route. Instead, this awards season U.S. critics have not infrequently gone for even less mainstream entries than usual. Examples, among either the Nsfc winners or runners-up, include Isabelle Huppert in Elle, Moonlight, Toni Erdmann, Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, and Lily Gladstone in Certain Women.
