The Best-Selling Games of 2010, So Far

NPD data published by Nintendo reveals the 30 best-selling games for the first three months of the year.

NPD Data

Following up last week's deluge of financial information from the company, Nintendo has released a breakdown of the top-selling console and handheld games of the year so far. At the top of the list: Nintendo games, of course.

The report, spotted by GameIndustry.biz, catalogs sales estimates from January 2010 through the end of March, sourcing the NPD group for the U.S. numbers and GfK International for the European figures. Both sets of data list the 30 best-selling games for their respective regions.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii led the U.S. charts, with fellow Nintendo juggernaut Pokemon Soul Silver nabbing the runner-up position. God of War 3 had the number three spot, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360, Wii Sports Resort, and the Balance Board bundle of Wii Fit Plus.

The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII managed to crack the top 10 at number seven, while EA-published sequels Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360) and Mass Effect 2 took eighth and ninth place, respectively. Lastly, Pokemon Heart Gold secured the number 10 slot in the States.

GfK International Data

As for Europe, the game that moved the most copies across the pond was Wii Fit Plus, followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Just Dance, Final Fantasy XIII on PS3, and Pokemon Soul Silver. Other big sellers included Mario Kart Wii at the seventh position and Heavy Rain at number 10.

You can check out the presentation in its entirety at Nintendo's investor relations site.

Well, for one if you're a "hardcore" gamer you'll have all 3 systems AND a PC.  A hardcore gamer that is depriving themselves of the next Mario, Metroid, or Zelda game is one that I personally wouldn't call hardcore.  I believe a hardcore gamer to be a "jack of all games" of sorts, with a certain level of knowledge and expertise for EVERY genre and system old and new.  Myself, I picked up 3D dot game heroes, super street fighter 4, and of course Final Fantasy 13 for ps3.  My xbox is on all the time with Netflix for my wife, and Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 that her son and I play (getting REAL sick of gun games, he's 8 and won't play anything else), my PC is a slave for Blizzard games and my emulators, and last for that Wii everyone hates on, I'm really enjoying Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, and looking forward to the next Metroid.

Basically go to the system with the most games you know YOU will enjoy if you can only afford one.  Then get a job, mow lawns, walk dogs, whatever.  Just get more.

I like the fact that we have such a large playground to choose from. We are in a place where if you don't like one platform. There is another one for you. I have a Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, PC and a DS. Gone is the day of the Colleco Vision or the Atari. (although I still wish my dad didnt sell them at a garage sale!!) That there is the opportunity to please such a large market, from kids, to granparents. Right on!! That is the revolution, and it makes me feel better about all the hours and money I have spent on Gaming over the years!!

..but really, why do people need to call the Wii a piece of <expletive>? It may be true that the Wii isn't really in the same category as the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, this is simply because the systems are aimed at different audiences.

Like FPSs and big, online multiplayer fun? Play Xbox 360.

Like really good single player ventures? Play PS3.

Like to play with people in the same room as you? Play Wii.

And another thing. Here are the reasons the Wii is looked at in a bad light:

-Third party companies that nobody's ever heard of want to make a quick buck so they make crappy minigame collections aimed at little kids and games of the like.

-Nintendo tries to innovate with some of the new features for the Wii, while conservative gamers (what appears to be 75% of the gaming population) frown upon it.

-Nintendo is the main publisher that makes decent games (Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Party 8, New Super Mario Bros. Wii) along with two or three others that make games closer to that standard than the rest (Sega, etc.)

-My only true complaint: Graphics and DVD support, which has been in place since the PS2 days at the earliest of my remembering.

So you can't really say the Wii sucks just because you don't like platforming games or something like that.

Because in the end, that's just like saying you hate a country because their president is ugly.

I'm sorry that you're obviously butthurt about Nintendo's success, but seriously man... when you say stuff like that, you sound like a little kid.

