The 10 Best Trailers of 2010

Cybernetics, Jedi and sheep highlight this year's best trailers.

As games steadily become more expensive to develop, large publishers are throwing more and more money into ensuring that the trailers promoting them get people talking. The usual suspects such as Blizzard and Bungie are on this year's list of best trailers; but as Catherine and Scott Pilgrim demonstrate, a lavish budget isn't everything. Sometimes all a trailer needs is to be unique.

Check out this year's best trailers below.

Deus Ex Human Revolution Director's Cut Trailer

It took more than three years for Eidos and Square to take the wraps off the newest Deus Ex game; but what they had to show didn't disappoint. What is arguably the most artistic trailer of the year begins with the main character streaking toward the sun in a reference to the story of Icarus before waking to light a cigarette with a conspiciously cybernetic arm. This trailer almost instantly made Human Revolution one of the most anticipated games of 2011.

StarCraft II Ghost of the Past Trailer

Blizzard has long been known for their excellent trailers, and they pulled out all the stops for Ghosts of the Past. Debuting a week before the formal release, it renders one of the most important moments of the original games in lovely CG. This one was aimed directly at StarCraft fans, and it was more than successful.

Scott Pilgrim E3 Trailer

The trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World showcases the two best parts of the downloadable tie-in game -- Paul Robertson's pixel art and Anamanaguchi's excellent chiptune track. The River City Ransom vibe that infuses the trailer certainly doesn't hurt either.

Star Wars: The Old Republic "Hope" Trailer

BioWare's lavish "The Old Republic" trailers have become something of an annual event, and this year they featured the Battle for Alderaan. It begins with a huge conventional battle, but it isn't long before the duel between a Jedi and a Sith takes center stage. In this case though, one of the grunts is actually able to do a little more than stand around and watch the lightsabers.

Call of Duty Black Ops Reveal Trailer

It's a stretch to say that the first Black Ops trailer saved Treyarch's latest Call of Duty at retailer; scandal or no scandal, it was going to sell millions. But it did provide a much needed shot in the arm after months of relentlessly bad PR. The quick cuts and shots of the SR-71 quickly shifted the angry rhetoric to grudging admissions that it would be a Day 1 purchase.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Story Trailer

While not as flashy as some, this trailer provides a good introduction for Cesare -- the resourceful villain of Assasin's Creed Brotherhood. It's understated but nevertheless highly effective direction does a great job of promoting one of the year's top games.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright Trailer

One of the most craziest mashups in gaming history begins the only way it could: with Professor Layton cross-examining a defendant, and Phoenix Wright shouting his trademark "objection!" And as this trailer was animated by the highly talented artists at Level-5, it's wonderful to look at as well.

Halo Reach "Deliver Hope" Trailer

Much like Hideo Kojima, it often seems as if all the crew over at Bungie really wants to do is make movies. Their trailers get more elaborate with each passing year, starting with the live action sequences in Halo ODST and continuing to the massive battle depicted here. Between the Reach and the Battle of Alderaan mentioned earlier, it's been a good year for huge sci-fi battles.

Portal 2 Robot Co-op Trailer

It was probably too much to hope that Portal 2 would make it out before the end of the year; but at least this trailer narrated by the now iconic GLaDOS gives us plenty to anticipate. As one commenter said after the trailer, "It's as if Short Circuit were made into a buddy game."

Catherine TGS 2010 Trailer

Atlus managed to get people talking with the trailer for Catherine, their bizarre-looking first foray into Xbox 360 and PS3 development. The trailer juxtaposes sheep, women and murder in a way that brings to mind such animated mindscrews as Paranoia Agent. Certainly a game worth keeping an eye on.

Dues Ex Trailer is amazing, I have been watching it atleast once a month since it came out, but oh wait..the game is going to be a fps so all the emotion displayed that pulls you into the story will probably only be experience during cutscenes in the game.

    Catherine.

I think it's a mix of me wanting to see a real Shin Megami Tensei title make the generational leap, and the fact that Catherine looks. . . boring, honestly.

The only that makes me want this game to come out, is that once it does, we may hear news on Persona 5

  • Damn good choices, 1up!

Deus Ex definitely owns it in my book! First time I saw it, I've been hooked on wanting to play it ever since (and I've never even played the series before). And the AC brotherhood one was bangin too (I love that that orchestra/hip-hop style the music in did) but I actually like the one that was like the second or third trailer where they show Ezio getting straight nasty w/ it and doing a curb stomp on some Roman guard, lol.

And as being a diehard Phoenix need I even say how bananas I went when I saw that trailer for Layton vs. Wright game (and I'm not even a Layton fan)! The Old Republic one was hellacool too and I don't even get down w/ SW game like that but that shit really was tight. Plus, (finally) seeing that Catherine trailer has made even more interest in wanting to play this game (kudos 1up to Paranoia Agent reference, that in itself sold me right there, lol)....man I really hope that localized for the West.

It's nice that trailers now days aren't so far removed from the games they represent. I remember when you'd watch a trailer that would get you super psyched for a game, only to play a game that looked so different from the trailer it was ridiculous!

It was incredible. Bioware is amazing with making these trailers for their Star Wars: The Old Republic title. Of all the best of 2010, it was easy for me to personally give it to this trailer. It was adrenaline pumping! It was badass!

That trailer was one of the most badass of all time... Should be on this list, w/o a doubt imo Also, I'd take the Street Fighter x Tekken teaser over the Black Ops reveal trailer. Overall a pretty awesome list!

It was cool, but everyone knew it was coming and they didn't even show any game play. Maybe that's why it didn't make the list.

    • I think...

...because it was a teaser and not a full length trailer.
