Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Announced for 3DS
New Resident Evil title recreates Mercenaries missions from RE 4 and 5 in 3D.
Along with all the other exciting Nintendo 3DS announcements to come out of Nintendo's big event last night, Capcom also revealed a new Resident Evil game for the handheld called Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Well, perhaps we should put "new" in quotation mark: As the name implies, the title is actually a collection of the "Mercenaries" bonus missions from Resident Evil 4 and 5, with a few new features thrown in as well.
If you somehow missed out on both Resident Evil 4 and 5, the Mercenaries mode featured bonus missions where players would attempt to kill as many enemies as they could in a specific location in a fixed amount of time. The Mercenaries 3D will feature the same set up, but the press release also promises "brand new modes and well known characters from the series to enrich and extend the Mercenaries experience." One such new feature is Wi-Fi Connectivity, allowing players to join together in co-op multiplayer over the Internet "regardless of location."
As for what characters to expect, the first screen shots (via digitalgames.fr) show Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar from RE5, although it wouldn't be surprising to eventually see RE4's Leon Kennedy in the game as well. There was no mention of when Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D would be released.

I understand...

developers may want to focus on harnessing a new technology completely, but that doesn't mean that re-hashes are okay. I guess I wouldn't mind playing this and I'm sure Capcom just wants to get the 3D right, but couldn't they put a little more effort into it?

Cool so far.

Still, they can't just throw in some levels, enemies, characters and modes in a commercial game. They should fill it to the brim with content. Not necessarily a story mode or something like that, but tons of levels and characters. Also, a level-editor or character-editor would kickass.
That's the only way I'd buy it.

So, is this a seperate game fom the Resident Evil they were showing off for the 3DS at E3? I thought that specific Resident Evil was story driven, given the trailer was all about creating conflict between well known characters. If they are two differrent games, why wouldn't Capcom just combine the two onto one cart?? It seems like a money grab to me to chop the game into two and sell it in two different pieces when all other versions of Resident Evil that included Mercenaries mode had it included with the single player game.

RE:Revelations will be so jam-packed with gameplay and gorgeous graphics that they couldn't include the Mercenaries aspect on the cartridge. That's a good reason that I'm sure many of us will be content with

Kinda was hoping

for an original game and story with this. I didn't enjoy mercenaries mode as much as the story mode in 4 and 5. Oh well. Regardless, it looks amazing in the video footage shown thus far.

This is something I actually wish they released on the Wii, with online co-op. This could be even cooler, although the Wii controls really were the best for this sort of thing. Here's hoping it controls well on a heldheld.

Yeah, it would have been great on the Wii

RE4 plays great on the Wii and a Mercenaries game would have been dope.
Still, I am glad they are putting out a version of the Mercs out there as a stand alone game. So long as it has all characters available from RE4-5 and half of the missions are originals, I'd be happy buying it.
But screw Capcom if it has less characters and is just a port of the levels already available on the console.
