Following his upcoming World War II film Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson is set to turn his attention to the Australian military, with Variety reporting that he’s snapped up the rights to Mark Donaldson’s bestselling autobiography The Crossroad.

Here he worked his way towards his goal of joining Australia’s Special Air Service and his heroics in Afghanistan saw him becoming the first Australian since 1969 to be awarded the Victoria Cross. The book is described as “the journey of a flawed man who turned away from self-destruction to fight his own war and save the life of a man he barely knew.”

31 August 2016 3:55 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It was recently revealed that Passion of the Christ 2 is being worked on. Now, Gibson has himself confirmed the news and revealed that the sequel to the 2004 faith-based, R-rated blockbuster will be titled The Resurrection.

During the course of the interview, the subject of the sequel, which Mel Gibson has been fairly quiet about up to this point, did come up. Blood Father Review

29 August 2016 6:00 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Blood Father is yet another entry into the Aged-Action-Star-Still-Kicks-Ass subgenre (see the Taken franchise, Red movies, Expendables silliness), proving that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks – and you might not have to.

Mel Gibson grows out his best Grizzly Adams beard and talks with a throat full a gravel, going the “ex-con with a heart of gold” route to brutally enjoyable extremes. Torn from the pages of Peter Craig’s adapted novel is a bloody, thug-riddled story of one father’s love knowing no bounds; sweet in sentiments, and salty in its gritty retribution. It’s nothing tremendously inventive, but director Jean-François Richet still paints a vengeful portrait of California livin’ in the scumminess of society’s underbelly – and the things we’d do to ensure our loved ones escape.

Gibson stars as “Link,” a sober ex-criminal who spent most of his life drinking, fighting and all the other dirtiness in-between. »

New to Streaming: ‘De Palma,’ ‘Sunset Song,’ ‘Melancholia,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ and More

26 August 2016 9:10 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Blood Father (Jean-François Richet)

If this be the movie jail that Mel Gibson is destined to die in, it could be a whole lot worse. Blood Father, directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine, Assault on Precinct 13), works remarkably well as a grindhouse throwback, sporting a screenplay (from Peter Craig and Andrea Berloff, based on Craig’s novel) that’s better than it has any right to be. »

The Best Films of Summer 2016

24 August 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

“‘2016 is a bad year for film’ is just another way of saying ‘I really blew it when I chose what films to watch in 2016,'” producer Keith Calder recently said. Taking this statement to heart, as summer winds down, there’s no shortage of writing about how the season was a disappointment overall — but, on the contrary, there have been gems throughout the last four months, and we’ve set out to name our favorites.

All of the below films received at least one-week theatrical runs in the United States from May to August, and while some are still in theaters, many are now currently available to stream. Check out our favorites below and let us know what you most enjoyed this summer. One can also see our fall preview series, which just kicked off this week, here.

Kidnap: new trailer for Halle Berry's action thriller

24 August 2016 12:20 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ryan Lambie Aug 24, 2016

Halle Berry drives quickly in the new trailer for the action thriller, Kidnap...

We've seen plenty of Hollywood actors attempt to emulate Liam Neeson's success with the action thriller Taken, including Kevin Costner in 3 Days To Kill and Mel Gibson in this year's Blood Father. But how about Halle Berry as an otherwise normal parent whose life is thrown through a loop when her son goes missing in a busy playground? That's the nightmare scenario presented in Kidnap, the forthcoming thriller from Spanish director Luis Prieto (he previously brought us the Pusher remake).

Okay, so Kidnap doesn't quite have the neck-snappings and discharged guns of the Taken series, but it has plenty of car chases and, in true Neeson style, Berry gets her own, "You've messed with the wrong person" monologue to the bad guys. From what we can gather, the movie takes the form of »

Arthouse Audit: ‘Hell or High Water’ Makes Splash in Big Cities

14 August 2016 10:50 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After one of the best openings of the summer, Texas western “Hell or High Water” could become one of the strongest specialized releases of 2016. This bank robbery and pursuit thriller debuted at Cannes and scored among the best reviews of the year. CBS Films and Lionsgate opted to take the easier commercial route rather than chase awards via the standard September festival rollout.

Late summer has yielded a spate of arthouse successes including strong holdovers “Café  Society” and “Indignation.”

Opening

Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate) – Metacritic: 86; Festivals include: Cannes 2016

$592,000 in 32 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $18,500

A gamble paid off big-time for CBS Films, who acquired this independent Texas story of two struggling brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who rob a bank to save the family farm. Distributed by Lionsgate, “Hell or High Water” debuted well at Cannes. Knowing it had rave reviews, CBS decided to go broader than »

Movie Review: Mel Gibson attempts an action-comedy comeback in Blood Father

10 August 2016 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Would it be easier for Mel Gibson to make a comeback if every attempt wasn’t some kind of self-reflexive star text? There are Hollywood stars (and respected filmmakers) with worse misdeeds and uglier personal lives, but Gibson, the traditionalist Catholic fixated on torture, is hell-bent on suffering for his sins on screen. Five years after starring as a personally fractured family man in The Beaver, and after an assortment of high-profile projects that fell apart (including one about the Maccabees), he returns in Blood Father, a pulpy father-daughter action-comedy that plays like a mea culpa. Alcoholism, racism, anti-Semitism, men abusing women—just about anything Gibson has ever been documented doing or accused of is there, with the star on hand to acknowledge that it is in fact bad, as though asking for a reduced sentence in the court of public opinion. Having a reformed outlaw biker mutter, “Still backing »

[Review] Blood Father

John Link (Gibson) is a burned-out alcoholic who we meet in the middle of an AA meeting. He’s celebrating two years sober while still lamenting the bridges he’s burned and a daughter he hasn’t seen in some time. Only moments later, Link and his daughter, Lydia (Erin Moriarty), are reunited, a hail of gunfire and some bad men following them. “She’s every loser’s lucky day,” Link says of her, a drug addict who accidentally pulled the trigger on her criminal boyfriend, Jonah »
