Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Paterson’ Gets Awards-Friendly Release Date From Amazon And Bleecker Street

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jim Jarmusch’s Cannes premiere “Paterson” will hit the big screen just in time for this year’s awards season, thanks to Amazon and Bleecker Street. Variety reports that the Adam Driver-starring film will get a platform release at the end of the year, debuting on December 28 — just in time to make the awards-qualifying cut-off — and will expand its theatrical release in subsequent weeks.

The film, about a New Jersey bus driver going about his daily routine, was hailed at Cannes, where it premiered in May. Our own Eric Kohn wrote in his Cannes review that it’s Jarmusch’s most personal film yet, good enough for the film to earn an A rating.

Mike Birbiglia on ‘Don’t Think Twice,’ Envy, And Why Improv is Nicer Than Stand-Up

20 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Mike Birbiglia is pulling back the curtain on the feuds and resentments that consume comedians when one of their own hits it big.

In his second feature, “Don’t Think Twice,” Birbiglia depicts a tight-knit improv troop that starts to unravel when one of its members gets cast on a popular “Saturday Night Live”-type program. It’s an opportunity for the stand-up comic to explore the nature of success, the fear of failure, and the way that people in their thirties began to grapple with the realization that they may not make it after all.

Birbiglia not only directs, he co-wrote the film, produced it, and stars alongside Keegan-Michael Key and Gillian Armstrong. Best known for his stand-up comedy and one-man shows, he previously directed 2012’s “Sleepwalk With Me,” an autobiographical look at his sleepwalking disorder. “Don’t Think Twice” opened in a single New York theater last weekend »

One of the joys of Netflix’s original series “Stranger Things” is the season’s sense of finality. The Duffer brothers excelled at crescendoing the season with action, emotion and heft, yet they left what they’ve referred to as “dangling threads” around the conclusions of Will Byers and Eleven, and we wanted to get in on speculating what Season 2 may answer and where the show could venture to. If you’ve finished the season, read on to find out what we’re asking about Season 2. If you haven’t checked out Season 1 yet, Do That and stop reading here!

Comic-Con 2016: the good, the bad and the unbearable

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Comic-Con is merely the first taste of everything you won’t be able to shut up about for the next year or two, from Wonder Woman to Rihanna in Bates Motel

Comic-Con 2016 is over, but in my mind, it’s still going on. It’s been a full day since I left San Diego and the moist throng of sweaty pop culture enthusiasts, but I’m still unpacking all of the merchandise I bought (and the merchandise given to me by studios eager to hawk their latest big-budget gambles), washing the party stench out of my clothes, and breathlessly pondering casting announcements, flashy trailers and plot reveals. When you spend large portions of your everyday life following the progress of an in-production motion picture or TV show or comic book series, you’re essentially living Comic-Con year-round. For the truly dedicated fan in 2016, Comic-Con never ends.

‘The Flash’: ‘Dope’ Actress Kiersey Clemons to Star as Iris West in Movie (Exclusive)

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kiersey Clemons has closed a deal to star opposite Ezra Miller in “The Flash” movie.

Variety first reported earlier this month that she was the top choice for the female lead in the Warner Bros. film.

Insiders reveal that Clemons is likely to play Iris West, the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen, the Flash’s alter ego.

The Flash” had to overcome the hurdle of replacing the film’s original director, Seth Grahame-Smith, who parted ways with the project over creative differences. “Dope” helmer Rick Famuyiwa took over directing duties in June. The movie, however, appears to be able to meet its planned start date. Production is expected to commence sometime this year.

The studio is keeping Smith’s most recent draft of the script, which is based on a treatment by Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Clemons’ star has risen significantly since her breakout performance in “Dope. »

‘Pitch Perfect’ Director Jason Moore to Helm Fox’s ‘Hair Wars’ Movie

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox 2000 has tapped “Pitch Perfect” director Jason Moore to helm “Hair Wars,” based on a pitch from “Fresh Off the Boat” creator and showrunner Nahnatchka Khan.

Fox 2000 won a bidding war for the project, which will be written by Khan and is based on a competition in which hair salons compete through song and dance numbers.

Moore made his directorial debut with “Pitch Perfect,” which starred Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson and grossed $115 million worldwide. That success has led to a pair of sequels.

Moore also directed last year’s “Sisters,” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. That comedy grossed $87 million domestically and $105 million worldwide.

Khan’s “Fresh Off the Boat” has been renewed for a third season by ABC. It centers on a Taiwanese family living in the U.S. in the ’90s and stars Randall Park and Constance Wu.

Khan also created comedy “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23. »
