'Suicide Squad' and 'Sausage Party' Look to Take Down Newcomers, 'Kubo', 'War Dogs' & 'Ben-Hur'

10 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Three new wide releases are hitting theaters this weekend with Focus Features' and Laika's stop-motion animated project Kubo and the Two Strings serving as the widest debut of the lot. Fellow openers include Warner Bros' War Dogs and Paramount's Ben-Hur, though none of this weekend's new releases are likely to find themselves atop the box office. The DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad is looking to threepeat as the weekend's #1 film while Sony's R-rated animated feature Sausage Party hopes to hold off Kubo for a second weekend in the runner-up position. Overall this weekend should be yet another improvement over the same weekend last year with the top twelve pulling in around $120 million altogether. Before we get to the weekend's new releases we'll begin with a couple of carryovers, starting with Suicide Squad, which, along with 19 other wide release films in 2016, dropped over 60% in its second weekend. Of those 20 films, »

‘Big Lebowski’ Spinoff ‘Going Places’ Already Shooting, with John Turturro Directing and Starring as The Jesus

17 August 2016 12:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Remember how John Turturro has been wanting to make a spinoff to “The Big Lebowski” centered around his character The Jesus for years now? Well, it turns out he’s already a few weeks into production on the project, which once carried the working title of “100 Minutes with Jesus” but is now known as “Going Places.” Birth.Movies.Death. first reported the news.

Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou and Susan Sarandon all feature in the film as well, with an off-color premise inspired by Bertrand Blier’s 1974 “Les valseuses.” Cannavale stars opposite Turturro as a fellow thief named Petey, with the two vying to give a woman (Tautou) her first orgasm; Sarandon completes the foursome as a criminal recently released from prison. That certainly sounds like something the Jesus would do, though Tautou might be a little old for him. »

‘Clue’ Remake From Hasbro Lands at Fox

17 August 2016 3:28 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox has come on board Hasbro Studios’ “Clue” movie, five years after the board game-based project was ditched at Universal.

Josh Feldman, the head of Hasbro’s TV and film division, is producing for Hasbro Studios. Daria Cercek is overseeing for Fox.

Hasbro launched development of a “Clue” movie in 2008 as part of a six-year partnership with Universal to produce at least four feature films based on branded properties: Clue, Monopoly, Candyland, Ouija, Battleship, Magic: The Gathering and Stretch Armstrong.

“Battleship” was a costly money-loser for the studio in 2012 while “Ouija” grossed $103 million on a $5 million budget and generated a sequel “Ouija: Origin of Evil” that’s due out Oct. 21. At the time that Universal dropped the “Clue” project, “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski was attached to direct and produce, but is no longer part of the project at Fox.

Hasbro’s seen its greatest success in Hollywood with “Ouija, »

Film Review: ‘Never’

18 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Never” may take place in the present, but its mopey low-fi indie character drama – set to earnest singer-songwriter tunes – feels as if it’s been transported from the early ’90s. Writer-director Brett Allen Smith’s quasi-romance meanders about with the same aimlessness as its characters, revealing nothing substantial about them, or twentysomething love and identity formation, as it details the budding bond between a straight man and a gay woman. Although the presence of Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda in a starring role may earn it some fleeting attention, its two-dimensional navel-gazing should doom its theatrical prospects to a few smaller-market screens.

Having previously made the second-tier festival rounds in 2014, the partly-Kickstarter-funded “Never” opens with a histrionic break-up phone call between Nikki (Zelda Williams) and her unseen girlfriend Rachel (Angela Sarafyan). Nikki’s wailing pleas and apologies are authentically pitiful, yet they do little to endear her to audiences. After this torturous intro conversation, »

Review: 'Kubo and the Two Strings' is a gorgeous and somber stop-motion fantasy

5 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

While I think all animation is a magic trick that remains just as impressive now as the first time I saw it as a child, there are certainly levels of difficulty, and stop-motion animation is a special kind of lunacy. I’ve visited enough stop-motion sets to be awed by the skill set it requires for someone to effectively bring a character to life using such a difficult and painstaking method. It is sincerely meant then as praise when I say that I can’t imagine the single-minded pursuit of vision it took to bring Kubo and the Two Strings to life, and Travis Knight is, indeed, a madman. Travis Knight is, like Megan Ellison, a rich kid doing something profoundly interesting with the position of privilege they found themselves in. Ellison has fascinating taste as a producer, and she’s become a sort of life raft for filmmakers who »

China’s Screenwriters Are Finally Ditching Outdated Software (Exclusive)

5 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

China could become the world’s largest movie market as soon as 2017, but many of its screenwriters are still using Microsoft Word to compose scripts. That is exactly why screenwriter and programmer Guy Goldstein decided to take his WriterDuet software to the Asian country. He saw their use of outdated and clunky software that isn’t even meant for screenwriting — not to mention the hockey-stick growth China’s movie scene has shown in recent years — as a huge opportunity. He also had a big advantage: the main piece of competing software, Final Draft, isn’t compatible with the local language. »
