A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat.

The Buzz: M. L. Stedman finds her debut novel translated for the screen by Blue Valentine wirter/director Derek Cianfrance; her material in his hands makes for the type of romantic drama that could find art house types in the same theater as devotees of, say, Nicholas Sparks. Both Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz are being touted for potential Oscar nominations for their respective performances.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Mystery | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Metascore: 48/100 (33 reviews)
A corporate risk-management consultant must decide whether or not to terminate an artificially created humanoid being.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: One of the reasons this cast is stacked with serious supporting talent (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, among others) has to be due to director Luke Scott's longtime association with Ridley Scott and his production company. Morgan's trailers have been white-hot on the internet, and Fox is going with a conservative wide release, a sign that they might have a breakout/sleeper hit on their hands.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 35/100 (13 reviews)
Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.
Director:

The Buzz: By now you know what to expect from a Rob Zombie movie, though he always finds a way to up the nihilism factor with every new project. It's an approach that makes it increasingly challenging to get his vision out to a wide theatrical audience, but, as he done with his music, Zombie's true savvy is knowing how to get his goods directly in the hands of his cult audience.

Certificate R   -   Mystery | Thriller

Metascore: 41/100 (20 reviews)
A psychologist who begins working with a young boy who has suffered a near-fatal fall finds himself drawn into a mystery that tests the boundaries of fantasy and reality.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Though Louis Drax represents a genre shift for horror-minded director Alexandre Aja, the most interesting bit of trivia here is the fact that talented actor Max Minghella assumes his deceased father Anthony's mantle by earning his first credit as the screenwriter for this thriller.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

NO MANCHES FRIDA is the story of Zequi, a recently released bank robber who goes to recover stolen money buried by his ditzy accomplice before going to jail. They return to the site only to find that Frida Kahlo High has built a gymnasium over the loot. To get the money, he poses as a substitute teacher for a school that can't seem to keep any teachers around. Zequi comes in ready to lay down the law- but he quickly finds out that life on the inside may have been easier to deal with than a school full of wild and rebellious teenagers.
Director:

The Buzz: Omar Chaparro, a box-office hero in Mexico, looks to broaden his appeal in the U.S. with his latest comedy. Two of his most recent movies, Compadres and Pulling Strings have performed on par with noteworthy indie releases.

Certificate Unrated   -   Action | Crime | Drama | Thriller

A gripping action thriller about a college girl Akira, who has grown up with the ideals of being self reliant. Her life spirals out of control when she becomes unwittingly involved in a crime involving four corrupt police officers.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Akira could come to represent a turning point for Indian cinema, as Sonakshi Sinha gets the chance to play the kind of female character rarely seen by Indian audiences. Aside from offering up an action heroine, director A.R. Murugadoss boldly addresses the uptick in acid attacks on women in this story of a college student facing off against corrupt cops.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy | Fantasy | Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 23/100 (17 reviews)
Two teenage yoga enthusiasts team up with a legendary man-hunter to battle with an ancient evil presence that is threatening their major party plans.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Kevin Smith's second movie in his planned True North Trilogy is set in the same world as Tusk but its a completely different reality than the one that transformed poor Justin Long into a walrus. Though Tusk was wickedly funny, the body horror absolutely kept audiences at bay, so it will be interesting to see if a toned-down horror comedy that's centered on Eh-2-Zed clerks Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie will draw a bigger crowd than its predecessor.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 57/100 (7 reviews)
Frank and Casper's friendship is put to a test, when Casper decides to leave Denmark to pursue a solo career in Los Angeles. Determined to win his best friend back Frank chooses to follow Casper ensuring an eventful trip.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Cool to see Casper and Frank's new adventure make its way to U.S. theaters since the Danish duo has eked out a cult audience ever since their TV show found its way to these shores. Longtime fans should know that Mia, who is now married to Frank and a mother of two, is still in the picture though, sadly, to a lesser degree than ever before.

Certificate Unrated   -   Drama

Metascore: 65/100 (23 reviews)
Summer, New York City. A college girl falls hard for a guy she just met. After a night of partying goes wrong, she goes to wild extremes to get him back.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Audiences seem to be divided as to whether filmmaker Elizabeth Wood has created a work that effectively creates a conversation about youth culture, and we have to think that's exactly that reason the Sundance selection earned a theatrical deal.

Certificate Unrated   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 38/100 (17 reviews)
A jazz pianist makes a discovery days before the death of his wife that causes him to believe his sixty-five year marriage was a lie. He embarks on an exploration of his own past that brings him face to face with a menagerie of characters from a bygone era.
Director:

The Buzz: Jerry Lewis's return to the big screen arrives with his declaration that director Daniel Noah's script was the best thing he'd read in decades, and it seems that Lewis imbues Max with genuine bitterness and pain. The polite downside: Most reviewers say he's the only reason to consider giving the movie a look.

