‘Ben-Hur’ review: “An unjust, empty husk”

Ben-Hur review: Timur Bekmambetov adapts Lew Wallace’s novel – but can it match the 1959 masterpiece?

Ben-Hur review by Matthew Ceo, September 2016.

Ben-Hur review

How do you alienate an audience from wanting to see future historical dramas on the silver screen? By pointlessly remaking 50’s classics such as Ben-Hur (the film based on Lew Wallce’s 1880 novel).

What sounds like a bitter jab at cinematic revisionism is actually an accurate reflection on how unnecessary the newest in a slew of remakes is. Timur Bekmambetov‘s reiteration of the Wyler remake, or the ’25 original (or source novel) is an unintentional insult. From the outset, what we see is an amateurish effort of a film, one that takes an original tale and bleeds it dry. I’d say that what’s most upsetting about Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur is that it disappoints in almost every aspect of it’s production – making it seem like an incredibly well-funded direct-to-video title. »

Anthropoid review

So far this week we’ve brought you our glowing review of Sean Ellis’ WWII epic Anthropoid, and also an interview with the gifted filmmaker himself. Today we can bring you a new interview with the two stars of the film, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan.

Anthropoid is based on the extraordinary true story of the World War II operation to assassinate SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich.  Heydrich was the Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, and the main architect behind the Final Solution and the leader of the occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia.  Nicknamed “The Butcher of Prague,” his reign of terror and brutal crackdown prompted Allied authorities in London to hatch a top-secret mission, codenamed Operation Anthropoid, which would change history.

The film follows two soldiers from the Czech army-in-exile, Josef Gabcík (Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Dornan), who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in »

Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers in ‘Stranger Things

If you’re out there in the modern streaming world, love the best of the 80’s movies, and still haven’t stepped inside the wonderfully mysterious world of Stranger Things on Netflix then here’s a great featurette celebrating the best of Winona Ryder and another reason to get watching… now.

We devoured all of Stranger Things on the first-weekend-launch and have been happily, probably too intently, spreading the world ever since. This look into Winona’s character Joyce Byers interviews the ace actor herself plus features interviews with the excellent David Harbour (Chief Hopper), director/producer Shawn Levy and creators The Duffer Brothers. It’s been one of my favourite things for a long time and we look forward to its second season now it has been confirmed by Netflix for 2017.

Riz Ahmed as Naz in ‘The Night Of

Let’s not stand on ceremony, The Night Of opening episode is a brooding, inquisitive and intense setup to an 8-episode HBO series that instantaneously picks up the ‘must-see’ sign and hammers it firmly into the ground beneath your feet. Showing now on Sky Atlantic in the UK, your first insight has more happening than some whole series’ manage to offer and yet you’ll leave the introductory gambit without a clue of what actually went down but definitely wanting to know more.

To offer up a quick taster, without spoiling the meal, it stars the excellent Riz Ahmed as Naz Khan, a typically sensible young man living in Queens with his family. On a night like any other, he »

How to survive the zombie apocalypse – according to the ‘Ibiza Undead’ team

5 September 2016 9:00 PM, PDT

Ibiza Undead premiered at last week’s Horror Channel Frightfest. Directed by Andy Edwards, the film sees a lads holiday abroad spoiled by an unruly mass of zombies. We caught up with Andy the afternoon of the premiere to talk all about the project. When we met him Andy described himself as being ‘tired and emotional’, the tired part coming from partying with Alex Zane and Emily Booth, the emotional part coming from seeing his feature debut premiere at the festival.

He wasn’t all by himself though, he was joined by his three leading men – Homer TodiwalaEd Kear and Jordan Coulson. We chatted all things zombies, including how best to survive an attack, and realised that Todiwala, Kear and Coulson are exactly their on-screen personas. The quartet definitely gave a verbal work-out, be warned the following interview contains traces of banter.

‘Anthropoid’ review: “Some of the most thrilling moments in cinema this year.”

5 September 2016 8:30 PM, PDT

Anthropoid review: A thrilling and powerful war film that doesn’t shy away from difficult themes such as the repercussions of heroics.

Anthropoid review by Luke Ryan Baldock.

Anthropoid review

Sean Ellis arrived 10 years ago with the wonderful little film Cashback, a feature based on his own award winning short which was both smart and original. Anthropoid, his fourth feature, couldn’t be further from his humble beginnings, yet clearly shows a man with a firm grip on all things cinematic. Telling the true tale of World War II’s most important assassination, it is also a fresh look at events that is neither too afraid to question morality and heroism in war, nor too quaint to make some of its sequences, for lack of a better word, entertaining.

Set in 1942, we follow two parachutists who return to Czechoslovakia after the controversial Munich Agreement, who have orders to assassinate Hitler »

Must watch trailer for Oasis documentary ‘Supersonic’

5 September 2016 3:10 PM, PDT

You’d be hard pushed to find a band who’ve had a bigger impact when they arrived on the music than Oasis in the last 20 years and their story is one we’ve always known bits about but now, it seems, we get to explore inside all the brilliant madness with Supersonic.

This new trailer brings all the excitement and atmosphere that the band created in such a short space of time and I can’t wait for it –

How the Music Industry has Lost its Magic

5 September 2016 8:58 AM, PDT

If you’re hypersensitive about the modern music industry and like to argue that Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus are actually creating art and not just nonsense that makes them millions; and how that any song released before the year 2000 is too old to even bother with and can’t possibly be any good, then you are going to want to look away now. I’m not going to argue that all music after 2000 is bad, because that would make me as stupid as the people whom I just mentioned. There has been some incredible music and artists since 2000; however the industry itself has simply lost its magic, which it only really had during the 60s and 70s.

This is what they call an opinion piece, so feel free to have wildly different opinions to me on this matter.
