Suicide Squad tops domestic box office for third consecutive weekend

Suicide Squad has continued its impressive run at the North American box office, topping the chart for the third consecutive weekend – a feat that neither Man of Steel nor Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to accomplish.

Suicide Squad is expected to pull in around $20.7 million domestically over the Friday-Sunday period, having brushed aside competition from Ben-Hur, which tanked in its opening weekend.

The DC supervillain ensemble has earned $262.2 million in the States, and its worldwide haul now sits at $572.6 million. That puts it ahead of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which earned $542.7 million earlier this year, and it has one major market left to open in, Japan, where it debuts on September 10th.

Next two Avengers movies will mark an end and a new beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Fresh from Captain America: Civil War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are presently hard at work developing Avengers: Infinity War and its now-untitled sequel, which will bring the curtain down on Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The two-part epic is set to serve as a culmination of everything we’ve been building towards from Marvel’s previous movies; however, during an interview with IGN, Anthony Russo has revealed that they are also being eyed as a new beginning:

“I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] since the very first Iron Man movie. In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.”

Movie Review – Lights Out (2016)

Lights Out, 2016.

Directed by David F. Sandberg.

Starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander Dipersia, Billy Burke, Alicia Vela Bailey, and Maria Bello.

Synopsis:

When her little brother, Martin, experiences the same events that once tested her sanity, Rebecca works to unlock the truth behind the terror, which brings her face to face with an entity that has an attachment to their mother, Sophie.

It’s a unique feat to make a film which you start to forget even as you’re still watching it. That’s been achieved by the latest jump-scare shocker Lights Out; a run of the mill horror that riffs on nearly every horror cliché there is.

Opening with a strong nightmarish sequence in a factory, the premise of Lights Out is intriguing and made for a terrifying short film from director David Sandberg. As a feature length film it is bloated and quite dull. Rebecca (Palmer »

Preview: WWE Summerslam – Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton, Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler, Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte and more

Right, I get that WWE are turning Summerslam into the WrestleMania of the summer and that’s great – but does this need to be a six-hour show? With the two hours of Nxt Takeover: Brooklyn II the night before, three hours of Raw and two hours of Smackdown – we’ve got fourteen hours of wrestling over four days. It’s a lot to take in!

But ignoring that, what do we have on the show? Well we’ve got Lesnar’s least interesting match since his return in 2013, a brand new title to make sure the WWE Championship is devalued and… other stuff. And no Sami Zayn. Guess there’s just no room on the card for The Underdog from the Underground.

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

This really is Lesnar’s least interesting match, and one that does nothing for either man. With Orton still being pushed as one »

Last month it was announced that Legendary Pictures had secured the big screen rights to Pokemon following a heated bidding war, announcing a live-action adaptation of the hit Japanese video game Detective Pikachu.

Well, it looks like Legendary has now found its screenwriters, with Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) in talks to pen the script for the film, which is expected to go into production next year.

This is another high profile gig for Perlman, who is currently penning Captain Marvel for Marvel Studios alongside Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), and is also working on the third Sherlock Holmes movie for director Guy Ritchie.

Pokemon has enjoyed a surge in popularity lately thanks to the huge success of the augmented reality game Pokemon Go.

Not one of these actors is actually a metahuman.

It’s about time we laid down some ground rules for comic book movie casting. Real truth time, y’all. Firstly Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall in Thor. Yeah, that’s right. A non-mythical, non-Norse actor was cast in mythical, Norse role. But that was early in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. They were still learning.

Elba reportedly can’t even see everything in the Universe at once.

Ray Donovan Season 4 Episode 7 Review – ‘Norman Saves The World’

Mark Clark reviews the seventh episode of Ray Donovan season 4…

Anyone worried that the Primm Casino cash going awol meant that former FBI honcho Cochrane was out of the plot picture can rest easy – Hank Azaria’s serio-comic creation is back, and laying down some tracks for his Ep. Well, everybody’s gotta have a dream you know.

Hector Campos’ dream is to get back his title, and he seems to think that Donovan’s Fite Club is the best place to start. His troubled sister Marisol getting kicked out of rehab may or may not prove to be a spanner in the works.

The Armenians’ dream is to get revenge for the slaughter of their brethren and compatriots, and now that Mickey’s confessed, all it takes is a wad of cash and the hired hitman hoodlum getting himself thrown in jail.

Why Liking Bad Films Means You’re Smarter Than Average

If you’re constantly getting abuse from your friends about your taste in films, Neil Calloway says help may be at hand from a recent study…

In what appears to be the cinematic equivalent of those studies that receive an inordinate amount of publicity when they trumpet the fact that gorging yourself on chocolate and red wine makes your healthier,“Enjoying trash films: Underlying features, viewing stances, and experiential response dimensions” from the Max Planck Society argues that more intelligent people enjoy bad films. Now you have an excuse for your collection of Uwe Boll and WWE movies; you watch them because you’re intelligent.

Of course, correlation does not mean causation (the more films Nicolas Cage appears in in a given year, the more people drown in swimming pools); watching Roger Corman and Troma Movies doesn’t make you smarter, it’s just more intelligent people are more like to enjoy trashier films. »
