5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Josh Hartnett is in advanced negotiations to re-team with writer-director Guy Moshe (“Bunraku”) for “The Last Draw of Jack of Hearts,” which is billed as a neo-noir espionage thriller.

Disrupting Influence’s Glenn Kendrick Ackermann and Jason Piette have acquired worldwide sales rights to the film. They will introduce it to buyers at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Producer Mark Holdom announced Friday that “Jack of Hearts” will initiate principal photography in March in Naples and Lithuania.

It turns on Jack, the leading member of a mercenary outfit who is shot in the back and left for dead. He returns to his former Naples base for revenge, and to re-unite with the woman he loves. But events soon take a violent turn.

“I have spent some wonderful years living in Italy and always dreamed about coming back to do another film there,” Holdom said at the Venice Festival.

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Chicago-based Music Box Films has picked up all U.S. and Canadian rights to François Ozon’s “Frantz,” which is competing at the Venice Film Festival before playing at Telluride and Toronto.

Inspired by Ernst Lubitsch’s lesser-known film “Broken Lullaby,” “Frantz,” which opens in the aftermath of Germany’s Wwi defeat, follows Anna (Paula Beer), who’s still mourning her fiancé Frantz, who was killed the year before in a battle in France. A tale of guilt and forgiveness, the film centers on Anna’s unexpected relationship with a mysterious Frenchman (Pierre Niney) who claims to have been Frantz’s friend from before the war.

Sold by Paris-based Films Distribution, “Frantz” was produced by Mandarin Films, the producer of Ozon’s films since “Potiche,” which was also released in the U.S. by Music Box.

Why Train-Hopping Filmmaker Jeff Seal Is a Funnier and Fresher Casey Neistat

58 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

What do you get when you cross a clown with a filmmaker? The wholly original, whimsical films of Jeff Seal.

Take one look at his blown-up face on his tiny body in a train-hopping video he made for Gothamist and try not to laugh. With a Go Pro attached to an orange helmet, Seal hoists himself up onto the back of a freight train headed for Montauk, his friendly voiceover taking shots at the stupidity of it all.

“I’ve wanted to hop trains since I was a kid,” Seal told IndieWire by phone from Paris (“clown mecca”), where he was vacationing after performing a month-long run of his one-man show at the famed Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He shot the gorgeous train-hopping footage over the course of many years, but stopped short at using footage from his childhood. “My »

Kevin Smith’s latest twisted comedy “Yoga Hosers” is officially out in theaters and so far the film has been torn to pieces by critics. But that’s not stopping Smith from celebrating the release of his fantasy flick and embracing the horrible reviews.

‘Narcos’ Review: Season 2 Finds Its Path To the Future — And Its Real Star

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Here’s a theory: For any TV creators who get more than a season to prove themselves, it’s Season 2 where they really figure out what kind of show they’re making. And with “Narcos,” we see some pretty clear proof of that.

Season 1 of Netflix’s fact-based drama — about how cocaine created criminal empires in Colombia and beyond — was jam-packed with over 15 years of drug cartel history, and the result, unfortunately, was not consistently engaging for anyone other than the most passionate fans of the subject matter. But from the first moments of Season 2, the Netflix series shows new focus. Thanks to a much narrower scope — the 18-month hunt for Pablo Escobar, following his escape from La Catedral prison — characters are allowed to breathe more. The power struggles have real weight. And the potential for seasons to come becomes clear.

Kanye West’s ‘Fade’ Video Director Details Influences: John Carpenter, Grace Jones & Pornhub

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The director of Kanye West’s latest music video for “Fade,” Eli Russel Linnetz, is just 24 years old, but he’s no stranger to the work of artists who made their mark on society long before he was born. Linnetz recently told The New York Times about his inspirations for the video, which features actress and singer Teyana Taylor in a steamy shower scene with her real life husband and Cleveland Cavalier Iman Shumpert.

“‘Flashdance’ is just so iconic that it’s hard to move away from that, but the Ohio Players’ album covers were our starting point,” Linnetz told the Times. “Some people picked up on the Grace Jones boxing images by Jean-Paul Goude. I pulled a lot of references from ’70s and ’80s porn, just on Pornhub. That was less about the imagery and more about the texture of the skin, the oiliness. There’s John Carpenter films, »

How Lucy Walker Is Using Vr To Write Herself Into The Film History Books

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

By her own assertion, Lucy Walker has directed the most Vr films of any director. While IndieWire could not confirm that claim, as Walker’s infectious passion for Vr attests: Someday the history books may.

Her impressive roster of documentaries have earned her two Oscar nominations: One for her feature, “Waste Land,” and one for a short, “The Tsunami and The Cherry Blossom.” She recently wrapped the followup to Wim Wenders’ “Buena Vista Social Club,” out this year. Filming “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios” sparked an interest in Cuban music and dance, which led Walker to make “A History of Cuban Dance,” a lively Vr short chronicling Cuban history through its many dance styles. The feature will also have an accompanying Vr film.

Walker is also currently a creator with Chris Milk’s Vr company, Within (formerly Vrse), a prolific production house making some of the most narratively compelling virtual reality films out there. »

‘Atlanta’ Review: Donald Glover’s First Series Is Already Essential Viewing

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Atlanta,” it’s safe to say, is unlike anything you’ve seen on television. Imagine “The Wire” without the high-stakes cat-and-mouse game, “Girls” without the satire or even “Louie” without the extended vignettes.

Perhaps, then, you’ll have a general grasp on the unique pacing, characteristics and self-examination on-hand throughout the first four episodes of Donald Glover’s first foray into creating his own show. Of the two distinct issues nagging this honest attempt to recreate what it’s like to be black in modern America, it’s the slow clip at which Earn (Glover), Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) and Darius (Keith Stanfield) go about life that could alienate viewers. But it’s the lack of well-rounded female characters that needs to be rectified, even if it feels like the issue isn’t exactly being ignored.
