Emmy Predictions 2016: Editing Contenders Raise the Narrative Bar for TV

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

While “Game of Thrones” achieved epic greatness with the ambitious “Battle of the Bastards,” “Better Call Saul” got even better in Season 2 with a looser and more experimental vibe. They’re squaring off for best drama series editing, with “Got” the likely winner.

Meanwhile, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” which captured the “Trial of the Century” as a telling precursor to current racial strife, has the edge over the trippy “Fargo” prequel in the limited series/movie editing race.

“The Battle of the Bastards” brings to a head the heated feud between Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and his army of Wildlings, and the Boltons, led by nemesis Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Director Miguel Sapochni used “Ran” as dramatic inspiration and the military strategy of Hannibal as reference with both armies trying to lure the other into the center and then attack from the sides.

Women at the Emmys: The Behind-the-Scenes Nominees We’re Rooting For

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.

While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”

But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.

Melanie Lynskey Is Always Willing to Wait for the Right Part (And It’s Paying Off) — Girl Talk

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.

Melanie Lynskey was just 16 when she first broke into Hollywood, thanks to a bold and bright turn opposite Kate Winslet in Peter Jackson’s fact-based “Heavenly Creatures.” Since then, she’s carved out a career that’s wholly her own, one that includes roles in tiny indies like “Hello I Must Be Going” and big studio films like “Sweet Home Alabama,” exceedingly popular television series like “Two and a Half Men” (when asked about the roles she’s recognized most for, Lynskey laughed and said, “At the airport, it’s ‘Two and Half Men'”) and critical darlings like “Togetherness” — and just about everything in between.

But one thing has held true from the start: Lynskey requires great material. She could scarcely ask for better than the kind she got in Clea DuVall’s directorial debut, “The Intervention. »

‘Ice Guardians’ Exclusive Trailer: Sports Doc Explores The History of The Enforcer In The NHL

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Many sports documentaries focus on the inspirational story of an individual or a team overcoming great odds to achieve greatness, but few examine one particular position on a team, especially one so misunderstood and controversial. The new documentary “Ice Guardians” journeys into the lives of those who perform undoubtedly the toughest job within the National Hockey League today: The enforcer, an unofficial role whose job it is to deter and respond to violent play by the opposition.

Few understand this position and even fewer appreciate what is involved in becoming one. Born out of self policing an inherently violent game, the role now faces the scrutiny of national newspapers, blogs, and TV news casts. Due to its violent nature, it has drawn opinions from both fans and critics alike. But what led to its spectacular rise? What purpose does it really serve? »

Mike Birbiglia’s ‘Thank God For Jokes’ (Likely) Headed To Netflix & 8 Other Ama Reveals

Occasioned by the recent release of “Don’t Think Twice,” Mike Birbiglia took to reddit for an Ama yesterday. The biggest reveal is that he’ll (hopefully) be filming a performance from his “Thank God for Jokes” tour for Netflix, though the comedian/actor/filmmaker had plenty else to say as well:

On the interplay between sadness and comedy: “I’m just trying to dig into the sadness and hopefully find some comedy so that hopefully you can too. I mean, that’s the goal. I’m doing my best.”

On people pronouncing his name wrong: “People keep telling me that local NPR ads for Don’T Think Twice keep saying ‘Mike Ber-Beehl-ia’s movie…’ etc. I think some names are never meant to be learned. Sincerely, Mike Birbigilbug”
