Martin Scorsese talks about the making of The King of Comedy with Vanity Fair‘s Simon Abrams:

I didn’t really understand where I stood in relationship to the film, the story, Rupert Pupkin, and Jerry Langford, too, until I was in the process of making the film—the shooting, the editing. I don’t think I necessarily liked what I found. What I mean is: I saw myself in Rupert, on the surface, as somebody that came from that appreciation of early television of the 50s—particularly New York variety comedy shows. Steve Allen, Jack Paar. Because film is a visual medium, color plays an important role in characterization, setting, and psychology that goes just a little bit deeper than “Red Mean Rage!” A color palette is a subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) way to epitomize tone and feeling via mise-en-scène. A new video essay by Lily Mtz-Seara travels through the color wheel over some Vivaldi and uses an array of films to make its case about why color in production design and lighting should not be overlooked.

From Spring Breakers to American Beauty, Skyfall to The Darjeeling Limited, the essay showcases the clever and sometimes overlapping nature of each with regards to color palettes. Red, for instance, is both a sign of violence in The Shining, but it is both violence and passion in Only God Forgives.

After Alexandre Aja directed Max Minghella in Horns a few years back, they two are collaborating again. The director is helming Minghella’s first feature screenplay with The 9th Life of Louis Drax, which is based on Liz Jensen‘s book. Led by  Jamie Dornan, Sarah Gadon, Aaron Paul, Oliver Platt, Molly Parker, Barbara Hershey, and Aiden Longworth, the first trailer has now landed.

A mix of psychological thriller and fantasy, there’s some interesting imagery in the film, even if it looks like Aja is working with a lower budget this time around. Shot back in 2014, the film will finally arrive this fall and hopefully the delay didn’t have to do with its quality, but we’ll find out shortly. Check out the trailer below.

Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho made his narrative directorial debut with 2012’s Neighboring Sounds, which arrived with wide critical acclaim. This year at Cannes he debuted his follow-up, Aquarius, which follows a musician and widow who vows to stay in an apartment complex largely bought out by a company with plans for the location. This leads to conflict and revelation regarding family, her past, and her future. Netflix picked up the film, presumably for a U.S. premiere later this year.

It was one of our favorites of Cannes, and we said in our review, “The staggeringly accomplished debut feature by Brazilian critic-turned-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, Neighboring Sounds, announced the arrival of a remarkable new talent in international cinema. We’ve heard it before: an accomplished actor making the transition to directing his first movie — along with starring and producing in it. While it seems to work as much as it fails, hopefully, Michael Sheen falls into the former category, as he is set for his directorial debut with Green River Killer, a true story about Gary Ridgway, who, in 2003, pled guilty to the murder of 48 women between the ’80s and ’90s. Sheen will also star as Ridgway, in a script penned by Sheen himself. It will be an adaptation of the Eisner award-winning Dark Horse graphic novel, Green River Killer: A True Detective Story.

The story is dark, but one that, “ultimately finds hope and meaning in that darkness,” Sheen states to Variety. “The story of Tom and Gary, and how they are bound together in time, pulled me in from the beginning and wouldn’t let go. »

Once a movie studio has covered “this movie is a blast” with the Beastie Boys and “this is toweringly epic” with a more orchestral tinge, the final step is naturally “this is earth-shatteringly emotional, but with style” by using Rihanna. That’s the steps taken by the team behind Star Trek Beyond with the final trailer for the sci-fi adventure, featuring the new song “Sledgehammer.”

Following the tragic loss of co-star Anton Yelchin, he doesn’t show up here, but the final trailer carries a more somber tone. It features Chris Pine’s Kirk questioning his enrollment in Star Fleet (and really, the meaning of existence, with the help of some classic on-the-nose dialogue from Karl Urban), Idris Elba‘s Krall in action, and of course, things exploding.

After Silicon Valley had one of its best seasons yet, you may be looking for some more Thomas Middleditch this summer — and you are in luck. He leads Joshy, which finds him recovering after his fiancée (Alison Brie) commits suicide on his birthday. Four months later, he can’t get the deposit back on the house in Ojai, California he rented for his bachelor party, so he decides to make the best of it and invite his closest friends to spend a weekend together.

Featuring the stacked ensemble of Adam Pally, Nick Kroll, Jenny Slate, Brett Gelman, Alex Ross Perry, Joe Swanberg, Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, Lauren Graham, and Jake Johnson, the first trailer has landed today. Coming from Jeff Baena, it does a strong job of selling the mix of comedy and drama.

Exploring artificial intelligence is no new thing in the world of science-fiction movies, but last year’s Ex Machina, which won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, helped sell a more believable scenario than perhaps ever before. While Alex Garland is off shooting his follow-up, Annihilation, this fall will bring another similarly-themed feature with Morgan.

Backed by Ridley Scott, his son Luke Scott has made his feature directorial debut with the project and today the full-length trailer has arrived. Starring Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy (who is fantastic in this year’s hit The Witch), Paul Giamatti, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Yeoh, Toby Jones, and Boyd Holbrook, the 20th Century Fox project follows a corporate risk-management consultant who is summoned to a remote research lab to determine whether or not to terminate an at-risk artificial being.

In just a few weeks, Terrence Malick will begin production on his new World War II drama Radegund — but it won’t be the last time we hear about the director this year. Along with recently finishing work on his Austin-set drama Weightless — which won’t get a theatrical release until 2017, but may show up at a film festival in the fall — his long-gestating documentary Voyage of Time will arrive in just a few months.

Earlier this summer, IMAX let slip that they’ll give the film a release on October 7, and now they’ve updated their official site with a new synopsis and confirmed a runtime, along with the release date. This version (“The IMAX Experience”) clocks in at 40 minutes with narration from Brad Pitt; there’s no word yet from Broad Green if the expanded, Cate Blanchett-narrated, 90-minute companion feature will arrive around the same time, but »
