BMJ is a peer-reviewed medical journal. It is one of the world's oldest general medical journals and has been described as among the most prestigious. It was originally called the British Medical Journal. BMJ is offering 50 accounts to active medical editors.

Requirements[edit]

• You do not have free online access to these BMJ products through your local library, university, or alumni programme
• You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
• You have an account that is a minimum of 6 months old
• You have a minimum of 500 edits to the encyclopedia
• You are active in medical content generation, research, and/or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

Expectations[edit]

Approved editors may

• Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
• Electronically save portions of restricted content
• Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
• Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the BMJ website they are accessing

Approved editors will not

• Share their account logins or passwords with others
• Mass scrape or mass download BMJ content
• Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
• Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
• Use the access provided through the Pilot for any commercial purpose

Private and confidential information

• You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. You understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia Library, and BMJ. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or BMJ), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

Citation[edit]

• Editors should always provide original citation information, in addition to linking an BMJ article, per WP:V and WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT
• Editors should not provide bare links to non-free BMJ pages
• Editors should note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate

What to expect with TWL account processing

Make sure to read this before sending emails to account coordinators inquiring about your account status. Our current average account distribution cycle (from sign up to account access), is 27 days. We are working on improving this. Step 1: Application screening We will begin screening applicants within a few weeks of opening applications, usually as the number of applications approaches or exceeds the number of accounts available. At that time the account coordinator will place an {{Approved}} ( Approved), {{Unapproved}} ( Not approved)or {{ToBeDone}} ( Pending or waitlisted) status to your account. If you signed up after the initial call for applicants, process may not happen immediately if accounts are not available. Step 2: Email and Google Form After you have received approval for an account, you will be contacted via a Wikipedia email from the account coordinator; be sure to check your spam folder. The email will contain instructions for filling out a Google form with the required information for access. Step 3: Waiting for partners to activate accounts There are several steps of subsequent processing, including waiting for a batch of users to submit information, emailing partners, and waiting for partners to activate accounts. Expect this process to take as long as two weeks; we try to make it take less time, but there are a lot of variables at play. Step 4: Using access Once the account is activated either the volunteer coordinator or the partner will send you an email with access information. Follow the given instructions, and make sure to actively use your access to improve Wikipedia content! Changes coming soon We recognize this process can be frustrating and take a while: we think so too. We are in the process of developing a digital tool to make this process more user friendly and make it easier for us to give you access to partners. 2. Viswaprabha - I am an editor at various Wikipedias including en but predominantly on Indic Wikis(especially ml.wikipedia.org). By profession, I am an experienced bio-medical engineer specialized in surgery, radiation physics, laboratory sciences, sterilisation and infection control, audiology, speech therapy, electrophysiology, forensic medicine etc. Thank you. 5. Paulscrawl (talk · contribs) - 11 year editor, reviewer. Citation nut. Wikipedia coverage of evidence-based medicine (EBM) looks, in many instances I've reviewed, to be largely contributed by those with skin in this contentious game - at the least, most cites in many such articles are to primary sources, with little in the way of secondary sources to establish notability or offer critique. Peer review publication too often means press release and little more. This bloats article length and citation counts to no good effect. I'm looking to restore these articles to reasonable scale and NPOV (starting with historical overviews of the subfields and citations of secondary sources) and overall readability and usability by the general public. BMJ and their specialized journals in this field are simply unsurpassed resources in EBM and will be put to good use making Wikipedia's coverage truly encyclopedic. Thanks! I've also updated Users’ Guides to the Medical Literature, which could use reviews available on BMJ. 6. Mdscottis (talk · contribs) I have a 'cure award'. General medical and sports medicine topics as they arise in interaction with family medicine residents and athletic trainers and students. Some contribution, some citation verification, improvement and re-writing. Some general flow, syntax, punctuation. Aspro (talk · contribs) When I started in editing in 2006 I had a paid BMJ account for a few years to help find good references for medical articles but being retired I can't afford the annual fee. I came to WP originally, to contribute to mental health articles and the history of psychiatric institutions, so access to the BMJ archive would be invaluable. I spend a lot of time answering general non pacific queries on the Ref Desk.

Kashmiri (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I manage a patient organisation in one of orphan diseases and share a lot of research knowledge here on Wikipedia for the benefit of other patients. As our organisation is involved in research, I have edited numerous medicine-related articles, primarily in the area of neuromuscular disorders, both on en-wiki and (much less) pl-wiki. Unfortunately, we do not have any institutional subscription, and access of BMJ would help me to further update Wikipedia with medicine's new discoveries – properly sourced.     I have over 1000 contribs in 2015, which is not much of course, but I can't check them all to look for medical edits. I can assure you that medicine is the topic I am best at, and I usually use a lot of references (this is recent too). 22. Kevin Gorman (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) - hard to beat the BMJ in terms of quality of sourcing for medical articles. I had septic shock in January which severely interfered with my ability to edit for a significant period of time, and have only recently started editing again. In the past, I've edited a number of articles related to medical topics, as well as verified a significant number of USEP edits and helped out with Dr. Azzam's class at UCSF. In the near future, I intend to return to editing MEDRS topics - Marfan's syndrome needs a ton of work, Congenital_contractural_arachnodactyly needs a TON of work, and the connective tissue disease caused by Mothers_against_decapentaplegic_homolog_3 mutations doesn't have it's own article (and is grouped in with Loeys–Dietz_syndrome as type3, a mistake perpetuated in some medical literature, but not in any of the papers directly dealing with SMAD3 mutants.)
