The Buzz: As animation studio LAIKA enters its second decade, they take a stylistic turn into ancient Japan and emerge with their strongest critical reviews to date. A strong guarantee to broaden their storytelling appeal worldwide, we're hopeful for a strong U.S. showing for what also serves as Matthew McConaughey's first voice role.
Ben-Hur (2016)- Adventure | Drama
The epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, an officer in the Roman army. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption.
Director:Timur Bekmambetov |

The Buzz: Thinking back to William Wyler's 1959 epic, a remake in and of itself, we remember how dramatic the production was and how influential the film became upon its release, from its score to, of course, the iconic chariot race sequence. This modern day remake, helmed by visually minded director Timur Bekmambetov, finds Jack Huston in the title role (IMDb tip: his first-ever credit was in a production of Spartacus) and Toby Kebbell playing Messala, Judah Ben-Hur's friend whose betrayal places JB-H in slavery. What looks to be the ultimate topic of discussion, however, is the likelihood of the movie being a total worldwide bomb.
War Dogs (2016)- Comedy | Drama | War
Based on the true story of two young men, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America's allies in Afghanistan.
Director:Todd Phillips |

The Buzz: If the news is making you depressed and you prefer your summer doses of reality to be filtered through the lens of comedy, you might be a candidate for Todd Phillips' true-story tale about two unlikely war profiteers (Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) that pulls back the curtain on the War on Terror. It's worth watching just to see how they pull it off. - Melissa
Morris from America (2016) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama | Romance
The romantic and coming-of-age misadventures of a 13-year-old American living in Germany.
Director:Chad Hartigan |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Writer-director Chad Hartigan's spin on the coming-of-age story had me rooting for American 13-year-old Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas), who forges his way through life with his widowed father as an outsider living in homogenous Germany. This film has a killer original soundtrack and a delightfully unanticipated turn by Craig Robinson in his first major dramatic role on the big screen. - Chako
Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World (2016) - [Limited]- Documentary
Werner Herzog's exploration of the Internet and the connected world.
Director:Werner Herzog |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Any opportunity to get lost in a Werner Herzog world is welcome, even if means ultimately falling off the grid this time around (or taking a baby step and, say, deleting Instagram and Snapchat from your phone for a while). - Arno
Imperium (2016) - [Limited]- Crime | Drama | Thriller
Idealistic FBI agent Nate Foster goes undercover to take down a radical white supremacy terrorist group. The up-and-coming analyst must confront the challenge of sticking to a new identity while maintaining his real principles as he navigates the dangerous underworld of white supremacy.
Director:Daniel Ragussis |
|

The Buzz: There's more talk about whether Daniel Radcliffe would ever head to the West End for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" than his latest movie, which finds him deep undercover in neo-Nazi territory. The thriller is based on the real-life tales of FBI agent Michael German.
Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (2016) - [Limited]- Animation | Adventure | Drama | Fantasy | Sci-Fi
King Regis, who oversees the land of Lucis, commands his army of soldiers to protect the kingdom from the Niflheim empire's plans to steal the sacred crystal which gives Lucis its magic and power.
Director:Takeshi Nozue |

The Buzz: With a few more months to go before the video game Final Fantasy XV is released, this movie, which is based on the game's setting and story, arrives to whet gamer appetites and potentially lure some new fans with its "GoT" casting plays.
Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer (2015) - [Limited]- Biography | Drama | Thriller
The story of the man who brought high-ranking German Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann to justice.
Director:Lars Kraume |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Director Lars Kraume's documentary won six LOLA Awards (Germany's equivalent of the Oscars).
A Tale of Love and Darkness (2015) - [Limited]- Biography | Drama
The story of his youth, set against the backdrop of the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. The film details the young man's relationship with his mother and his beginnings as a writer, while looking at what happens when the stories we tell, become the stories we live.
Director:Natalie Portman |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It seems like Natalie Portman didn't initially plan to write, direct, and star in her passion project, an adaptation of a novel by Israeli author Amos Oz, but fate and circumstance intervened. That's another way of saying Portman found it easier to get the project financed after she agreed to star (she originally had an unnamed Israeli actress lined up for the lead role).