The story of Chesley Sullenberger, an American pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew.
Director:
Watch Trailer Get Tickets

The Buzz: 2016 is shaping up to be quite memorable for Tom Hanks; he withstood A Hologram for the King's shaky reviews and kept the focus on Inferno, his upcoming return to the sport coats of Robert Langdon, as well as his bonafide Oscar contending portrayal of Chesley Sullenberger for director Clint Eastwood. A rapturous response from the Venice Film Festival is an indication that the very American story could play well worldwide.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Horror | Mystery | Thriller

Metascore: 28/100 (9 reviews)
A surrogate mom for a couple becomes dangerously obsessed with the soon-to-be father.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Screen Gems has established itself as the Sony division that specializes in, among other things, the guilty pleasure revenge thriller. Jaz Sinclair gets a big-screen introduction as the nefarious entity whom we imagine will be dispatched by a righteous Regina Hall. This is our kind of date movie.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 31/100 (7 reviews)
A mother and her young son release unimaginable horrors from the attic of their rural dream home.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Kate Beckinsale stars in a haunted house thriller that feels familiar in many ways -- there's a marriage in trouble, a questionable decision to move into a dilapidated country estate, a ghost of a young girl ... Looks like it could be fun to watch Kate in paranormal architect mode as she uses the home's blueprints to unlock its mysteries, but it will be a miracle if the movie delivers at the box office since it's such a late arrival to the calendar. Disappointments is one of three movies being distributed by Relativity Media that have been subjected to the studio's executive shuffle and storied financial issues that have resulted in a temporarily unstable release plan.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family

Metascore: 36/100 (17 reviews)
A daring parrot recounts how Robinson Crusoe came to be stranded on a tropical island.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Disney and Universal pretty much own the animation game but that doesn't stop other studios from tossing a title or two into the mix to see how they perform. Most of the movies fail spectacularly; for every Nut Job there are a dozen bombs. Lionsgate, the studio behind this reimagining of Robinson Crusoe's adventures, has one of the worst track records of all the contenders looking to make inroads into the animated movie market, and there's little chance they will a reversal of fortune here.

Certificate R   -   Documentary

Metascore: 72/100 (23 reviews)
The story behind literary persona JT LeRoy, the fictional writer created by American author Laura Albert.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: In the late 1990s, JT LeRoy, a 20-year-old former runaway, impressed critics with his autobiographical novel about a boy who follows in his mother's footsteps by becoming a prostitute. Hailed for his authentic, streetwise literary voice, LeRoy soon had legions of fans who flocked to his public appearances. As this documentary reveals, LeRoy never existed. He was the nom de plume of an older woman who went to great lengths to conceal her identity. Was it literary fraud or just a pseudonym? This film plays like a thriller and will leave you questioning the nature of identity and why we care so much about "authenticity" in works of fiction. - Sara

Certificate Unrated   -   Drama

Metascore: 68/100 (23 reviews)
A struggling comedy writer, fresh off a breakup and in the midst of the worst year of his life, returns to Sacramento to care for his dying mother.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Messy, complicated, and sometimes uncomfortable family relationships are certainly nothing new. But this intriguing drama, which premiered to great acclaim at Sundance this past winter, seems to find new nooks and crannies to fill with both equal measures of gloom and laughter. TV veteran Jesse Plemons stars as David, a heavy-with-baggage son who moves home to tend to his terminally mother (Molly Shannon) and come to terms with his life. Critical responses for both acting performances have been notable, but the strongest buzz centers around 14-year-old J.J. Totah's brief but catching on-screen turns as the highly theatrical younger brother of one of David's friends. - Bret

Certificate R   -   Adventure

Metascore: 69/100 (14 reviews)
Brandon is a 15 year old whose dream is a pair of fresh Air Jordans. Soon after he gets his hands on them, they're stolen by a local hood, causing Brandon and his two friends to go on a dangerous mission through Oakland to retrieve them.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: At times, Justin Tipping's feature debut, which is set across the water from San Francisco in the East Bay, in environments that were last seen in Fruitvale Station, though Tipping and co-writer Joshua Beirne-Golden take an approach here that finds their narrative often shifting into a highly stylized fantasy world. Cast note: Christopher Jordan Wallace, the son of The Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans, co-stars.

Metascore: 86/100 (17 reviews)
Exposing her role behind the camera, Kirsten Johnson reaches into the vast trove of footage she has shot over decades around the world. What emerges is a visually bold memoir and a revelatory interrogation of the power of the camera.
Director:

The Buzz: Politically focused cinematographer Kirsten Johnson turns the camera inward for a praised documentary that exists to involve its audience, and I want to be a part of this crowd. - Arno

