George R.R. Martin: Why He Thinks That ‘‘Outlander’ Was Robbed’ During Emmy Nominations

23 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

George R.R. Martin has some thoughts on the recent Emmy nominations. While he’s super thrilled with the news of “Game of Thrones” topping the list with 23 noms, he thinks some contenders got snubbed, especially one certain Starz series.

“‘Outlander was robbed,” the author wrote to a fan on his LiveJournal comments section. “All three leads were amazing … especially Tobias Menzies in his double role as Frank and Black Jack.” The drama receive two nomination for costume and production design.

Eva Green also deserved a nomination for her work in ‘Penny Dreadful,’” he added. “Of course, every year has omissions. And right now it is harder than it has ever been. So many great, great shows to watch.”

‘Star Wars Rebels’: 10 Things To Expect From Season 3, Straight From Star Wars Celebration

16 July 2016 11:37 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Saturday afternoon at Star Wars Celebration was rebel territory, thanks to an information-packed panel all about “Star Wars Rebels” Season 3, along with the exclusive premiere of the first two new episodes from the animated series. Co-creator Dave Filoni hit the Celebration stage in London alongside “Rebels” stars Tiya Sircar (who voices Sabine) and Sam Witwer (who voices Darth Maul and the Emperor on the show) to talk about what fans can expect to see from the newest season.

In short, it’s a lot. From the introduction of new characters (and maybe a few not-so-new characters) to some major developments from old favorites, along with the kind of reveal that made a grown man sitting in front of me stand up and cheer “Yesss!!!,” Season 3 does not appear to be holding back (even if Filoni had to, just a little bit).

The Upside Down: 8 questions about 'Stranger Things' season 1

6 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

On Friday, Netflix debuted the eight-episode first season of Stranger Things, an unapologetic ode to Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter, and all the other horror and suspense tropes of the early '80s that the Duffer Brothers love. I reviewed it last week, and I'm assuming some of you watched it all over the weekend, which means it's time to talk about the show — with full spoilers for the whole season — coming up just as soon as I steal some Eggos from the supermarket... Rather than do an episode-by-episode breakdown of something that's very much just one long story — and one that, as I said in the earlier review, avoids the usual Netflix pacing problems by only running eight hours — I thought I'd pick eight of the topics and moments from the season that struck me, starting with »

An Alternative Perspective On Casting Workshops: Open Letter

49 minutes ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Ajarae Coleman is an actress and founder of TheWorkshopGuru.com, a listing and review service for casting director and talent agent/manager workshops.  Fueled by recent media attention, opposition to casting director (CD) workshops is stronger than ever. It is an awkward time for actors like me who value workshops. We are being portrayed, contradictorily, as either: 1) poor, struggling, unwitting fools who are naively allowing themselves to be taken advantage of by these… »

Danny McBride Talks HBO’s ‘Vice Principals,’ Bill Murray, and Telling a Complete Story

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

HBO’s new comedy series “Vice Principals” is a strange beast. Created by the “Eastbound and Down” team of director Jody Hill and star Danny McBride, the 18-episode series explores the uncomfortable alliance between two rival vice principals (McBride and “Justified” veteran Walton Goggins) as they team up to take down the school’s new principal (Kimberly Hebert Gregory).

The cabler launches the first batch of nine episodes on July 17, following the second season premiere of Dwayne Johnson’s “Ballers,” and we’ll presumably see the next nine in 2017. And then that’s it. End of story. It’s a model more common to limited series, or certain British shows (“The Office” comes to mind), and all but unheard of in U.S. television.

Variety spoke with McBride about the unusual format of the show, his standout co-stars (including a Bill Murray cameo in the premiere episode), and making his directorial debut.