It's kind actually of ironic.... you know, all of these people who seem to claim that Nintendo is a "waggle-machine for kids"... most of the people saying stuff like that are either 15 years old or younger OR are so insecure about their own level of maturity that they have to go out of their way to seem like a hardcore, Wii-hatin' tough guy!

yeah, I think you nailed it, It has to do with complexity, therefore, skilled players, therefore, talent...

I know a lot of people that no matter how hard they try to learn how to play a fighting game, they simply can´t, therefore, comes frustration, therefore, casual gamer... I said on a blog earlier, no matter how much games you played or doesn´t matter how much games do you own, If you don´t have a refined taste on video games, nor the skills to really play them, you are just a poseur or a casual gamer... or a mindless freaky collector...

Exactly. Being a real Hardcore gamer just isn't healthy. I've paid my dues, and smashed some controlers in my past as well. But I've got friggin' bills to pay and stuff to do. I'm lucky if I can squeeze out 3 straight hours to play a game now-a-days.

So it seems that the new hardcore title is for gamers who play more complex video games that a casual gamer might have a certain dislike for. And that's fine with me.

yeah, but we all have to grow up at some point, right?, I mean I love videogames and I´ve smashed and blown to pieces a couple of controllers on the floor and I yell at my TV on a regular basis, but when you have a job, a girlfriend, a wife , kids, you can´t ¨squeeze¨ those games as you did, you just have no time to do it, If you still do it (I´m not referring to you), and you don´t have a job, a girlfriend, other interests, a kid (older gamers), and all you do is play videogames, you are just a retard or a very sick individual.

for me hardcore is synonymous of good taste, and you can´t buy good taste, in other words, you born a hardcore gamer or you don´t, simple as that!

Has nothing to do with using cheat codes, being a whiny 12 year old (Why is 12 the standard age every one uses?), or only playing FPS. At least it didn't used to. Hardcore was a title for gamers who squeezed out every last drop a game had to offer no matter what genre it was. They played and defeated games who's difficulty were plain unrealistic or cheap. They had knowledge of/owned extremely obscure or import games that most gamers didn't care about.

Those guys who bought import consoles before they were released in their respective countries were hardcore gamers. In short, real harcore gaming was an addiction to video games that literally sucked the life out of you. If you've never broken controllers over stuff that happend in games before, then you've never been a hardcore gamer. (Mostly Snes to PSone days, before controllers ran $40+)

Never said being a hardcore gamer was healthy. And my experiences were on the console side of the spectrum. PC Hardcore gamers have actually DIED playing games.

Is probably one of those slightly immature and elitist gamers, that have no problem using cheat codes and short cuts and thus NOT as hard core as they claim to be.

Not to say that hardcore gamers don't hate the Wii, but let's be honest the "hardcore " title is being given to 12 year olds that only know how to play FPS or Madden.

yeah ah guy you need to chill a bit and read what icon wrote down a little closer. since he said gran turismo 5 not gta5, he really isnt pulling stuff out of his ass now is he. oh and he does have a point, besides the three big games that come out for the nintendo systems, there isnt any real appeal to people who play games long term. the wii has become a short term game system where its fun and interesting at first but gets old fast, just like most fads

Icon's got a point. Nearly every game in this list is a first party one. Nothing wrong with that, but it does show the Wii's biggest weakness, it's third party support. Although they've got no shortage of it by no means. The DS itself has mountains of it. The quality of a lot of those third party games are just apalling though.

...are YOU going to see any of the profits from all these games?(I'm sure this is the part where you claim to be a Sony share-holder...pile another lie on your mountain of obviously facetious claims. Why not?)The fact that you can encyclopedically (even though for the record many of the games you mentioned don't have a release date yet.GTA5?Way to just pull stuff out of your ass.)list off like a dozen games just, once again, shows what an irreparable nerd you are.PS3/XBOX had good line-ups last year too...so?The way you personally identify with a Corporation is more than a little pathetic.