Bridget's focus on single life and her career is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch ... she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby's father.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: There's a tremendous amount of goodwill greeting Bridget Jones as she returns for her third, long-in-development outing, which reunites Renée Zellweger with director Sharon Maguire, who helmed the original movie. Patchy story ideas are smoothed over by Zellweger's warm on-screen presence, and we have to say that way that she's holding up against all the critiques of her appearance and her marriage to Kenny Chesney -- both subjects are omnipresent news topics of late -- makes us appreciate her return even more.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 47/100 (41 reviews)
After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Some 17 years after The Blair Witch Project first terrorized and delighted horror fans, a direct sequel is finally here - or at least one that the original co-creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez are fully behind (let's not even mention the sequel). This time around, director Adam Wingard has fashioned a tale for the millennial set, with just enough continuity - it appears from the trailer - with the original to keep even the most skeptical of sequel cynics satisfied. Does our protagonist James really think he's going to find out what happened to his sister in the haunted forests of Maryland? Perhaps. But it's just that sort of bravado-before-the-moment-of-reckoning that I can't wait to see gradually unfold and eventually crumble. Blair Witch, I'm ready for you. - Bret

Director:

The Buzz: After watching Laura Poitras' Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour, I was left with so many questions about Edward Snowden. Sure, there were a ton of articles written about him, but I was curious to know more about the life of Snowden before he decided to take on the government. Who better to tell that story than conspiracy theorist extraordinaire Oliver Stone? Sign me up! - Michelle

Certificate PG   -   Documentary | Family | Music

Metascore: 43/100 (6 reviews)
A documentary on the Australia-based band Hillsong and their rise to prominence as an international church.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This concert documentary was one of the titles that was gathering a tiny bit of dust on the shelves at its original distributor, Relativity Media, who has been going through an in-public restructuring under new chiefs Kevin Spacey and his longtime producing partner Dana Brunetti. Once rights to the doc reverted to its producers, they partnered with savvy indie studio PureFlix for what should be a successful tour of big screens.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Comedy | Drama

Everything changes for Eva when she receives a life insurance check accidentally made out for $5,000,000 instead of the expected $50.000. She and her best friend take the money and head out for the adventure of a lifetime.
Director:

The Buzz: Flying under the radar despite the more than welcome pairing of Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange, this road comedy is the kind of movie that has a chance of a healthy run thanks to good, old fashioned audience word-of-mouth. Who doesn't want to live out a fantasy set in Gran Canaria, Spain?

Director:

Director:

The Buzz: There's an undercurrent of potential ick running through this movie's trailer - one that finds Miss Lily Rabe potentially getting too close to her student, who is played by Timothy Chalame - but I understand the true tones of the movie are more concerned with illustrating the complexity of boundaries instead of just pushing them for shock value. - Arno

A compilation of found footage featuring music, interviews, and stories of The Beatles' 250 concerts from 1963 to 1966.
Director:

The Buzz: From Europe to the States and then back to the UK, we're looking forward to going back in time to see The Beatles when they were more of a united band and less of a foursome of incredibly talented musicians striving to get their individual viewpoints to the forefront of the world's #1 rock group.

A pair of mischievous high school kids create the illusion of a haunting on an unsuspecting neighbor. While keeping his every reaction under surveillance, they see much more than they bargained for.

A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: I have always loved movies about characters who are wronged and then go on to do amazingly positive things with their anger. Instead of seeking revenge, they seek to live well, empower others, and make the world a better place because they understand that is the greatest revenge. The Dressmaker seems like that kind of movie. Kate Winslet stars as a glamorous woman who uses the haute-couture skills she gained in the international fashion industry to transform the lives of women in her rural Australian community. Instead of tearing people down with her anger, she builds others up, and I can't wait to see how the full story goes. - Lance

Reeling from a terrifying assault, a 19 year-old enrolls into college with his brother and pledges the same fraternity. What happens there, in the name of "brotherhood," tests him and his loyalty to his brother in brutal ways.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Based on Brad Land's grim memoir of the same name, Goat chronicles one 19-year-old's difficult transition to college life, framed by a harsh fraternity initiation process that serves up a constant cocktail of violence, hazing, and harassment. Ben Schnetzer plays Brad, a young man who, still recovering from a traumatic incident, is compelled to join his older brother Brett (Nick Jonas) in Phi Sigma Mu. The decision sets in motion a series of events that seem to reel out of control. While Jonas received plenty of attention at Sundance, where the movie debuted, I'm looking forward to seeing Schnetzer's performance, which has been lauded widely. In an age where fraternities and sororities are increasingly seen as anachronistic, I'm eager to see how this film informs and complicates that discussion. - Bret

Danny Says is a documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields. Since 1966, Danny Fields has played a pivotal role in music and "culture" of the late 20th century: working for the Doors, Cream, Lou Reed, Nico, Judy Collins and managing groundbreaking artists like the Stooges, the MC5 and the Ramones. Danny Says follows Fields from Phi Beta Kappa whiz-kid, to Harvard Law dropout, to the Warhol Silver Factory, to Director of Publicity at Elektra Records, to "punk pioneer" and beyond. Danny's taste and opinion, once deemed defiant and radical, has turned out to have been prescient. Danny Says is a story of marginal turning mainstream, avant garde turning prophetic, as Fields looks to the next generation.
