‘Game of Thrones’ Battle of the Bastards Was Fought with a Rubber Sword

13 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

With nearly 100,000 votes from fans, last week’s episode of “Game of Thrones” maintains a perfect 10/10 rating on IMDb. As such, director Miguel Sapochnik’s staging of the genuinely epic conflict over Winterfell, the Starks’ ancestral home, has already entered the conversation as being perhaps the HBO drama’s greatest hour yet. Not every single aspect of “Battle of the Bastards” holds up to closer scrutiny, however — namely a quick shot of Jon Snow’s sword.

Longclaw, as the blade is known, is made of Valyrian steel — the strongest, most precious material in all of Westeros. Since that doesn’t actually exist, certain concessions had to be made in the name of both safety and reality. My experience with swords is limited, but I’m pretty sure they don’t usually flop around like rubber. »

Even ‘Late Night’ Host Seth Meyers Was Surprised By Donald Trump’s Political Ascendancy

20 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Seth Meyers knows a thing or two about American politics – at least, he sure knows how to write about them in a way that’s both deeply funny and very informative – but even the “Late Night” host was surprised by the year-long political ascendency of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“I’ve been wrong at every turn about how I thought this would all go down. I was right about [how] it would be Hillary, and then wrong about everything else,” Meyers recently told IndieWire, when asked if he could have possibly foreseen the wild way this year’s presidential election would shake out.

For the late night talk show host (and former “Saturday Night Live” head writer and “Weekend Update” anchor, another venue in which he often trafficked in political humor), the first moments of Trump’s campaign seemed like prime fodder for a joke or two, especially his »

Screenwriters Colony Opens Farmhouse Door to TV Comedy Writers at Nantucket Fest

21 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Nantucket, Mass. — It’s safe to say that Matt Hobby, Wyndham Lewis, Kevin Seccia and Rose Surnow will probably never work in a writers room quite like the one where they just spent two weeks honing their craft.

This month, the foursome spent a fortnight living and working in a farmhouse in a remote spot on Nantucket island, as the participants in the Screenwriters Colony’s inaugural episodic comedy residency program. The group mostly detached from the rest of the world while working intensively with veteran comedy showrunner Eric Gilliland (“Roseanne,” “That ’70s Show”) on four scripts that were showcased with a staged reading at the Nantucket Film Festival.

Following the template of the Screenwriters Colony’s annual feature film residency, the writers came to Nantucket with the first draft of a script in hand. From June 10-23, they took part in a series of workshops on their scripts, seminars and jawboning sessions with other advisors including »

In Season 3, ‘Silicon Valley’ Finds its Heart and its Groove

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” Zach Woods plays Jared, a drone at a tech megacorporation who leaves his job to be the CFO for his friend’s startup — a little company named, ridiculously, Pied Piper. Jared’s real name is Donald, but when his former boss Gavin Belson (Matt Ross), a power-obsessed narcissist, calls him by the wrong name at work, the new name sticks with his mostly mean-spirited coworkers. The indignity of it doesn’t quite get Jared down, though there is a pained exchange late in season two when it appears that another Jared may join the company. Instead of reverting to his original name, his coworkers declare that he will be named “Other Jared,” or “O.J.” for short. “You should be flattered,” says Gilfoyle (Martin Starr). “O.J. Simpson is one of the most recognizable people on the face of the planet.”

Review: ‘Veep’ Season 5 Finale Forges a Brave New Future

Last Week’S Review: Review: ‘Veep’ Debuts Catherine’s Documentary, Shocks the World

Immediate Reaction

“Maybe it will ruin her parade.” With those words, we saw the first glimpse of happiness cross Selina Meyer’s face all episode. In someone else’s pain and disappointment, she found pleasure. She came close to a similar reaction when Tom James shockingly lost the presidency, but her own misfortune was tied to his, thus ruining any pure happiness the exiting President could cling to in her poorest hour.

The reason I bring this up is primarily to highlight what “Inauguration” focused on throughout: Selina Meyer through the impossibly clear lens of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Granted, it’s not a stretch to define the series similarly, but the Season 5 finale took another in what have become a series of brave steps by refusing to put Selina back in the VP office. And to justify that choice, »

Jesse Williams, who’s starred on “Grey’s Anatomy” since Season 6, was honored with the Humanitarian Award at this evening at the Bet Awards — and took the opportunity to speak boldly. In the space of just a few minutes, Williams speaks passionately about the recent police brutality targeted at black people, invoking Sandra Bland, Eric Garner and many other names we cannot forget. “The hereafter is a hustle,” he says to suggestions that black people need to wait for their chance at equality. “We want it now.”
