‘Elle’ Director Paul Verhoeven’s 10 Tips For a Successful Career After Hollywood

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

These are challenging times for any filmmaker who doesn’t want to be told what to do. Chasing a slice of the Hollywood studio pie almost always brings compromise, and many foreign-born directors return to their home countries and assemble independent film and television projects.

That was the path of Dutch-born Paul Verhoeven, whose career began in his own language with “Soldier of Orange” and the Oscar-nominated “Turkish Delight.”  From there he forged an A-list career that included “Basic Instinct” (which played competition in Cannes) “RoboCop,” “Total Recall,” “Starship Troopers,” and, yes, “Showgirls.” His last Hollywood movie was “Hollow Man” with Kevin Bacon in 2000.

When Verhoeven could no longer find material that suited him, he went back to Holland. His 2006 Dutch World War II drama “Black Book” (Sony Pictures Classics) starred Carice Van Houten, before she joined “Game of Thrones,” and was shortlisted for the foreign Oscar.

The Crow remake moves from Relativity

4 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The saga of The Crow remake continues to roll on, with THR reporting that Davis Films, Highland Film Group and Electric Shadow have now acquired the rights to The Crow Reborn from Relativity Media.

The Crow Reborn has spent several years in development at Relativity, with numerous false starts, and was slated to go into production early in the new year, with Corin Hardy (The Hallow) directing and Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) starring in the lead role as Eric Draven. It’s unclear at this point whether both director and star remain attached, although Bloody Disgusting claims that Hardy is still on board and an official announcement will be made soon.

“I am thrilled to collaborate with this talented team and return the Crow franchise to its roots for a new generation of audiences to enjoy,” said Edward R. Pressman, who produced the original 1994 Brandon Lee film, and is attached to the remake. »

Amy Adams Lets Her Face Do the Acting in "Eyebrow Theater" With Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert and Amy Adams played a game of eyebrow theater on Thursday's The Late Show.

They took turns reading out the other person's internal monologue, as their partner acted it out using facial expressions.

Colbert had a great facial reaction to the prompt that everyone on Westworld is a robot, and possibly everybody on Game of Thrones is a robot as well.

Adams kept it subtle while pretending she didn't remember somebody's name and was more aggressively expressive for "The next person who tells me flammable and inflammable mean the same thing is going to find out if they »

Rip it up and start again: can shows like The Affair survive constant reinvention?

6 hours ago | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

To avoid running out of steam, TV makers are coming up with ways to recharge potentially stale storylines – but so much change can make it hard to keep up

It’s hard to keep the attention of TV viewers. If there’s not a dedicated fanbase built early on whose appetite is whetted between seasons, as there was with Game of Thrones for example, it can be difficult for shows to bring the audience back. The solution for some series has been to repeatedly reinvent themselves, offering a new entry point with each subsequent season. But does it work? Well, sometimes.

The Affair, which returns to Showtime on 20 November with its third season, cast off in 2014 with an intriguing premise: each episode showcased the same scenes from two viewpoints – one from married novelist Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and the other from struggling waitress Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson). As the inaugural season unfolded, »

Review: Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season on Blu-ray

16 November 2016 12:00 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Out today is the Blu-ray edition of Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season from HBO Home Entertainment.

We previously reviewed the Digital HD version of the season here but there are new elements to consider with the box set.

The vast majority of Digital HD releases do not come with the bonus features, extra, and Easter Eggs we have come to know and love about the disc format. As a result, the Digital HD version is a nice add-on for on-the-go viewing, but the complete immersive experience, the special features add interviews, behind-the-scenes information, commentary, and deleted scenes to enhance your appreciation of the material. This season set, though, does come with some, but all, the extras found on the Blu-ray box set.

This season was a mixed bag with incredibly strong storytelling undercutting its strength by not surprising us. No one, except readers of the novel, expected »
