CBS’ “Star Trek: Discovery” will feature a female lead, Variety has confirmed. Executive producer Bryan Fuller is expected to discuss the role Wednesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

CBS Television Studios, which is producing the series, is in the process of casting the role, which could potentially go to a woman of color. During a Q&A last month at Comic Con, Fuller spoke about Mae Jamison, the first African-American female astronaut and Nichelle Nichols, the lone African American and lone female cast member on the original “Star Trek” series, as inspirations for the characters on his show. “I think that ‘Star Trek’ is a show of firsts,” he said at the time.

‘Twin Peaks’ Revival: David Lynch Is ‘Deep in Editing’ for Early Half of 2017 Release

46 minutes ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Twin Peaks,” even in revival form, continues to be one of the most enigmatic series on TV, whenever it makes it to air.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, reporters expected to get some news, be it new footage, a release date, hell, even some damn good coffee or pie. Unfortunately, Showtime execs could only give crumbs about the state of production. “You can do a show like ‘Twin Peaks,’ where we don’t even know for sure how many episodes there will be,” Showtime President and CEO David Nevins half-joked, half-announced, as critics sobbed inside. A touted clip reel shown at TCA did not include any actual footage, only actors on set raving about how wonderful the show is.

Newswire: Jennifer Lynch to direct horror flick about a killer Halloween theme park

3 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Filmmaker Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Boxing Helena, Chained) appears to have spun a couple of work-for-hire TV episode jobs into a feature horror movie gig. The director, whose father is Twin Peaks creator David Lynch, has helmed just two episodes of AMC’s The Walking Dead, but those two episodes are undoubtedly among the most affecting and fear-inducing installments of the all-too-often disappointing series. Her work on the fifth season’s “Spend” and the sixth season’s “Jss” so impressed Twd producer Gale Anne Hurd that she decided to tap her for a Halloween-themed film she had in the works, according to Deadline.

“When I saw the level of passion and professionalism Jen brought to The Walking Dead when she directed for us, I knew I had found the right director to helm Hellfest,” Hurd explained. “Her vision for the film is not only compelling and character driven, but very, very »

‘The Flash’ and ‘Supergirl’ to Stage Musical Crossover In Addition to Four-Show Team-Up

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Flash” and “Supergirl” will channel their cast members’ real life superpowers — their singing talents — for two musical crossover episodes in the back half of the season, the executive producers revealed at The CW’s Television Critics Association summer press tour presentation on Thursday.

That crossover is not to be confused with the epic four-show crossover that will take place between “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” in November, executive producer Greg Berlanti noted. With stars Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist both alums of “Glee,” and a number of other cast members having done stints on Broadway, the musical episodes seemed like a no brainer for the producers, and will use “mostly pre-exisiting” songs, although Berlanti said the writers hope to pen at least one original song for each episode.

“When they’re not acting or flying or punching or exploding things, they’re singing,” Ali Adler said of Benoist and Gustin, having »

Meryl Streep Explains Why She Wanted to Sing So Badly in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’

27 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Meryl Streep has sung well in films like “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Postcards From the Edge,” “Into the Woods” and, I suppose, “Mamma Mia!” But her operatic warbling in Stephen Frears‘ “Florence Foster Jenkins” is something else entirely. Playing a real-life society grand dame who sang with enormous enthusiasm but only the vaguest acquaintance with things like pitch, timing and tone, Streep’s Florence is monumentally awful but awfully entertaining; as Jason Solomons wrote in a review for TheWrap, “it is very hard to sing that awfully on purpose, and her twinkling commitment to the part is, as ever, a thing. »

‘Hell or High Water’ Review: Jeff Bridges Pursues Chris Pine in Smart, Exciting Western

Righteous criminality and pokey humor make for disarming companions in “Hell or High Water,” a West Texas-set bank robbing adventure that offers the alternating acting pleasures of Chris Pine and Ben Foster playing outlaw brothers like second skins, and Jeff Bridges in master-class mode as the veteran Ranger on their trail. “Sicario” screenwriter Taylor Sheridan’s 21st century western — sort of a “Bonnie & Clyde”/”No Country for Old Men” hybrid, directed with a craftsman’s steady hand by David Mackenzie (“Starred Up”) — traffics in all the elements that have made the outlaw genre so enjoyable in the past, from bad. »

Rachel Weisz ruins a perfectly good birthday in 'Complete Unknown'

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. This movie is exactly what I imagine it's like for people who are in the middle of their lives and don't have kids. They have cocktail parties. They have spotless apartments. They have the time and inclination to fake their own death and start over again.  I don't plan on seeing this movie. Maybe I'm jealous that Michael Shannon's character has an amazing apartment. Seriously. I don't get why he'd ever consider moving with his new, young wife to California. Dump the wife before she dumps you and keep the apartment, Michael Shannon!  No one in this movie is going to give him this advice, especially not his birthday guests, who look like an icky combination of grad students and professors. But everything changes when his previously missing »

Showtime Chiefs Talk ‘Twin Peaks,’ ‘Penny Dreadful,’ Daniel Craig Drama and Digital Growth

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The advent of Showtime’s digital standalone offering last year has delivered a windfall of more than 1 million subscribers that promises to transform CBS Corp.’s pay TV service, according to Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins.

The subscriber growth has boosted revenue and bottom line numbers, allowing Showtime to invest more heavily in a broader range of programming, particularly documentaries, Nevins told reporters Thursday in his Q&A alongside Showtime programming president Gary Levine at the Television Critics Association press tour at the Beverly Hilton.

The alternative distribution model has meant that Showtime is “reaping the benefits of all the trends reshaping the television business,” Nevins said. He said that the Ott Showtime service has added more than 1 million new subscribers since its launch in October — new sign-ups that do not appear to be compromising its traditional subscriber base that flows through traditional Mvpd players.

“We’ve built a new business in the last year,” he »
