6 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The Dardenne Brothers always write and direct their films at a steady clip, often releasing their films in three- or four-year intervals. Their latest film “The Unknown Girl,” about a doctor who sets out to find the identity of an unknown young woman who died after she was refused surgery, premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Now, Variety reports that Luc Dardenne says that the duo are set to make their next film, which will be about the rise of terrorism in Europe. “We are writing the script now, and hope to shoot it in Belgium by the fall of next year,” says the Dardenne brother.

‘Twin Peaks’ Revival: David Lynch Is ‘Deep in Editing’ for Early Half of 2017 Release

46 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Twin Peaks,” even in revival form, continues to be one of the most enigmatic series on TV, whenever it makes it to air.

At the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, reporters expected to get some news, be it new footage, a release date, hell, even some damn good coffee or pie. Unfortunately, Showtime execs could only give crumbs about the state of production. “You can do a show like ‘Twin Peaks,’ where we don’t even know for sure how many episodes there will be,” Showtime President and CEO David Nevins half-joked, half-announced, as critics sobbed inside. A touted clip reel shown at TCA did not include any actual footage, only actors on set raving about how wonderful the show is.

Tegan and Sara Team Up With ‘BoJack Horseman’ Illustrator For Mystical ‘Hang on to the Night’ Video

57 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Musical duo Tegan and Sara released the music video for their track “Hang on to the Night,” which might catch the eye of “Bojack Horseman” fans. The two rock some major similarities – especially since the star of the clip is an animated horse – and that’s because the clip was directed and illustrated by Lisa Hanawalt, production designer and producer for the Netflix comedy.

The singing-songwriting sisters reached out to Hanawalt and entrusted her with the creative direction for the video. “When [Lisa] sent me her drawings, I already felt very realized, as if she saw me,” Sara told Nylon. The song was a response to a number of sudden deaths in the sibling’s family and their anxiety about morality. The video explores, both literally and figuratively, the “regenerative” aspect of the night. “If you can manage to hang on, you can face another day,” Sara added.

‘Hell Or High Water’ Is A Coens-Esque Caper With Personality & Zest [Review]

Through the eyes of Englishman David Mackenzie, Texas is turned into a smoldering, dust-covered, Coens-esque environment, full of no-shit-taking colorful characters. The director’s follow-up to the gritty and ultra-raw jail flick “Starred Up” is much lighter on its feet, leaning on “Sicario” screenwriter Taylor Sheridan and his brimful of whip-smart hijinks that pepper the picture […]

‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ Revived at Nickelodeon as TV Movie

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Everyone’s favorite wallaby, talking cow and neurotic turtle are returning to TV.

Nickelodeon announced Thursday afternoon it has ordered a TV movie of “Rocko’s Modern Life,” the cartoon comedy which originally aired on the channel in the mid-’90s.

Rocko, Heffer and Filburt will all return to O-Town, though voice casting has yet to be confirmed for the revival.

“What I have found by bringing these characters back is that it’s not so much about nostalgia, but a sense that they still feel relevant and fresh to me, and after 20 years, they can’t wait to comment on modern life in the 21st century,” creator Joe Murray said in a statement. “They still have a lot to say.”

Nickelodeon already has two other major revivals in the works. “Legends of the Hidden Temple” will return this fall and a “Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie” is planned »

‘Author: The Jt LeRoy Story’ Exclusive Clip: A Literary Wunderkind Goes From It Boy To Imposter

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Many authors use a pseudonym to mask their real identity or to place distance between the text and themselves, but no one creates an entirely new identity with different experiences and actually send them out into the world. Well, that’s exactly what Laura Albert did. The 40-year-old San Francisco former phone-sex operator turned housewife created a literary persona named Jt Leroy, who took the world by storm with his “exploits” about his sordid childhood mired by prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy. The new documentary “Author: The Jt LeRoy Story” chronicles Albert’s creation from the height of LeRoy’s fame at fashion events and rock shows to the New York Times pulling the rug out from under the story. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Showtime Plans Stephen Colbert Election Special; Renews ‘Homeland’

Showtime is looking to partner with Stephen Colbert to give election night viewers an alternative to news coverage.

The network is in talks to air a live election special hosted by the host from sister CBS’ “The Late Show.”

“Stephen wants to do it, I want to do it, the studio wants to do it,” Showtime president David Nevins told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It will be Colbert unfettered. He’s promised to say a few curse words, which is important. It’s something I’ve been trying to get him to do for a while. I think it will be great.”

The special will be shot on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” set and produced by the “Late Show” staff.

Nevins said the idea for the live election night special came out of the success of Showtime’s political series “The Circus,” which »

Han Solo’s ‘Star Wars’ Anthology Film Casting Young Lando Calrissian — Report

Now that Alden Ehrenreich has officially been cast as Han Solo in the iconic “Star Wars” character’s standalone film, other key characters need to come onboard as well. Chief among these, according to TheWrap, is the young Lando Calrissian — Solo’s friend/traitor/friend again originally played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” Asked for comment, Ehrenreich reportedly responded with a mirthless chuckle (note: not really).

Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah Land Post-‘SNL’ Gigs on Showtime

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

There’s a happy ending to the recent news that long-running “SNL” regulars Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah had been dropped from the cast of the sketch comedy show. Both performers, it was announced today, have been cast as the leads in Showtime comedy pilots.

Killam will star in the “comedy anthology” “Mating,” executive produced by Jason Katims and written and executive produced by Stu Zicherman. Per the Showtime release, the project will be “an annual anthology,” with Killam playing “a recently divorced guy who married young and now finds himself completely unprepared for the brave new, frank and fluid world of dating and hooking up.”

This is not a longtime gig, though, as future seasons of “Mating” will focus on a different protagonist. What sounds more ongoing, though, is “White Famous,” executive produced by Jamie Foxx (who will guest star in the pilot) and “Californication’s” Tom Kapinos. Tim Story will direct the pilot. »

‘David Brent: Life on the Road’ Critical Roundup: Ricky Gervais’ Infamous ‘Office’ Character Has Critics Split

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It’s been more than a decade since audiences became obsessed with Ricky Gervais’ “The Office” character, David Brent. Now, the former paper salesman returns in the new film “David Brent: Life on the Road,” about the worst boss ever’s efforts to go on a self-funded tour with his band Foregone Conclusion, all the while still a traveling salesman. But are critics excited for the return of Gervais’ most iconic character? Here’s what they’re saying.

Variety’s Catherine Bray wrote, “Ricky Gervais’ most enduring creation hits the road for one last attempt at cracking showbiz, in a funny if meandering big-screen adventure.” She adds, “It’s a recipe for humor and conflict which, judging by the home-turf success of other recent theatrical transplants of U.K. sitcoms should have no trouble connecting with the original show’s sizable fanbase.”

Convicted serial killer Lonnie Franklin’s death sentence Wednesday was welcome news to the families of his murder victims looking for closure, but for Nick Broomfield, director of the HBO documentary about Franklin “Tales of the Grim Sleeper,” the story is far from over. Though Franklin has been brought to justice for a series of murders dating back to 1985, the systemic problems that prevented him from being caught for 25 years remain today, according to Broomfield.
